Chapter 13 I Woke Up There

That fall really knocked me out.

When I woke again, I was lying on an extremely comfortable big bed.

Above me was a wide, bright room.

I jerked.

I'd blacked out from drinking. Where was I?

"You're awake."

A flat, unrippled voice came from the side.

My heart stopped for a beat. I snapped my head over.

Only then did I notice a sleek designer desk by the window.

Ji Yanli sat in the chair behind it.

He had changed out of last night's cashmere sweater. He was wearing a pressed black shirt.

The sleeves were rolled casually to his elbows, showing smooth-lined forearms.

I opened my mouth. My throat was too dry to make a sound.

My head was tangled like a ball of hemp.

How was I here?

Ji Yanli... he brought me home?

"You... you brought me home?"

Ji Yanli gave a careless "Mm."

"I couldn't exactly leave an unconscious, filthy drunk and walk away.

"If you died in some gutter, I'd get into trouble."

A rush of anger hit me. I couldn't help cursing inwardly.

Fuck. If it was trouble, then don't mind me.

But then I thought about the sorry state I'd been in last night. He'd picked me up. He hadn't left me on the street or let a patrol cop take me. It seemed... like a scrap of leftover kindness.

Forget it. I couldn't repay kindness with spite.

I pressed down that bit of displeasure, threw off the covers, and got ready to get out of bed.

The moment I moved, I suddenly realized something was wrong.
