Chapter 24

The Architecture of Deception

* * *

Three days crawl past, leaving a mere five before Ralph’s birthday gala.

The entire city practically revolves around this impending celebration, drawing in powerful executives, politicians, investors, and high-ranking underworld figures.

Ralph is no ordinary wealthy aristocrat throwing an expensive party; he operates as a master strategist who cleans billions of dollars in illicit revenue through legitimate systems without leaving a trace.

This unique capability explains the alliance with him.

Friendship never enters the equation; it remains pure, calculated business.

Lucius stands on the elevated balcony outside his private quarters, exhaling the final drag of a cigarette while the cold night air settles over the estate.

Below him, the vast grounds remain silent, save for the rhythmic, soft splash of water from the garden fountain.

The city lights glow faintly against the horizon, but his thoughts drift far from corporate strategy tonight. His mind anchors entirely on Tessa.

Over the last few days, she grows noticeably quieter.

Emily and Olivia try their best to make her feel included, but the terror lingering inside her refuses to vanish.

Lucius notices the signs every time she believes herself unobserved.

A sudden hesitation catches her movements, a subtle tension locks her shoulders around unfamiliar sounds, and a profound sorrow hides deep within her grey eyes.

Emily mentions earlier this afternoon that Tessa finally selected a gown for Ralph’s event. Under ordinary circumstances, Lucius ignores such trivialities. Yet, somehow, he cares now. The most predatory men in the territory plan to attend that gathering, and Tessa remain devastatingly fragile.

He drops the cigarette over the stone railing, watching the ember die in the darkness just as his phone vibrates in his pocket. Teajun is calling.

The moment Lucius answers, the man's calm voice cuts through the line. “Did you decide what to gift Ralph yet?”

Lucius leans back against the iron railing, his reply dry. “A gold jacket. Or perhaps a luxury vehicle.”

Victor’s loud laughter immediately interrupts from the background. “Bullshit. That old bastard only experiences joy while counting physical currency.”

Alex’s voice joins the line right after. “Technically, he launders your wealth too.”

A slow smirk pulls at Lucius’s lips at the reminder of why the man is so useful.

Teajun softly suggests, “Send limited-edition wine. Wealthy men see a rare vintage and suddenly become sentimental.”

The suggestion prompts a dramatic groan from Victor. “Damn, doctor. That sounds incredibly biased against the upper class.”

“Will you two shut the fuck up?” Alex snaps in irritation.

A low laugh escapes Lucius's throat. These pointless arguments form the fabric of their daily routine. Victor thrives on creating chaos for entertainment, Alex remains permanently hostile toward the world, and Teajun silently observes everything unfold like a psychological experiment.

Finally, Lucius ends the discussion. “Send the vintage wine. Maintaining the corporate relationship is sufficient.”

He disconnects the call and slides the phone back into his pocket just as a hesitant knock sounds against his bedroom door. Walking over, he pulls it open to find Tessa standing outside.

She wears a simple white top and loose black trouser. Her hair falls freely over her shoulders, entirely free of makeup or extra effort. Yet, she looks dangerously beautiful. Her wide grey eyes lift toward his with careful deliberation.

“Can I… talk to you for a minute?”

Lucius steps aside immediately, inviting her in. “Come in.”

She walks inside quietly, moving cautiously around him. She wants to trust his presence, he realizes, but she remains entirely uncertain if she should. Given her trauma, her hesitation makes sense.

He gestures toward the armchair beside the bed. “Sit.”

She obeys instantly. The dim illumination inside the room softens her features, making her smooth skin seem to glow beneath the warm lamplight.

Looking at those grey eyes, Lucius realizes just how dangerous they truly are.

He sits at the edge of the mattress across from her, watching her in silence for a few seconds before finally breaking the quiet.

“What is it?”

Tessa intertwines her fingers tightly in her lap before answering in a low voice. “I want to visit my shop tomorrow.” She hesitates, her tone dropping softer. “I want to start designing dresses again.”

A distinct tremor of anxiety shakes her voice, as if she genuinely expects an immediate, cold refusal.

But the truth is, a part of Lucius feels a sense of relief hearing those words.

