Chapter 23
The Fragile Edge of Warmth
The morning air carries a sharp, unfamiliar chill that nips at Tessa's skin that day.
After finishing breakfast, she finds herself sitting completely alone on a cold stone bench in the centre of the mansion’s massive garden.
Her headphones rest over her ears, delivering a soft, melancholy melody, but the words slip away before they can mean anything to her.
Her own thoughts are simply too loud for the music to reach her properly.
The lyrics drift in and out of her mind like distant echoes while she stares blankly at the sprawling, manicured lawns stretching out in front of her.
Ever since coming to this mansion, everything in Tessa's life has changed far too quickly.
Just a turn of the calendar ago, her existence was small, quiet, and entirely her own.
Her tiny dress-designing boutique had been enough to fill her entire day with comforting chaos.
Fabrics, sketches, measurements, impatient customers, and late-night stitching sessions—those things used to be her normal.
She used to fall asleep counting stitches and wake up chasing colours.
Now, she is sitting inside a sprawling mansion that is guarded heavily like a fortress.
Everywhere she looks, danger wears a polished uniform.
Even the guards posted near the gates move with a lethal precision.
Near the grand entrance, a fleet of black luxury cars sit under the morning sun, their pristine paint reflecting light so harshly it makes her eyes ache.
Everything around her looks expensive, polished, and painfully perfect.
The marble pathways beneath her shoes, the flawless hedges, the silent fountains, the enormous glass windows—every single detail screams absolute power.
Yet, beneath that flawless veneer of wealth, a heavy, suffocating dread still poisons the air. It is a silent, patient kind of fear. The sort that conceals itself behind expensive, tailor-made suits, controlled voices, and polite nods.
Tessa tries to lean back slightly against the stone bench, forcing her tense shoulders to drop in an attempt to relax, when a sudden shift near the grand entrance catches her eye.
A group of men enter the mansion grounds, clad in dark, heavy clothing.
Dark ink crawls up the necks and hands of some, the heavy tattoos disappearing beneath their sleeves like shadows.
Others carry themselves with the distinct, terrifying ease that only comes from an intimate acquaintance with violence.
Even the way they walk feels inherently dangerous.
Like they have grown up surrounded by blood and chaos.
She stares at them quietly for a few long seconds before turning toward the young maid who stands a few paces behind her bench. “Who are they?” Tessa asks, keeping her voice low, barely a whisper.
The girl’s posture stiffens almost immediately.
Anxiety flickers across her face, and she nervously straightens down her apron.
“I’m not completely certain, miss,” she admits carefully, keeping her gaze fixed on the gravel path.
“I only started working here recently.” She hesitates for a brief second, glancing toward the main house before adding, “Actually… I was hiring d the day after you arrived.”
A slight frown creases Tessa's brow. “Why?”
The maid lowers her voice even further. “Mr. Blackwood gave explicit orders. He didn’t want male staff or any unnecessary bodyguards near this wing. He thought you might feel uncomfortable.”
The words hang in the crisp morning air between them.
For a long moment, Tessa doesn’t say anything.
Because the truth is… Lucius was right. She has always despised the uninvited presence of unfamiliar men standing too close to her.
Sudden touches make her body stiffen automatically, locking her muscles in fear.
Even crowded places sometimes make her anxious without any clear reason.
Noticing her long silence, a soft, sympathetic smile touches the maid's lips. “You’re very lucky, miss. Gentlemen like him are rare these days.”
Gentleman.
The word strikes a raw nerve, sending a sickening jolt straight to Tessa's chest.
It hits her harder than it should have. Suddenly, the garden vanishes, replaced by an old memory so vivid it almost hurts to breathe.
Her mother used to use that exact word to describe her father.
When Tessa was a little girl, her mother often stroked her hair and said she looked exactly like him.
She claimed Tessa's eyes, her skin tone, and even her fleeting expressions belonged to him.
People around them used to echo those words all the time.
And maybe that is the precise reason Tessa sometimes hates looking at her own reflection in the mirror.
Because she hates him with every broken piece of her heart.
She hated the cruel, dismissive way he treated her mother.
She hated how effortlessly he abandoned them, leaving his family behind like they meant absolutely nothing.
She hated the memory of her mother crying alone into her pillow in the dead of night, only to force a bright, fragile smile onto her face every morning before sending Tessa to school.
After her mother died, those painful memories didn't fade.
They became even heavier, turning to stone and burying themselves deep inside her chest.
Tessa lowers her head quietly, her fingers tightening around her phone as she tries to force the ghosts back into the dark.
A sudden, light pressure settles on her shoulder.
Her body flinches violently before her brain can even process the touch.
She spins around quickly, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Lucius stands there.
His face is an unreadable mask of absolute, chilling calm.
Victor and Alex are standing just a few paces behind him.
But it isn't the men who make her freeze.
Standing right next to them are two women Tessa has never seen before in her life.
For several agonizing seconds, she can only stare blankly.
Victor maintains his usual, effortlessly lazy posture with a relaxed expression, while Alex carries that confident, immovable presence that makes it seem like nothing in the world can ever surprise him.
But her attention shifts entirely toward the two strangers beside them.
One of them possesses long, midnight-black hair, a soft smile, and bright, playful eyes.
She stands close to Victor, comfortably leaning toward his side like she belongs there naturally.
