THREE
David
“Pssst. Pssst!”
I keep my head down and pretend not to hear the love of my life hissing at one of my teammates. Whatever they’re up to is guaranteed to give me a migraine, and I’d rather delay that for the time being. Sometimes, it’s better not to know.
“I have to go,” Alistair declares, standing abruptly. “I’m needed to… uh… yeah.”
He’s not normally that bad at making excuses, and alarms go off in my brain. I lift my head, and Caolan ducks back into the hall. I let him go—for now—and pin Alistair with my best don’t-fuck-with-me stare.
“Where are you going?”
He freezes, but interestingly, so does everyone else in the room. Are they all in on this? Even Gideon?
No. That’s not possible.
“It’s important,” Alistair says earnestly.
“That’s not what I asked.” I narrow my eyes as his face contorts in an agony of indecision. Seriously, what’s going on? Alistair’s usually good at talking himself out of trouble. “Are you doing something that people are going to complain about?”
His expression clears, and he gives me a sunny smile. “Nope!”
That seems too easy. “Are you sure?”
His nod is emphatic. “I’m not going to lie to you about this, David. Everyone’s super excited. Trust me, it’s going to be epic.”
“Don’t you need to go?” Elinor interrupts. “Right now.”
Before I can weasel more information out of him, Alistair shouts, “Byeeee!” and races out. I turn my gaze on Elinor, but she just smiles innocently and goes back to work.
Never mind. I’ll find out what’s going on… eventually.
