Chapter 62

Jamie shadowed Heath as he paced the Jensen home, baby carrier and changeling strapped to the alpha wolf’s body. Heath had a radio and cellphone in each hand. Whenever he had a need to either receive or provide information faster, he had Jamie use his powers.

Jamie found himself so busy that he wasn’t able to worry much about Aiden or his friends. Iris and May were helping Beau coordinate the bear shifters’ activities.

Leah remained with Piper at Grey Lake Hospital. From what they reported, Piper’s illusion had worked. Those soldiers moving to attack the building turned tail and ran once the fake explosion hit. As Williamson’s men fled, Laker wolf and flight shifters flanked their position and attacked.

Finn and some members of his pack, some in their beast mode, held their own at Grey Lake College. They repelled a group of enemy shifters that had attempted to break into the dormitories. Some of those who fought in their human forms were armed with versions of the phoenix fire guns that Jasper’s SCB tech guys had been able to lend to him.

“We need to get some flight shifters out to the mountains near my place,” Beau yelled to May and Iris. “Brady reports a lot of the attacks are coming from above.”

“Can they hold them off from the ground?” Heath asked.

“They are, but those guys are vicious. We’ve got some shifters with sharp force injuries to their faces.”

“Why not send a few of the falcons that are working with the wolves?” Jamie asked. “They seem to be doing well there.”

“It could be they’re trying to distract us,” Deacon said. “Lure more of our fighters out there and then attack us heavily in the center of town.”

“Any word from Aiden?” Heath asked Jamie.

He shook his head. “I can reach out and see if I can contact him.”

“If he doesn’t answer, try Mac, too,” Heath said.

Jamie nodded. He closed his eyes and focused on Aiden.

“Aiden? Are you OK?”

Nothing.

“Mac? Mac? Checking your status. Answer me if you can.”

“We’re OK,” Mac replied. “We’ve taken out most of the flight shifters we’ve encountered. I’ve torn some up, and our phoenix is just finishing up the last of them. He incinerated them. They’re just gone.”

“Oh, my God!”

“We had no choice. They wouldn’t retreat,” Mac said.

“What about Williamson?”

“No sign of him yet.”

“OK, let me know if you need anything.”

“Will do. Wait!”

“What is it?”

Nothing.

“Mac!”

“He’s here, and he’s coming straight at Aiden.”