The other woman has short, rich brown hair, elegant glasses, and a quiet, understated beauty that feels impossible to ignore.
She stands beside Alex with calm confidence written all over her face.
The pieces fall into place in Tessa's mind almost immediately. Victor’s girlfriend. Alex’s wife.
Tessa stands up awkwardly from the bench, her movements feeling clumsy under the sudden weight of their attention. She introduces herself softly, her voice trembling slightly.
The dark-haired woman beside Victor is the first to offer a brilliant smile. “Emily,” she says, her tone instantly breaking the frost in the air.
The other extends her hand with a gentle, deliberate grace. “Olivia.”
Tessa braces herself, waiting for the cold sting of appraisal.
She expected a heavy gaze of judgment, a subtle hint of superiority, or the masked mockery that usually came from people of their stature.
After all, compared to the titans living in this grand mansion, she was practically nobody.
She came from a tiny shop, an ordinary life, and a background that felt painfully insignificant next to their world of infinite wealth and absolute authority.
But Emily and Olivia treat her like they have known her for years.
Olivia holds her hand softly, her touch warm and incredibly reassuring.
Without a second thought, Emily sits down on the bench right beside her and starts asking questions about her work, with a genuine, unforced excitement shining in her eyes.
“What kind of dresses do you design?”
“What fabrics do you like working with most?”
“Do you prefer dark, dramatic colours or softer tones?”
Tessa answers hesitantly at first, keeping her guard up.
She fully expected their interest to be a fleeting act of courtesy—the kind of polite small talk that disappears after a few seconds.
But it doesn’t. Emily becomes even more excited the more Tessa speaks of threads and tailoring.
Olivia listens carefully too, asking thoughtful, highly specific questions about stitching details, cuts, and unique colour combinations.
For the first time in a very long while, someone seems genuinely interested in her work. It wasn’t born out of pity. It wasn't a rehearsed performance of politeness. They are actually interested. And strangely enough… it makes Tessa happy. Real, unadulterated happiness.
Before she can even process the feeling, Emily suddenly grabs her hands and pulls her to her feet with dramatic flair. Tessa blinks in utter confusion. “What happened?”
“We have a monumentally important mission,” Emily announces excitedly, her voice filled with mock gravity as if it were the most critical task in the world. “We need to choose your birthday party dress right this second.”
Tessa stares at her for a second, completely disarmed by her intensity, until an unexpected laugh escapes past her lips. An actual laugh. Not forced to ease the tension. Not a fake smile donned like a shield. Just real, honest amusement.
Emily looks victorious immediately, while Olivia smiles knowingly beside her. Without giving Tessa a chance to protest, the two of them practically drag her away from the gardens and inside the mansion.
As they walk toward the grand entrance, a sudden impulse makes Tessa glance back over her shoulder once.
Lucius is still standing in the garden, exactly where she has left him.
He is watching her. His expression remains calm as always, but there is an undeniable shift in his dark gaze this time.
Something quieter has settled there. Something softer. Warmer.
The exact moment their eyes meet, Tessa's heartbeat stumbles slightly, skipping a beat in her chest. She looks away quickly, heat rushing to her cheeks, and follows the girls inside.
An hour later, her room looks like a beautiful, chaotic explosion of luxury fabrics and expensive fashion brands.
Gowns cover the entire bed in every possible colour imaginable.
Black satin that catches the light like liquid shadow.
Deep emerald silk. Champagne gold. Dark red velvet.
Silver shimmer that looks like stardust.
Tessa has never seen so many expensive dresses gathered together in her entire life.
Emily is fully invested now. She keeps picking up different gowns and holding the cascading fabrics against Tessa's frame with grand, theatrical gestures, while Olivia observes everything with quiet, sharp precision.
“That one makes her look far too serious,” Emily argues, tossing a gown aside.
“No, the emerald suits her eyes much better,” Olivia counters, stepping closer to evaluate.
“She needs something elegant but dangerous.”
“Exactly.”
They continue discussing styles while Tessa sits on the edge of the chair, watching the entire spectacle unfold with a growing sense of quiet amusement.
Emily keeps making exaggerated, tragic expressions every time Tessa drops her head at a dress, while Olivia calmly adjusts accessories beside her.
The room slowly fills with the ringing notes of shared laughter, the faint scent of expensive perfume, teasing conversations, and profound warmth Tessa hasn’t felt in years.
And somewhere between all those dresses and conversations, a tight knot inside her chest slowly loosens.
For a few golden hours, the world outside this room ceases to exist.
She forgets about her demolished house. She forgets the crushing weight of her loneliness.
She forgets the constant, looming fear that naturally follows Lucius’s dark world.
She even forgets the painful, haunting memories waiting quietly inside her head.
Instead, Tessa laughs. Genuinely. The sound of her own amusement surprises even her. Because she truly cannot remember the last time she has laughed without forcing the emotion to the surface.
As Emily is still arguing dramatically about the necessity of high heels, and Olivia calmly fixes a delicate necklace against one of the velvet dresses, a terrifyingly simple realization washes over Tessa.
This environment no longer feels entirely unfamiliar.
This massive, intimidating mansion. These fierce, protective people. This strange, chaotic warmth.
It is starting to feel real. Like somehow, without even consciously noticing it, she has slowly stepped into a place where people actually see her for who she was.
And for the first time in a very long while, Tessa finds herself wondering if maybe… just maybe… she isn’t completely alone anymore.
