Chapter 46
Mondays are always busy. Before noon, I’ve pitched reporters, sent drafted press releases for clients to review, and confirmed what work needs to be accomplished this week.
Adam Harris’s name shines on my phone, and I let it go to voicemail. Then, a text flashes on my screen.
Adam Harris
I still worry about you. I haven’t heard from you in days.
What a drama queen! It’s nice that he cares, but seriously, I told him we are no longer together.
Dani Sommer
I’m alive. Working hard.
An hour later, he texts again.
Adam Harris
Why did you tell Allison to cancel the card?
Dani Sommer
We broke up. I don’t need it anymore.
A few minutes pass, and I send another text.
Dani Sommer
I’m going to start paying the rent too.
Adam Harris
No. We already talked about this.
I don’t respond, but I make a mental note to talk to the property manager about changing who gets the invoice each month.
Sautéing spinach, which sounds way fancier and more complex than throwing some avocado oil in a pan with a bag of spinach, I call Kelsey on speakerphone.
“The jet setter,” she answers, and I laugh, pouring myself a glass of chilled white wine to go with the simple dinner.
“I like him, Kelsey.”
“Of course you do! What’s not to like about hot, rich men?”
“Ha ha. But … he’s different.”
“He’s so young for you,” she chides, knowing I love older guys.
“I think it’s that he wasn’t born in the States, and he just has a different point of view and vibe than other guys.”
“Please, for the love of God, take things slow.”
Dumping my chicken breast chunks out of the air fryer, her words sink in. Slow. It’s not something I’m good at.
“You’re in no rush …” she says after a brief silence. “If you were, well, I think Adam would be the guy we were talking about.”
“Exactly. I’m in no rush. I’m living my life on my own timeline.”
“Cheers to that! You will never guess who I matched with over the weekend.”
“Who? Give me a hint!”
“It’s one of our favorite bartenders.”
“No!” I yell into the phone. “Ben?”
“Oh, yes, Ben.”
“Finally! You two have only been bantering for years.”
“We have a date this weekend. He said he is opening up a restaurant in Williams Bay too.”
“The next time I’m in town, we will have to go! You two could be a great match now that you’re old enough for him.” I giggle.
“I forgot about that! Looks like I am old enough to ride that ride now,” she retorts. “Shit! I should have opened with this.”
“What?”
“Ador. It closed a couple of months ago.”
Ador. A restaurant I have not thought about in years. Sorin’s restaurant.
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, Ben’s will replace it.”
“Way to bury the lead, Kelsey!” I laugh. “Ben always hated Sorin. Seems odd yet fitting.”
“You were on the sexcapade weekend, so I didn’t want to put him on your mind.”
“I appreciate it. Adam was enough of a little voice in the back of my head. I definitely didn’t need Sorin, either.
” I take a big sip of wine, not wanting to think about summer 2017 and how crazy it was.
“I’m surprised my parents didn’t tell me about Ador.
It’s not like they don’t drive past it every day. ”
I should call my parents. When was the last time I even talked to them? It’s been over a couple months, for sure. I shake my head, resume my conversation with Kelsey, and we chat for another hour, eating our dinners while on the phone.
