Chapter 10
In the car back to the office, I breathe, replaying our kiss. My mind flashes to her face and her body. I know I said we could work together, but we can’t. I’m too attracted to her. I can’t be professional with her. I wouldn’t be able to control myself.
I pull out my phone and start typing an email to Adam.
Thanks for introducing me to Dani. She’s great. I’m concerned about your personal relationship with her. I understand your push for PR. I’ll hire someone. But I don’t want you to have their ear. I appreciate your continued support.
“Fuck that guy,” I huff and hit send.
I then call my favorite person from Harris Ventures—Greg Wilson, the chief operating officer.
“Gideon, my man,” he booms.
“Hey, I know I still owe you drinks. Quick question.”
“Shoot, brother.”
“Dani Sommer. What’s the deal with her and Adam?” When silence follows, I press. “Greg?”
“It’s something,” he says after a moment. “That’s all I’ll say.”
Hmm. Not the answer I was anticipating.
“Give me one example, and I’ll leave you alone.”
“They are no longer together, but he pays her rent,” he whispers like it’s secret intel.
“Got it. Drinks soon. I swear.”
He pays her rent? She told me she broke up with him, yet he’s still paying the rent; something doesn’t add up.
And the fucking ring on her finger—was it an engagement ring?
It’s a hell of an expensive piece. I doubt she would be able to buy something like that for herself.
Wouldn’t she have given it back if they’re over?
Why is she still wearing it? My gut tells me there’s still something between them.
