Chapter 48 Spikes in the Hallway

The moment I stepped out the door, Tang Xiaomang, who had been waiting not far down the corridor, came up at once.

"Brother Ye, is he okay? I bought water."

His words cut off.

Ji Yanli had been leaning on me. The instant he caught sight of Tang Xiaomang behind me, it was like some dangerous switch had been hit. He bristled all at once.

He shoved me away hard and pointed at Tang Xiaomang. "Why is he still here?"

"Qin Ye, tell me. Why do you take him everywhere you go?"

In that instant, I was sure he was not completely drunk.

I could tell his mind, at least most of it, was still clear.

Those drunk words in the private room that had looked out of control.

That kiss, messy and lost.

How much of it had been the alcohol.

And how much of it had been... an excuse?

Anger at being played and tested, mixed with something I could not name, slammed straight up into my head.

"Ji Yanli."

"Have you pretended enough?"

Right then, the door of the next private room was shoved open.

A figure stormed out, his face tight with impatience.

"Noise, noise, noise. Why do you two start fighting the second you meet?"

It was the young doctor who had treated me that day at Ji Yanli's apartment.

He glared at me first, annoyed.

Then he turned to Ji Yanli. "Ji Yanli, can you even do this or not? I fucking called him over for you, for friendship's sake, and you turn around and start fighting with him again? Can you grow a brain?"

Ji Yanli pressed his lips together and said nothing.
