Chapter 61
Aiden’s phoenix soared up over the Jensens’ home. Mac’s eagle flew on his left. They advanced toward the hospital. He could see numerous flight shifters up ahead with glowing green eyes. He couldn’t see his father yet, but he knew he was on his way.
“They are the enemy,” Aiden said.
“Yes. We’ll take care of them,” his beast said.
The enemies in the sky—falcons, eagles, and hawks arranged themselves into an attack formation and headed toward them. These shifters, all with glowing green eyes, sold their souls to his father. All they wanted in return was the ability to shift, but now what? They could shift into their beasts, but they were slaves to his father’s wishes. Did they know they were expendable to his father?
“Idiots. They must have a death wish,” the phoenix noted.
“Make sure Mac isn’t harmed,” Aiden said.
Just as the words were telepathically spoken, Mac whizzed on ahead of the phoenix.
“That may be harder than I anticipated.”
He picked up the pace to stay close to the eagle shifter. He was impressed she was heading straight for the attacking creatures. There were so many of them. If he got out ahead of her, he could hit them with his flames without burning her as well.
“We should have probably told her our thoughts ahead of time,” Aiden said.
“We didn’t know how many there’d be. Ideally, we would have similar numbers of flight shifters to help and we could focus on our father.”
A blast of flames from down on the ground caught his attention. The flames were odd. There was no scent or heat from them.
“Oh no. What’s happening?” Aiden asked.
The phoenix snuck a quick look as he continued to keep pace with Mac. The wolves were fighting with other shifters near a large brick building. The building appeared partially destroyed, but he could sense the magic vibrating around the building. The witch.
“The witch’s illusion worked,” the phoenix noted.
“Oh, good. Now, light those shifters up before Mac does something crazy.”
So, he did.
