“I’ve never been to a slumber party before. This is exciting!” I continue packing my overnight bag, avoiding David’s gaze. I am very excited about the slumber party, but also I’m relieved that I won’t have to spend the night trying to keep secrets from David.
“A slumber party with Alistair is the worst kind of torture,” he murmurs, watching with a bemused look as I add a wig and a shiny satin vest to my bag. “What are those for?”
“It’s a party planned by Alistair. I want to be prepared.” The only things I know about slumber parties are what I learned from TV shows and books, but Alistair’s my bro, and I know for sure that he’s got something fun planned.
“About that… this party seems kind of last-minute.”
Sweat breaks out on my spine. He’s suspicious.
“Is this what you and Alistair were plotting today? When he tried to sneak out of the office and lied to my face?”
Oh no! He’s giving me the perfect excuse, but if I take it, I’ll be lying to him. And the whole reason for this slumber party was so I wouldn’t have to lie.
“Bro code!” I shout. “I can’t talk about it.”
David shakes his head and comes over to kiss me. “I love you. Just promise that whatever you’re plotting isn’t going to make me nuts.”
I kiss him back. “Never.” He’s going to love it.
