FIVE

Sam

I point accusingly at my best friend. “You said this would be easy. You said it wouldn’t be complicated. And now we have to have a slumber party!”

Alistair shrugs. “It’s not complicated at all. And what do you mean, have to ? You’re looking at this the wrong way, Sammy. We get to have a slumber party!”

I fold my arms and scowl at him. “I’m sensing way too much excitement from you.

This was supposed to be a simple plan to give David a birthday he’d love, and now I’m somehow lying to the man who makes my job easier.

Do you understand how bad that is? What if he gets mad and stops helping?

” I give him a second to think about it.

He waves dismissively. “Pfft. David would never do that. And even if he did, you’d still have me!”

My eyes narrow. “You don’t make my job easier, Alistair. If David made me choose between him and you, it would be no contest.” That’s not true. Alistair’s my best friend, even when I want to stab him with a pencil. And David would never make me choose.

But hearing Alistair’s shocked gasp makes me feel better about having to say, “Fine. Let’s have a slumber party.”
