CHAPTER 22

THE DOOR HE LEAVES OPEN

Mara heard the lock turn before she heard Adrian's footsteps.

She was standing in the middle of the apartment with her phone in her hand.

Lena was asleep on the sofa.

Marcus had gone downstairs to check the garage.

The city outside was quiet.

Too quiet.

Mara stared at the door.

Another click.

Then it opened.

Adrian stepped inside.

His coat was damp.

His hair was wet from the rain.

There was a shallow cut along his cheekbone.

Mara's eyes went immediately to it.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

She stared at him.

He sighed.

"Someone tried to stop me from leaving the studio."

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

She walked closer.

"Let me see."

He stood still while she touched his cheek.

Her fingers barely grazed the cut.

Adrian's eyes closed for a moment.

"You shouldn't be here."

Mara withdrew her hand.

"That's what you're going with?"

"I'm supposed to be making sure you're safe."

"You are."

"Then why did you come back?"

He looked at her.

"Because I said I would."

She waited.

He didn't say anything else.

That was Adrian.

A promise was never decoration.

If he said he would come back, he came back.

Mara looked at the cut again.

"You should clean that."

"I will."

"You won't."

"I will."

"You'll forget."

"I won't."

She gave him a look.

He almost smiled.

Almost.

Then his expression changed.

"I owe you an apology."

Mara folded her arms.

"For?"

"For deciding you should leave Chicago."

She didn't answer.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"You were."

"But I was also protecting myself."

Her arms loosened.

He stepped closer.

"I couldn't stand the thought of something happening to you."

"You thought distance would make it easier."

"Yes."

"It wouldn't have."

"I know."

Mara looked down.

"I thought you didn't trust me."

"I trust you."

"Then why did you do it?"

"Because I didn't trust myself."

She looked at him.

He continued.

"I thought if I could control the circumstances, I could control the outcome."

"You can't."

"I know."

"You finally know."

"I finally understand."

The words were quiet.

Mara looked toward the door.

"It feels strange."

"What does?"

"Being here."

"Why?"

"Because this morning I thought you were the person taking my choices away."

Adrian looked at the floor.

"And now?"

She looked at him.

"Now I think you're the person learning how to give them back."

His eyes met hers.

Something shifted between them.

Not the old tension.

Something steadier.

Mara reached for his hand.

He took hers.

"I love you," she said.

His fingers tightened around hers.

"I love you too."

"I don't want to leave Chicago."

"I won't ask you to."

"I don't want to stop the investigation."

"I won't ask you to."

"I don't want you deciding where I sleep, who I talk to, or what risks I'm allowed to take."

"I won't."

She looked at him.

"Even if you think I'm making the wrong decision?"

"Especially then."

"That's going to be difficult for you."

"Yes."

She smiled.

"Good."

He laughed softly.

The sound surprised her.

She had heard Adrian laugh before.

Rarely.

Never like this.

Mara stepped closer.

He lifted his hand to her face.

He stopped before touching her.

"Can I?"

Her smile faded into something softer.

"Yes."

His palm settled against her cheek.

Warm.

Careful.

Nothing possessive.

Nothing demanding.

Just a question answered.

Mara leaned into his hand.

"That's new."

"What?"

"You asked."

"I promised."

She closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them, he was still watching her.

"Then I have something to ask you."

"What?"

"Stay."

His expression changed.

"Here?"

"With me."

He looked toward the sofa.

"Lena?"

"Asleep."

"Marcus?"

"Not here."

Adrian looked back at her.

"Mara."

"I'm not asking you to protect me."

"I know."

"I'm asking you to stay because I want you here."

He searched her face.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Then I'll stay."

She smiled.

He leaned down.

Their kiss was slow.

No panic.

No urgency.

No fear disguised as desire.

Just the quiet certainty of choosing each other.

When they separated, Mara rested her forehead against his chest.

His arms came around her.

She listened to his breathing.

Steady.

Human.

Not invincible.

She understood something then.

She didn't need Adrian to be incapable of failing.

She needed him to be willing to stand beside her when he did.

A knock sounded.

They separated.

Marcus entered after Adrian opened the door.

His expression was serious.

"We found something."

Mara straightened.

"What?"

Marcus held up a tablet.

"The contractor's communications."

Adrian took it.

Marcus continued.

"Price wasn't working for Voss alone."

Mara stepped closer.

"Who else?"

"Someone inside the security operation."

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Name."

"Not yet."

Mara frowned.

"What do you have?"

"Access logs. Payment records. A meeting schedule."

He swiped.

A list appeared.

Mara recognized several names.

One belonged to a senior security administrator.

Another belonged to a contractor she'd never heard of.

Then she saw the third.

She froze.

"That's impossible."

Adrian looked at her.

"Who?"

She pointed.

"My father's attorney."

Marcus frowned.

"He's dead."

Mara shook her head.

"He died four years ago."

Adrian looked at the date.

The access had happened three weeks ago.

"Then someone is using his credentials."

Mara stared.

"How?"

Marcus looked at Adrian.

"That's what we're trying to find out."

A message appeared on the tablet.

A new transmission.

Marcus opened it.

One sentence.

You have the ledger. You just don't know where you're keeping it.

Mara went still.

"That's impossible."

Adrian looked at her.

"What?"

"The photograph."

She grabbed it from the counter.

She turned it over.

Her father's handwriting.

Some things are safer where nobody thinks to look.

Then she remembered something.

The frame.

She had focused on the photograph.

Not what held it.

"The frame."

Adrian understood.

"What about it?"

"My mother still has it."

Marcus looked at the time.

"We can get it."

Mara shook her head.

"No."

Adrian frowned.

"Why?"

"If they know we're looking for the ledger, they may know about my mother."

His expression hardened.

"We're not going there."

Mara's eyes narrowed.

"You just promised."

"I promised not to make decisions for you."

"Then ask."

He stopped.

Mara waited.

"Do you want to go?"

"Yes."

"Do you understand the risk?"

"Yes."

"Do you want me beside you?"

She smiled faintly.

"Yes."

Adrian nodded.

"Then we go together."

Marcus looked at them.

"There's one problem."

"What?"

"We can't use any of our normal routes."

Adrian nodded.

"We won't."

Marcus left to prepare the vehicles.

Mara turned toward Adrian.

"You really are learning."

"I'm trying."

She reached for his hand.

"I can tell."

He squeezed her fingers.

Then they walked toward the apartment door.

Adrian stopped.

For a second, Mara expected him to check the lock.

Instead, he opened the door.

He looked at her.

"Ready?"

She nodded.

They stepped into the hallway.

Adrian didn't lock the door.

Mara noticed.

She looked back.

The apartment stood open behind them.

The first time he'd left a door unlocked since she'd met him.

Not because security no longer mattered.

Not because danger had disappeared.

Because he trusted her enough to leave the choice visible.

Mara smiled.

Adrian noticed.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You smiled."

"I know."

He waited.

She stepped closer.

"You left it open."

His gaze moved to the doorway.

Then back to her.

"I did."

They walked away together.

Behind them, the door remained open.

For once, protection did not sound like a lock turning.

It sounded like a choice.
