Chapter 50
The Cabin in the Woods
ATTENTION, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: TODAY is the day.
Kylie sits cross-legged on the floor beside the stained mattress, ears pricked. Something is different. Reaching over, she touches Sydney’s arm.
“Wake up,” she says, her voice low and urgent. “Someone’s here.”
Sydney stirs, then rolls over to look at Kylie with sleepy eyes. “He’s back?”
“I don’t know.” Frowning, Kylie sits as still as she can and concentrates, willing her ears to pick up every sound. “I swear I heard a car pull up and a door slam shut. And I heard a voice . . . but not a man’s. A woman’s. But I don’t hear it now.”
Sydney’s eyes widen, and she sits up immediately. “What should we do?” she asks. “Do you still want to stick with the plan and wait for Thing Two to come in and then—”
“No,” Kylie says, shaking her head and scrambling to her feet. She extends a hand to help Sydney up. “No waiting. We scream. We scream as loud as we can for as long as we can.”
In the dim light of the cabin, their gazes meet. Then they both take deep breaths, and start screaming.
