Chapter 26
The Architecture of Belonging
Lucius is still holding Tessa tightly in his arms while his cold gaze remains fixed on the dried, dark crimson bloodstains spreading across the front of her clean white top.
The blood from his heavy black tactical jacket has completely, ruthlessly soaked into the fragile threads of her fabric during their frantic embrace.
For a few long, silent seconds, he simply looks down at the contours of her face in the dim room.
She still looks devastatingly pale, her grey eyes are noticeably swollen from the relentless tears, and her entire physical body is completely, utterly exhausted from surviving the psychological shock of her trauma.
A strange, sharp wave of irritation slowly builds inside Lucius's chest at the visual; because while his cold nature can easily tolerate pools of fresh blood, raw violence, and even absolute death on the pavement,
his intellect flatly cannot tolerate the sight of fear tracking across Tessa’s features.
Finally, breaking the heavy silence, he calmly tells her in a low, level voice that she needs to change out of her ruined top immediately.
Tessa instantly shakes her head against his chest, her fingers tightening around his jacket as she quietly admits that she flatly does not want to go back to her isolation downstairs right now.
The exact millisecond those words leave her lips, something vital inside Lucius's rigid core softens entirely without his conscious permission.
This fragile girl is unknowingly, purely trying to stay close to his immediate perimeter for safety.
Suppressing a small, uncharacteristic smile from surfacing on his lips, he walks past her toward the heavy mahogany wardrobe before telling her in a raspy voice to wait right there, because he will provide her with one of his own shirts to wear.
He opens the massive wooden wardrobe doors and stands there silently for a few calculated seconds, his fingers scanning his tailored clothes before finally pulling out a deep navy blue, oversized button-down shirt.
The premium fabric is exceptionally soft and comfortable to the touch, the kind of material he normally only wears on rare, casual days away from the courtroom.
He walks back across the room toward her standing figure and hands the clothing over to her hands.
Tessa takes the heavy shirt from his fingers surprisingly carefully, almost holding the material like it is something intensely personal and sacred instead of a simple piece of spare clothing, before quietly turning away and disappearing into the adjacent bathroom.
The exact second the heavy bathroom door clicks closed; a dense, complete silence fills the space of his bedroom once again.
Lucius slowly turns his head to look toward the ticking wall clock.
It is exactly 5:30 a.m. Under any ordinary circumstances, the entire massive estate should still be deeply asleep at this ungodly hour of the morning.
But tonight’s trajectory has been far from normal or predictable for his organization.
Fresh, dried blood still covers the sharp ridges of his knuckles, and dark, sticky crimson stains mark the cuffs of his expensive shirt from the warehouse.
Yet strangely, for the first time in consecutive years of his violent career, his analytical mind feels profoundly, beautifully calm.
Usually, executing raw street violence only drags more consuming darkness and chaos out of his soul. Tonight, it has not done that at all.
Right then, the bedroom door opens softly without a warning, and Olivia walks seamlessly into the space, followed closely behind by Alex, Victor, Emily, and Teajun.
Victor smirks widely the exact microsecond his eyes land on Lucius's frame, while Emily’s face immediately flushes with a bright, playful excitement.
Olivia covers her mouth with her fingers to stop herself from laughing out loud at his posture, Alex leans his shoulder casually against the wall with a thoroughly exhausted expression from the night's clean-up, and Teajun simply stares at his face with that same annoying,
hyper-intelligent knowing look he always utilizes.
Lucius can already tell from their expressions that they have effortlessly figured out the shift in his protocols.
And honestly, looking at their faces, he knows he is not doing a very good job of hiding his own inner reaction either.
Without his analytical mind ever consciously realizing the slip, he has been standing there smiling entirely to himself in the quiet room, and every single person in his inner circle has noticed the rare anomaly.
Victor lets out a low, echoing whistle into the silence. “Damn. Lucius smiling like a human being? After ten fucking years of freezing the city?”
Lucius instantly lifts his hand to show him his middle finger, his expression darkening in mock warning, but strangely enough, profound emotional warmth settles inside his chest instead of his usual cold irritation.
For the first time in years, this fortified limestone mansion actually feels vibrant and alive to his senses.
Before this morning, the walls of the house have only ever known a suffocating silence, high-stakes business calls, concealed weapons, and fresh blood from the streets.
But today, there is genuine human laughter echoing through his private quarters.
Emily crosses her arms dramatically over her chest, stepping forward to tease his posture about finally acting like a normal man capable of experiencing actual love, attachment, and human relationships.
Lucius immediately pins her with his cold gaze.
“Watch your tongue carefully, Emily,” he murmurs, his voice a low warning.
She simply laughs even harder at his defence, entirely unbothered by his lethal reputation.
Right then, the heavy bathroom door unlocks with a sharp click, and the entire room automatically falls into a dead, expectant silence. Lucius’s dark eyes move toward the opening door instantly, his breath catching, and then Tessa walks out into the room wearing his navy blue oversized shirt.
For a few long, heavy seconds, Lucius’s brilliant, analytical mind literally goes completely blank.
The tailored shirt looks absolutely massive on her small frame.
The long sleeves cover almost the entirety of her slender hands, bunched up at her wrists, while the hem of the navy fabric reaches all the way down to her thighs.
Her damp hair rests loosely over her soft shoulders, carrying the scent of his soap, and somehow, under the warm lights, she looks unbelievably, dangerously soft—like some innocent, fragile little thing that has accidentally, blindly wandered into a monster’s violent world.
At first, Tessa only keeps her wide grey eyes locked onto his face, seeking his reaction.
Then, her focus expands and she suddenly realizes that his entire inner circle is standing right there in the room watching her and her face instantly turns a deep, burning red with embarrassment.
