The pain was nearly unbearable. Every nerve ending felt like it was on fire until nothing existed. I closed my eyes and uttered one last prayer to a god that had never answered me. I had known something would go wrong, just now what it was. Now I did.
Just let Ivy be safe.
Slowly, the agony morphed into numbness, and light blazed around me. Supposedly, when you die, your life flashes before your eyes. That was something I could confirm was true. Images of Niko curled against me. Trey sitting at the computer, laughing at something. Teaching Maya to ride a bike. Football games with crowds roaring. Water boiling on the stove. The color of Ivy’s hair when the sun shined on it.
I ignored the emotions welling up inside of me. It was too late. I pushed away everything except what mattered to me most. The feeling of Niko’s kiss on my lips and the image of the woman I loved burned into my mind as an explosion echoed in the night.
Darkness consumed me, leaving me floating in an unnamed abyss.
