Chapter 72

After making plans to see Kelsey while I’m in Wisconsin, Sorin weighs too heavily on my mind. Then a thought bubbles to the surface, I should call my mom. We haven’t spoken in months. It’s time to break the silence.

She answers with surprise. “Good morning?”

“Hey, so … you’ll never guess who died,” I say, trying to keep my voice even.

“Um … who?”

“Sorin.”

“Finally.” Her reaction is immediate. “One less thing to worry about.”

“Mom! That’s terrible!” But I can’t help laughing a little with her.

“How did you hear?” she asks.

There’s a question I don’t want to answer. “His brother told me.”

“You’re still in contact with those people?”

I pause, my stomach twisting, hearing the tension in her voice. I’ve never told my parents about the Bitcoin or really anything about Declan.

“It’s … complicated.” I sigh. “But can I stay with you for the funeral?”

“You’re actually going to the funeral?” She sounds surprised.

“Yeah. I think it’ll be cathartic.” It’s a convenient lie, but saying anything else feels too complicated.

There’s silence, then a resigned sigh. “Of course, Dani … Take care of yourself. It’s good to let this chapter end.”

“When I have more details. I’ll let you know.” I hang up, sitting in my apartment, letting the words sink in.

The Sorin saga. I thought it ended years ago, but as I glance at my cracked phone screen, I think about his lasting impact.
