The Moon
S he was beautiful in the starlight. She was beautiful in any light.
I’d watched as she broke away from the pack and struck out on her own, ignoring my companions to trail after her instead. I didn’t plan to approach, I just wanted to see what she would do after setting off alone.
Shifters were not solitary creatures. They craved the companionship of their pack, the closeness, the contact that it offered. A pack run was the opportune time to accomplish both.
It wasn’t my place to be jealous—I knew that—but my blood had boiled at the thought another male would disturb her when she’d finally let herself shed her guard. It boiled even more she didn’t seem to care. She’d hardly moved a muscle at the sound of footsteps she surely undoubtedly heard heading in her direction.
No, it wasn’t my place to feel jealous—to feel anything—around her, but I did. I wanted to know her—really know her. I wanted to know what thoughts were hidden behind her carefully impassive face and false smiles. I wanted to know what made her shoulders tense when she walked down the halls. I wanted to see her smile at me the way she smiles at Isaac and hear her laugh ring out without restraint.
I wanted all of those things, if only they had been mine to take.
