14. Koi Adora Morgan

“You have been quieter than usual.” Merci’s voice in my ear startled me from my thoughts.

I blinked twice and slowly turned to look at her.

Tears welled in my eyes so heavily that they were seconds from spilling over.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” she questioned, leaning closer and wrapping me in a hug.

I inhaled sharply, wanting nothing more than to say the words, but nothing came out. I sniffled, wiped away the evidence of my tears, then sat back with a smile. “I’m okay, sis. Let’s dance.”

I reached for her hand and yanked her behind me. Before we could get out of the section we were in, she stopped me. “You want to take a shot first?”

With a quick shake of my head, I continued to pull us deeply into the sea of people.

I sighed in relief because hiding under the canopy of bodies was comforting.

Instead of thinking, I began to sway my body to the music until I completely lost myself.

Marni joined us at some point, adding to the fun of the night.

Hitting the club with my cousins was becoming one of my favorite bonding activities we did.

Who didn’t like getting cute, taking photos, taking shots, then dancing like you were in a nineties sitcom?

“Is that . . .” I heard Merci start to say before she said, “and is.”

Curious about who she saw, I slowly turned and noticed Judea standing at the edge of the crowd. He didn’t move a muscle, but I knew why he was there. A groan slipped through my lips as my head fell backward. Han’some was supposed to be at home with Skye, so why was he here ruining my fun?

Turning to my cousins, I pouted. “I can’t do anything.”

Marni chuckled, tossing an arm over my shoulder. “I mean, at least you lasted half an hour this time.” She turned her glassy eyes to her sister before chuckling like a maniac. “Pay up, ho.” She extended her hand and rubbed her fingertips together.

Merci rolled her eyes, but she dug in that purse and placed two twenties in Marni’s hand, along with a preroll. I pushed Marni’s arm off me. “Wow. Y’all taking bets and shit?”

Merci pinned me in place with a glare. “I should be the one mad. I will never have faith in Han’some again.

He runs a strict fucking program, and I would’ve never expected that from him.

” Her eyes widened before she tilted her chin upward.

“Girl, you better go before he comes over here and ruins the fun for the rest of us.”

She spun me around by my shoulders and pushed me toward the direction Judea was in.

Figuring there was no point in staying since I’d already been found out, I dragged my body his way.

I hadn’t even posted anything online tonight, and I’d turned my location off as a precaution, yet this nigga still managed to find me dead in the middle of a sea of bodies.

I bypassed Judea without acknowledging him.

My heels clacked against the pavement with every angry step that took me closer to the awaiting Eskimo truck.

Judea opened the back door to reveal a waiting Han’some and Nyari.

My husband glanced at me and did a quick survey of my outfit but kept quiet, so I did too as I slid on the buttery seat.

I did feel some relief to be off my feet; however, I kept it to myself.

“Koi,” Skye said sleepily, rubbing her eyes. She released a big, little yawn, making me feel warm inside. I opened my arms for her, and she climbed into my lap to rest her head on my chest. Wrapping her in an embrace, I began to play with her ear until she was fast asleep.

For the entire drive, I kept my eyes on the city blurring by.

A time or two, I felt Han’some’s eyes on me, but for some reason, he was allowing us to stew in this weighted silence.

I knew he wouldn’t be happy about me sneaking out when they went to the grocery store.

I just needed some fresh air and a minute to forget reality. He couldn’t even give me that, though.

It was comical how Han’some was always so quick to snatch me out of the club ever since we got married, mainly because before we said I do, he couldn’t keep his ass out of the club. He’d flipped a switch on his personality, and it was equally scary and intriguing.

When we got home, he took Skye from my arms before getting out.

I slid out the same door with them, slid my purse on my shoulder, and strutted into the house.

While he went to lay Skye down in her bed, I went to our bedroom and straight into the closet to undress.

I tossed my clothes in the basket, then wrapped my body in my Versace robe.

I nearly jumped out of my skin when I spun around to find Han’some leaning against the doorway. “What?” I snapped on him because his silence was starting to unsettle me.

He rubbed his jaw with a smirk. “Had fun tonight?”

I rolled my eyes and sucked my teeth. Turning back toward my drawer, I found a pair of pajamas to wear to bed. “I was barely there long enough to have any fun, and you know that.” I was so angry I slammed the drawer so hard it shook the dresser.

“You were there long enough, and we missed you.” He shrugged, and I knew he didn’t regret his choice. He would surely do it again too.

I mugged him with a fold of my arms. “Don’t bring Skye into this. You just don’t like to see me having a good time.” I pointed at him for emphasis.

He chuckled, further annoying me. I went stomping past him so I could take my shower. “That’s not true. I love when you have a good time, just not without me. That don’t sit right with my soul.”

I shook my head, trying to fight the smile that wanted to reveal itself. “You’re so obsessed with me.”

I yelped when he smacked me on the ass. “And what about it?”

My steps slowed when I walked into the bathroom to find the pregnancy test I’d taken earlier sitting on the counter.

All the blood in my body started to boil, and my heart raced so fiercely I thought it would leave me standing there.

When I spun around, Han’some stood behind me with a grin.

He was truly pleased with himself, and I wanted to strangle him.

“Why were you in my business?” I questioned with a raised brow.

The smile on his face faded. “Girl, we live in the same house and use the same bathroom every day.”

I stomped my foot because I wasn’t satisfied with that answer. I tossed my hands in the air. “Well, what did you have to put in the trash?”

His head slowly tilted to the side. “Are you really mad I found the test in the trash right now?”

“Um, yeah, ’cause mind your business,” I retorted.

He closed the distance between us so quickly it scared me. Wrapping an arm around my waist, he snatched me into his chest. “You are my business, Adora. Stop fucking playing with me. I pay so much attention to you that I know the brand and absorbency you like for the tampons you wear.”

Like second nature, my body melted into him. His exhales tickled my neck, along with his facial hair. I giggled then put my hands on his chest. Using all the force I could muster, I pushed him away from me. “Move.” I didn’t want to be close to him right now. I wanted him out of my face.

“Why don’t you seem happy about this?” He was studying my face so hard that I had to look away.

“Because I’m not,” I replied, finally finding the courage to stare him in the eyes.

The cloud of sadness that fell over him like a blanket made me feel like I was going to fall through the floor.

For a minute, he didn’t say or do anything.

He just stood there, staring at the floor and toiling in the gravity of my words.

Finally, his head slowly bobbed up and down, then he backed away. “Word.”

For some reason, that one word felt like an arrow to the heart. My eyes swelled with tears, and I collapsed against the counter. Glancing down, I picked up the positive test resting by my hand. The word pregnant was the last thing I saw before the world became a blurry mess from my forceful sobs.
