19. Derek
Locking my phone, I roll my eyes as I stuff it in my back pocket, heading up the stairs of my mom’s house in Maryland.
So much for asking the guys for advice…
Georgia has been quiet our entire ride here–too quiet.
There wasn't any slick commentary or flirty one-liners from her at all. Only pure silence. I don’t know if I should be thankful or scared by the fact that she hasn’t spoken.
It’s… unnerving.
I try to catch her eye as we stand on the doorstep, but her back is ramrod straight like she’d been sent to her very own sage green electric chair.
The only peaceful thing to come out of this situation is Delilah. She has no clue what’s going on other than the fact that she’ll be seeing her abuela1 tonight. I smile slightly, watching momentarily as Delilah plays with her doll, before my focus tracks back to Georgia.
Gently grabbing her hand, I give it a squeeze.
“Everything will be okay,” I mouth to her as she forces a smile my way.
“I sure hope so…”
When the door swings open, my mother stands front and center in the large doorway, her smile bright as she looks between the three of us.
“Honey, come in!” She grins, pulling me in for a hug, kissing my cheek before letting me go and picking up Delilah.
Delilah giggles as her abuela showers her in kisses, wiggling around in her arms.
When my mother finishes her parade of love for my daughter, she stops and stares at Georgia, tilting her head with a calculating look in her eyes.
“This is Georgia,” I say, taking a step closer to the blonde, placing a hand on the small of her back, pulling her into me.
“My wife.”
