Chapter 27
The Geometry of Friction
The morning sun filters softly through the towering trees of the estate, casting long, fractured shadows across the manicured lawns.
After the domestic chaos of the dining room finally settles, Tessa, Emily, and Olivia step out into the expansive garden just for chilling, seeking a rare moment of absolute quietude.
The air smells of damp earth and late-winter blossoms, providing a soft sanctuary that contrasts sharply with the heavy walls of the mansion.
Tessa is still drowning beautifully inside Lucius’s navy blue oversized shirt, her fingers occasionally brushing over the premium fabric as if grounding herself in its absolute warmth.
For the first time in consecutive days, the suffocating edge of her survival fear has completely vanished, replaced by the light, playful banter of the two women walking closely beside her.
On the other side of the grand house, inside the elevated, sun-drenched lounge, the atmosphere is constructed of an entirely different calibre of energy.
Lucius sits deeply in his leather chair, a crystal glass of dark red wine resting between his long fingers, while Victor, Alex, and Teajun surround the table.
Lucius has discarded his formal wear earlier, dressed now in a simple shirt and normal pants that make him look deceptively relaxed.
The deep scent of vintage alcohol fills the room, but their low, gravelly conversation is focused entirely on the raw mechanics of the previous night’s retribution—specifically, how Lucius has methodically,
ruthlessly cut the fingers one by one off those local bastards who have been harassing Tessa in the Brooklyn alleys.
Victor takes a heavy sip of his wine, a dark, dangerous smirk spreading across his handsome features as he leans back against the sofa.
“Man, I swear to God, when you start pulling out the nails of their fingers one by one… I don’t even know why, but consciously, I absolutely love it,” Victor admits with a low, chilling laugh, and his eyes flashing with an underlying malice.
“It makes me feel so completely relaxed. Or, I should say, it gives me a pure, unadulterated sense of pleasure to watch them scream for mercy.”
Teajun swirls the dark liquid in his glass, shooting his friend a flat, clinically bored look across the table.
“Hey, you absolute psychopath ass, do not stand there and openly say you enjoy mutilation like a teenager,” the doctor mutters dryly, though the corner of his mouth still carries that annoying, knowing smile.
“Some of us prefer to keep our analytical sanity intact before breakfast.”
Alex lets out a low growl of pure exhaustion, his patience with Victor's chaotic energy completely running out. “Will you two shut the fuck up about raw torture for five minutes? We are literally drinking million-dollar wine right now.”
Suddenly, a loud, high-pitched scream cuts violently through the masculine quiet of the lounge, echoing from the direction of the courtyard below.
The sudden noise is sharp enough to make everyone’s survival instincts flare instantly.
Without a single millisecond of delay, Lucius stands up from his chair, his jaw tensing as his boots move rapidly toward the wide, upstairs balcony, with the rest of his men running closely behind his stride to evaluate the threat.
But the scene waiting beneath their vantage point is anything but dangerous.
Down in the secondary courtyard, directly beside the expansive, crystal-clear swimming pool at the back of Lucius’s mansion, Emily is standing with a look of pure, triumphant mischief written across her face.
With a sudden, dramatic shove, Emily has just pushed Olivia straight into the deep end of the swimming pool.
A massive splash of water erupts into the air, and right next to the edge, Tessa is standing with her head thrown back, bursting out laughing and loudly cheering at Emily’s successful prank.
It is an actual, unfiltered sound of pure joy—one that Lucius has not heard from her throat since the night he bled on her boutique floor.
Olivia surfaces from the cold water within seconds, her elegant glasses missing and her short brown hair plastered messily against her face.
Coughing out a spray of water, a sudden wave of playful rage flares in her eyes.
Before Emily can turn around to run into safety, Olivia swims forward with a terrifying speed, reaches her wet hands out of the pool, firmly grabs Emily’s bare ankle, and pulls her down with a violent, laughing yank.
Emily shrieks in absolute terror as her balance collapses completely, her body hitting the water with another deafening splash.
The two women begin splashing water at each other ruthlessly, their ordinary day dresses completely soaked through as their laughter fills the morning air.
Standing up on the balcony, Alex watches his wife shivering in the water before a wide, genuine grin breaks across his permanently irritated face.
He drops his wine glass on the stone railing with a sharp click.
“Oh! Ho! Look at that chaos,” Alex says, his voice full of a rare, playful excitement as he looks over at his friends.
“I definitely need to go down there right now, brothers. I deserve a little bit of enjoyment too after this brutal week.”
Lucius looks down at Tessa’s radiant face, noting the absolute absence of her sadness as she watches the girls fight in the water. Soft warmth settles deep inside his own chest. “Yeah! Sure,” Lucius replies quietly, his deep voice taking on a relaxed tone. “Go handle your woman, Alex.”
Within mere minutes, the entire inner circle has rushed down the sweeping limestone stairs.
Dropping their underworld masks, the men rapidly change their simple shirt and pants into swimming costumes—loose black pants designed for the water.
One by one, Victor, Alex, and Teajun dive straight into the deep end, their loud shouting, creative insults, and playful horseplay instantly turning the pool into a chaotic arena of pure fun.
Everyone is completely submerged in the water, screaming and laughing, except for Lucius and Tessa.
The two of them choose to remain completely dry, sitting quietly side by side on the polished stone ledge at the back of the pool house, their bare feet dangling just above the ripples.
