Chapter Forty Two

Ω Bronx Ω

(Two Months Later)

I’m still not supposed to be doing too much lifting, so a couple guys from the station came over to our new house to help get everything together. They went to get lunch, so I’m stuck here with Chief Knight. Blakely made us lunch before she went to a meeting at her business.

“Ask me the question,” Chief Knight tells me.

I shake my head. “What?”

Chief Knight places his arms on the table and looks at me. “You obviously love my daughter.”

“There’s nothing I love more in this world.”

“Ask me what you need to ask me, then.”

My face feels hot. I don’t like being put on the spot like this. “Chief Knight…” I swallow thickly.

If he tells me no, I don’t know what else he wants from me. It’s been the only thing holding me back from proposing to Blakely. She would be upset if she found out her dad didn’t give his blessing. She knows she doesn’t need it. She wants it, though.

“Yes?”

I pull out the ring I have in my pocket. It’s been haunting me ever since I bought it months ago. I open the ring box and slide it over to him.

“I love your daughter more than life itself. I want to be with her for the rest of my life. My whole goal in life is to make her happy… Show her everyday that she’s the best thing to ever happen to me…

To make her feel like the most important person in the entire world.

I hope I’ve proven to you that I would stop at nothing to protect her.

It would mean a lot, not just me, but her as well, if you give me your blessing to marry her,” I tell him.

I feel nervous. He’s staring at me like he doesn’t know if he wants to kill me or not. After what feels like hours, Chief Knight clears his throat.

“I hated you because I knew your type. Heck. I was just like you when I was your age. But you showed me little by little that you are, frankly, obsessed with my daughter… You ran into a burning building for her… So, Bronx. Yes. I give you my blessing to marry my daughter.” Chief Knight cracks the smallest smile at me.

I’ve only ever seen his full smile shown to Blakely. I get up quickly and head to the door. “Where are you going?” Chief Knight asks me.

I turn back to look at him. “I finally asked you if you were okay with me marrying Blakely… I’m not wasting another second not being engaged to her.”

I grab my keys and leave without another word. I know where I’m going to do it. I just need some help. I call Alexander.

“Hey, bud,” Alexander answers me.

“Hey. I need your help with something. It’s important.”

“Tell me what you need.”

I knew he was going to be the right person to call.