She awkwardly starts pulling at the oversized sleeves to hide her hands, while Lucius utterly fails to stop a low laugh from escaping past his own throat.
Fuck. She looks cute. She looks dangerously, intoxicatingly cute to his senses.
Emily practically squeals with delight from the side, while Olivia completely bursts out laughing at her expression.
Victor clutches his chest with both hands dramatically, gasping as if his eyes have just witnessed the most shocking, impossible event on the face of the earth.
Even though Lucius wants to growl and tell them all to shut the fuck up to preserve his authority, strangely enough, he feels entirely calm.
Tessa stands there in the centre of the room completely embarrassed, her cheeks flushed, but Lucius's sharp observation notices something incredibly important about her posture.
She does not look uncomfortable or trapped by their presence anymore.
She looks relaxed. Like for the very first time since her home turned into rubble, this massive, terrifying mansion actually feels a little bit like her secure place too.
As the morning light slowly arrives past the grand windows, the estate becomes unusually, beautifully alive.
Emily and Olivia will not stop laughing and teasing her about her appearance, Victor and Alex keep yelling creative insults at each other from the upstairs hallway, and Teajun stands quietly by the banister with a coffee mug in his hand, silently judging everyone's mental stability.
And in the absolute middle of all that beautiful, noisy chaos, Tessa stands quietly wearing his navy shirt.
No matter how much his logical mind tries to force his eyes to look away, his gaze keeps drifting right back toward her figure.
She keeps trying her best to fold the heavy sleeves up properly, but every few minutes the loose fabric slips down over her fingers again.
And for some reason, the entire domestic scene affects Lucius far more than it ever should, because it looks normal.
It looks like there is an actual life waiting for him outside the boundary of fresh blood, hidden guns, and sudden death.
Even during breakfast in the grand dining hall, the exact same pattern keeps happening.
Every single time Tessa reaches out her hand to pick up her spoon, the heavy oversized sleeves drop right back over her fingers, blocking her movements.
After silently watching her struggle with the fabric for several consecutive minutes from his head of the table, Lucius finally breaks his silence and calls out to her. “Hey, Tessa. Come over here.”
She quietly stands up from her chair and walks over to his side, her head down.
Lucius gently reaches out his large hands, taking her cold wrist between his fingers before methodically, carefully folding the heavy sleeves up to her elbows for her.
Her hands are freezing, and the entire time his fingers move against the fabric, she silently stares down at his face with wide, unblinking grey eyes.
From directly beside their chairs, Teajun suddenly speaks up, sipping his hot black coffee with a dry delivery. “Looks like the man who writes the book on discipline has officially forgotten all his rules and regulations tonight.”
Lucius immediately shoots the doctor an irritated, warning look across the table.
“Shut up, you mentally unstable doctor. Focus on your chart and check her blood pressure the moment breakfast is completed.”
Teajun merely looks bored at the threat, taking another slow sip of his beverage, but the subtle corner of his mouth still carries that annoying, knowing smile.
From the upstairs lounge, Victor and Alex suddenly start yelling over the banister again, their voices booming through the house. “Hey, you arrogant asses! Get your asses up here right now! We’re opening another expensive wine bottle from the vault!”
Lucius shakes his head in mock exasperation, dropping his napkin on the table as he stands up from his chair.
“I'm coming up. Prepare the wine glasses for the table and watch your fucking mouths around her, you little brats,” he calls back.
Victor merely laughs even louder from upstairs, while Teajun quietly mutters to himself that everyone in this organization is completely unbearable sometimes, before adding softly that somehow, they still act like blood brothers.
Lucius does not offer a verbal reply to the doctor's statement, because the absolute, terrifying truth is—Teajun is not wrong at all.
These dangerous, loyal people are his family.
Olivia looks over toward Tessa's quiet figure and smiles softly, her eyes crinkling before she teases her by saying she looks absolutely tiny drowning inside Lucius's massive shirt.
Without thinking of his own control, Lucius looks back at Tessa one last time before stepping out of the room, and that is the exact second his intellect realizes a beautiful truth.
She actually looks happy wearing his threads.
Every few seconds, her small fingers brush unconsciously, gently over the blue fabric of the shirt, like her bruised soul has already found a profound sense of absolute comfort inside his armour.
A dangerous, dark feeling slowly settles deep inside Lucius's chest, taking a permanent root. Possession. Unyielding attachment. Maybe something infinitely worse and more permanent than a temporary distraction.
Eventually, he heads upstairs to the lounge with Teajun following behind his stride.
Victor and Alex have already successfully popped the cork on the dark wine bottle, pouring the rich liquid.
Dark red wine fills the crystal glasses until the entire air of the room smells heavily of vintage alcohol.
Victor sprawls his massive frame across the leather sofa carelessly, talking between sips about Ralph’s latest illegal business deal in the city.
Apparently, some of Ralph's top distribution men almost end up in federal police custody due to a sloppy trail.
Lucius lets out a low, dangerous laugh, swirling his glass.
“Pretty normal for his operations. Corrupt men like Ralph always manage to survive the crossfire somehow. His time on the board is almost over, but suddenly the variables shift and he miraculously becomes the city’s most honest, celebrated businessman all over again for the cameras.
Fucking hypocrite.”
Victor makes a deeply disgusted face before taking another heavy sip of his wine, while Alex slowly rotates the crystal glass in his hand under the chandelier, quietly commenting that tremendously rich men always know the exact formula to wash fresh blood away with clean money.
Lucius does not provide a single word of reply to their business analysis.
Because his analytical mind is currently miles away from the docks, completely cantered somewhere else entirely.
Tessa. Standing downstairs in the light, drowning beautifully in his navy blue shirt.
And for the absolute first time in eighteen long, bloody years of balancing the dark, the massive limestone mansion finally feels less like a fortified base—and more like an actual home.