While the rest of the circle is thoroughly enjoying the physical release of the water, Lucius shifts his massive frame slightly closer to her perimeter, his unreadable eyes tracking her profile.
“You don’t want to go down there and join the madness, Tessa?” he asks, his deep voice dropping into that quiet, raspy register that always holds her nervous system captive.
Tessa looks over at his handsome face from beneath her damp curls, a small, incredibly soft smile touching her lips. “Nope,” she answers softly, her voice peaceful. “I prefer watching their sanity disappear from a safe distance.”
Lucius suppresses a genuine smile, a wave of intense possessiveness rolling through his chest at her proximity.
Why is it so hard to keep my eyes off her?
He thinks silently, noting the way his own shirt drapes over her small frame.
Lifting his hand, he calls out to the head maid waiting near the glass doors, delivering his executive orders with precision.
“Give her a fresh glass of orange juice immediately. And for the idiots in the water, bring down the premium whiskey or the vintage wine—ask them exactly what they want to drink. For my table, just bring a fresh salad.”
In less than fifteen minutes of structured movement, everything is completely ready, served on silver trays beside their stone ledge. The cold drinks are poured, the laughter from the pool grows louder, and a profound sense of domestic warmth wraps around their circle.
Lucius swirls his own drink for a long, heavy moment before his dark gaze locks ruthlessly back onto Tessa’s grey eyes.
The atmosphere between their bodies instantly tightens, turning electric and deep.
Reaching into his pocket, his long fingers brush against a velvet box before he speaks aloud, his tone absolute.
“My woman…” Lucius murmurs, his voice a low, commanding purr that cuts right through the background noise of the pool.
“Tell me exactly what you want before we officially depart for Ralph’s party by the weekend. I want to buy you a custom diamond ring. I want you to be wearing this exact mark of my name when you walk into his ballroom in front of those monsters.”
The sudden, heavy statement hits Tessa's senses like a physical blow. Her wide grey eyes fill with an immediate, absolute shock, her breath catching violently in her throat as she stares up at his unreadable features. Her fingers clamp tightly around the fabric of his blue shirt.
“And if I say yes to your ring, Lucius… what exactly do you plan to do next?” Tessa asks, her voice a trembling, defiant whisper against his dominance. “And if I choose to say no to your contract right now… then what should you do to my life?”
Before Lucius can even formulate a calculated response to her counterargument, Emily’s sharp ears catch the dialogue from the water.
Surfacing near the ledge, she throws her hands into the air and screams at the top of her lungs, her voice booming across the courtyard.
“Which part of her brain says no?! Tessa, you beautiful idiot, say yes immediately!!”
Within seconds, the rest of the pool completely abandons their horseplay to join Emily’s dramatic intervention. Victor and Alex begin chanting loudly from the deep end, splashing water toward their ledge to create absolute chaos, their voices full of mock excitement.
Teajun calmly swims toward the shallow steps, stepping completely outside the swimming pool as the water drips from his muscles.
He retrieves his towel, drying his face before looking down at Tessa’s frozen frame with a serious, clinical expression.
“Look, Tessa, from a purely logical perspective, it is a vastly better chance for you to take an expensive diamond ring from a billionaire lawyer while his wallet is open,” the doctor mutters dryly, though his eyes carry that same teasing smirk. “Don't waste his financial guilt.”
Tessa looks around the circle of faces—Emily’s playful shouting, Victor’s chaotic laughing, and the intense, unblinking stare of the man sitting right beside her thigh. She swallows hard, her throat dry, before she speaks softly, her voice small but unyieldingly firm against their pressure.
“I know exactly what his protection means, guys…” Tessa murmurs, her fingers tracing the silver necklace around her neck. “But I honestly do not need his ring right now.”
An immediate, synchronized groan of pure disappointment tracks across everyone’s faces in the pool, Victor dramatically sinking beneath the surface as if he has been shot.
But before the silence can stretch into discomfort, Tessa takes a deep breath, her grey eyes locking straight back into Lucius’s intense stare as she delivers her final truth.
“I actually need a little more time to truly know him more,” she adds quietly, her voice trembling but brave. I need to find out who he really is behind the shadows, she thinks to herself, holding his gaze. “I want to know the man beneath the suits before I carry his mark.”
Olivia swims over to the ledge, resting her wet chin on her arms as she looks up at Tessa’s face with a profound layer of respect.
“She is actually entirely right, boys,” Olivia asserts smoothly, her legal mind defending her choice.
“A girl deserves her sanity before she signs her life away to a Blackwood.”
Alex and Victor immediately burst out howling from the centre of the pool, thoroughly enjoying Lucius's rare tactical defeat on the board. They begin splashing massive waves of water toward Lucius's normal shirt, their insults roaring through the garden.
“Oh, look at the big mafia king getting rejected by the dress designer!”
Victor screams between bouts of laughter, waving his arms dramatically.
“Now that you do not possess the permission to give her a ring today, Lucius, bring your arrogant ass straight into the pool! It has been almost a terribly long time since our circle managed to chill like this without a business call. Come on, bro! Dive the fuck in!!”
Lucius pins his right-hand man with a freezing, warning look, but as he turns his face back to look down at Tessa’s small, smiling lips, the remaining ice completely melts from his features.
He does not care about his defeat. Because looking at her relaxed posture, he realizes something beautiful—she is finally safe enough in his world to say no to his face.
And as the chaotic laughter of his brothers echoes across the water, the fortress walls finally feel entirely like a home.