For the last few days, Tessa merely survives, existing like a ghost inside his mansion while carrying fear around like it belongs beneath her skin.

Now, at least, she wants to rebuild something for herself.

Still, the graphic memory of that fateful night flashes through his mind instantly.

He vividly remembers the rainwater flooding the empty alleyway, the fresh blood staining the concrete, and Tessa’s bleeding, trembling body pressed against the dirty brick wall while those bastards surround her like animals.

That is the first time he sees her—terrified, and trying to fight even when fear already takes over her entire body.

He still pictures the way her grey eyes look at him.

Shocked. Defensive. Broken. Like she expects him to hurt her too.

Something dark twists inside his chest at the memory, causing his jaw to tighten hard.

After several long seconds of heavy silence, he finally asks, “Do you remember who attacks you that night?”

The change in her expression is immediate. Her body stiffens, and her breathing becomes uneven.

“I am buying fabric…” she whispers slowly. “Then suddenly someone grabs me from behind…” Her voice breaks off completely as her eyes slowly fill with tears. “…after that, I do not remember anything.”

The atmosphere inside the room suddenly turns unbearably heavy, and a cold, violent, slow-burning rage starts rising inside Lucius.

He stands up and walks toward the study table near the window where a black file rests, waiting for him.

Victor already collects the CCTV footage from the alley, Alex handles the legal background checks, and Lucius simply waits for this final confirmation from her.

He picks up the file, returns to her side, and places it directly in front of her. She looks up, confused.

Lucius speaks quietly. “I know everything.”

The colour immediately drains from her face. She does not even open the file as her eyes become wetter.

Fuck.

Lucius can handle gunshots, blood, torture, and death without blinking, but women crying—especially Tessa—creates an uncomfortable, suffocating pressure inside his chest that he does not know how to deal with.

When she finally whispers in a broken voice, “They are harassing me…”

His hands curl into fists instantly. He slowly lowers himself in front of her until she is forced to look directly at him.

Then he speaks calmly. “Look at me, sweetheart.”

Her watery eyes slowly lift, and he reaches forward carefully to hold her hand gently.

“You’re safe here.”

A tear slips down her cheek.

“Nothing will happen to you again.”

Right then, his phone rings, breaking the heavy moment. It is Victor, and Lucius answers immediately.

“We have them,” Victor says coldly.

Lucius's jaw twitches.

“Four men,” Victor continues. “Picked them up from the same alley.”

Alex’s voice comes from somewhere nearby in the background. “Everything matches. Bastards have been doing this shit for months.”

Then Teajun speaks calmly. “We’re at the warehouse near the river.”

Victor laughs darkly. “Lucius, hurry the fuck up before I kill one of them myself.”

Lucius answers with icy finality “Touch them before I arrive and I’ll bury you with them.”

Victor bursts out laughing immediately. “See? This is real friendship.”

“You people seriously need therapy,” Alex mutters in annoyance.

“Too late for that,” Teajun dryly notes.

Lucius ends the call, allowing silence to fill the room once again.

He looks back at Tessa. She still looks scared, but somehow, whenever she stands near him, a part of her relaxes too.

He steps closer slowly and presses a soft kiss against her forehead.

Her body freezes slightly beneath the touch, but she does not pull away.

He lowers his voice near her ear. “You stay here.”

Then he calls for the maid. “Take her to Emily and Olivia’s room.”

The maid nods immediately, gently guiding a quiet Tessa out of the room.

Lucius remains standing there long after the door closes behind them, contemplating how the people in his life shift around her.

Emily already treats Tessa like a younger sister, Olivia constantly tries making her comfortable, Victor protects her in his own aggressive way, Alex quietly handles every legal problem surrounding her, and Teajun has been silently monitoring both her physical and mental condition for days.

Without even realizing it, everyone in his inner circle starts standing beside her.

But despite all that protection, Tessa still carries a deep loneliness inside her. Some trauma never disappears completely, and some scars stay buried beneath the skin forever.

Lucius walks toward the wardrobe and pulls out his black coat slowly. Then, he opens the drawer beside the desk and loads his gun with calm, chilling precision. The metallic click echoes softly through the silent room, cold and final.

Tonight is not about business anymore. Tonight is entirely personal.
