CHAPTER 23

THE TRUTH GOES LIVE

By nine the next morning, Mara had stopped thinking about whether they were ready.

Ready had become meaningless.

There was only now.

The recovered recording sat on three encrypted drives.

The notebook from Daniel Price's safe was sealed in an evidence pouch.

The photograph of her father was tucked inside Mara's coat.

And the story was scheduled to go live at ten.

Not a teaser.

Not another carefully worded episode.

Everything.

The companies.

The transfers.

The manufactured scandal.

The names.

The evidence.

Lena stood behind the control desk, staring at the screens.

"Once this goes live, there's no taking it back."

Mara adjusted her headphones.

"Good."

Lena gave her a look.

"You're terrifying today."

"I'm tired."

"Same thing."

Mara smiled.

Across the studio, Adrian stood beside the door.

He wasn't wearing the dark tailored suit she had first seen him in.

Just a black sweater beneath a wool coat, his sleeves pushed slightly up his forearms.

He looked less like a security specialist.

More like the man she had kissed in the quiet hours of the morning.

But his eyes were working.

Camera.

Door.

Hallway.

Windows.

People.

Every movement.

Every exit.

Mara watched him for a moment.

He noticed.

"What?"

"You've checked that door six times."

"Five."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Five."

"You're counting now?"

"Always."

He walked toward her.

"How are you feeling?"

She considered the question.

"Scared."

He nodded.

"Good."

She frowned.

"Good?"

"Means you're paying attention."

She smiled.

"You've changed."

"How?"

"You used to tell me not to be scared."

"I was wrong."

He reached for her hand.

"Fear tells you to look. It doesn't get to decide for you."

She squeezed his fingers.

"That's better."

His phone vibrated.

Marcus.

Adrian answered.

"Report."

Mara watched him listen.

His expression became serious.

"How many?"

A pause.

"Keep them outside."

Another pause.

"No. Don't move Mara."

He ended the call.

She looked at him.

"What?"

"News crews are outside."

"That's normal."

"One vehicle isn't."

Her smile disappeared.

"Voss?"

"We don't know."

Marcus entered the studio.

"There's a black sedan parked across the street. Same vehicle seen near Price's office."

Adrian nodded.

"How long?"

"Twenty minutes."

Mara looked at the clock.

Nine forty-five.

"Then they're waiting."

"Maybe."

She looked at Adrian.

He gave her a small nod.

Not a command.

A reminder.

She had a choice.

Mara turned toward Lena.

"Start the countdown."

Lena pressed a key.

The screen changed.

15:00

Fifteen minutes.

Mara sat at the microphone.

The red light above the booth remained off.

Adrian stood behind the glass.

His arms crossed.

Mara could see him watching the hallway.

She lifted her microphone.

"Today's episode is different."

Lena looked through the glass.

Mara continued.

"For years, one financial scandal has been treated as a closed case. A disgraced executive. A company collapse. A convenient villain."

She looked at the photograph beside her.

"My father."

Her voice remained steady.

"My father was Edward Ellison."

Adrian's gaze shifted toward her.

She continued.

"He was accused of moving money through a network of shell companies. The accusation destroyed his career and fractured my family."

She paused.

"New evidence suggests he refused to participate."

Lena pressed the recording.

Her father's voice filled the studio.

The money was never mine.

Mara's fingers tightened around the microphone.

The recording continued.

They needed someone to blame.

Then silence.

Lena stopped the audio.

Mara looked into the camera.

"That evidence was hidden for years."

Outside the studio, a car door slammed.

Adrian immediately turned.

Marcus moved toward him.

Mara kept speaking.

"The records we recovered show transfers between companies controlled by Graham Voss and several entities connected to Ellison Financial."

Lena's hands moved across the console.

Documents appeared on the screen behind them.

Dates.

Amounts.

Company names.

A pattern.

The pattern Mara had spent months chasing.

Her father's name appeared at the center.

Then another name.

Daniel Price.

Mara's voice tightened.

"Price worked inside Ellison Financial during the period these transfers occurred."

A document appeared.

"Later, he became a security contractor with access to private security information connected to this investigation."

Marcus looked toward Adrian.

Adrian's phone rang.

He answered.

"Yes."

Mara couldn't hear the other voice.

His expression changed.

He looked at the studio windows.

Then at Mara.

She knew that look.

Something was happening.

She removed one headphone.

"What?"

Adrian shook his head.

"Keep going."

She looked at him.

"Are you sure?"

He nodded.

"Keep going."

She put the headphone back on.

The countdown reached zero.

Lena hit the button.

The broadcast went live.

For a second, nothing happened.

Then the listener count began climbing.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

The story was out.

Mara continued.

"We have submitted copies of the evidence to independent journalists and law enforcement."

Her voice remained calm.

"Nobody gets to bury this again."

Outside, a car accelerated.

Adrian moved toward the hallway.

Marcus followed.

Mara kept speaking.

"Because this isn't only about my father."

She looked directly into the camera.

"It's about the people who were threatened into silence."

She played Naomi's recording.

Naomi's voice filled the studio.

They know about the ledger.

Mara closed her eyes for half a second.

Then opened them.

A notification flashed across Lena's monitor.

DOCUMENT MIRROR DETECTED.

Lena looked at Mara.

"The files are spreading."

Mara smiled.

"Good."

Then the studio door rattled.

Everyone went still.

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

"Stay inside."

Mara looked at him.

He caught himself.

"Please stay inside."

She smiled faintly.

"Better."

He nodded.

A second later, Marcus spoke into his radio.

"Movement at the east entrance."

Adrian's expression hardened.

Mara continued the broadcast.

"Someone is going to try to tell you this evidence is fabricated."

She looked at the camera.

"They may say my father was guilty."

A pause.

"They may say I am unstable."

Another pause.

"They may say this investigation is politically motivated, financially motivated, personally motivated."

Her fingers tightened around the desk.

"Maybe they will say all three."

She leaned toward the microphone.

"None of that changes the documents."

Lena looked toward the glass.

"Police are here."

Mara stopped.

"What?"

"Two patrol cars."

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus checked his phone.

"They were called by one of the journalists."

Mara exhaled.

For the first time that morning, the room felt slightly less enclosed.

Then Adrian's phone buzzed.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Mara stood.

"Adrian?"

He walked toward her.

"Voss is gone."

"Where?"

"His office is empty."

"Did he run?"

"Maybe."

Mara stared at him.

"What else?"

Adrian hesitated.

"There was a message."

"What message?"

He showed her.

A single sentence.

You should have asked your father what he was protecting.

Mara's face went cold.

She thought about the photograph.

The old house.

The second ledger.

The line in the notebook.

Then she understood.

"My mother."

Adrian looked at her.

"What?"

"He wasn't protecting the ledger."

Mara grabbed her coat.

"He was protecting my mother."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Call her."

Mara dialed.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Her chest tightened.

Adrian took her hand.

"Stay with me."

This time she didn't resist.

She looked at the live broadcast screen.

The listener count kept rising.

The truth was spreading.

But somewhere outside the studio, Graham Voss had disappeared.

And Mara's mother had stopped answering her phone.

Adrian looked toward Marcus.

"We move now."

Mara picked up the photograph.

"No."

Adrian looked at her.

"We're not running."

She held his gaze.

"We're going to find my mother."

He nodded.

"Together."

Behind them, the broadcast continued.

Her father's voice played again.

The evidence was already everywhere.

There was no going back.

Mara took Adrian's hand.

They walked toward the door.

This time, he didn't step in front of her.

He walked beside her.

And when they left the studio, neither of them looked back.
