Chapter Forty One

Ω Blakely Ω

When I open my eyes, I’m met with bright lights and a headache. Did I hit my head? I’m not dead, am I? There’s no way I died.

The beeping of the machine beside me grabs my attention. I turn to look at it, and I see my heartbeat. Well… I’m not dead. Where am I? The last thing I remember was hiding in the bathroom when the house caught on fire.

Smoke. It got hot. Nothing after that. I don’t even know how the fire started. I blink a few times before looking around. Where is everyone? There’s no way that Bronx or my dad would’ve left me alone.

“Princess?” My dad’s voice is soft, like he doesn’t know if I’m awake or not.

I turn to look at him and frown when I see how exhausted he looks. He looks stressed out. “Daddy?” I reach my hand to him, and he takes it. “Are you okay?”

My dad cracks a small smile. “I should be asking you that, baby girl. I feel better knowing that you’re awake. It's like a weight lifted off my shoulders. How are you feeling?”

“I feel like I have a headache. What happened? I only remember being in the bathroom. The house was on fire. I tried to call for help… Where’s Kal-El?” It was just me in the house with our cat.

My dad chuckles and sits beside my legs.

“Your cat is safe. He’s with Charlotte and Alexander.

He stayed right beside you the entire time.

We got the call that the house was on fire…

I thought you were still at the event…” He doesn’t look at me.

“I didn’t know you were in the house. I would’ve gone in after you.

Miller felt it in his gut that you were in there, and he was right. ”

My dad motions to the small couch in the room. Bronx is slumped over sleeping. He has a bandage on part of his neck and down both of his arms. I’m sure there’s more underneath his clothing.

Randomly he’ll twitch before wincing in pain. He moves a lot in his sleep, so I’m now going to be worried about how much pain he’s going to be in.

“He ran into a burning building for you. In a turnout coat and nothing else. Bronx is the one that found you… He carried you out and put the coat on you. I had no idea he had it in him. He responded faster than most of the firefighters. I didn’t know he loved you that much.”

I laugh. “I knew he loved me that much. The only reason why he reacted as fast as he did is because I was in the house.”

My dad cracks a smile at me. “I’d like him more if he’d take our last name instead of you changing yours.”

I tilt my head slightly. “Do you think he’s going to marry me?” Has he asked my dad already? I know we’ve talked about it before.

“I think anyone who's willing to run into a burning building for you is worthy of my daughter.”

I smile brightly up at him. “I think I could talk him into taking my last name.”

I don’t know if it’ll work, but it’s definitely worth a conversation. My dad laughs loudly, but quickly quiets himself down. He looks at Bronx before looking back at me. “If he takes our last name, I’d like him a lot more.”

I giggle. I knew that’s what would get him to like Bronx. “If I knew that's all that would take you to like me, I would’ve offered to change my name ages ago. It would’ve been so easy to get you to like me.”

I smile and look over at Bronx.

“It's always been my plan to take her last name…” Bronx groans when he gets up. He must’ve gotten really hurt in the house.

“I just have some burns. Nothing bad. I just need rest. I’m not going to die or anything.

I’ll be completely fine in a few weeks. I would do that again a million times over if it meant I saved you.

I was worried about you…” Bronx leans down and kisses my lips. “I love you.”

“I love you… Thank you for saving my life,” I tell him.

“I’m going to ask when you two are going to be discharged,” my dad tells us before he walks out of the room. Bronx quickly sits down and practically sighs in relief.

“How much pain are you in? And be honest.”

Bronx smiles at me. “I only hurt bad when I move. So, sitting right here doesn’t make me hurt, and that’s the truth,” Bronx promises me.

I frown. “I don’t know what happened. I was in the bathroom, and then I smelt smoke.” I just remember sitting down to wait to see what the pregnancy test said.

“You and Kal-El were curled up in the bathroom together when I found you. I made sure to grab him, too. He wasn’t too pleased when I had to have Charlotte come and get him.” Bronx takes my hand and kisses it.

He seems exhausted. I open my arms out to him. He moves slowly to come and lay beside me.

“I’m okay…” I tell him.

“I know…” I can barely hear him.

“Do you want to sleep more before we go ho-” Oh, we don't have a home right now.

Bronx chuckles. “Your dad said we could stay with him for a bit. I think he forgot you still had a house still.”

“A house that has nothing in it,” I remind him.

I took everything when I moved in with him. Don’t regret that for a second.

My dad walks into the room. A nurse comes in behind him with a wheelchair. “You guys can go home now. They feel better knowing there’s paramedics in the house.”
