NINE
David
I don’t know what I’ve done in my life to make my friends and colleagues think I’m stupid, but there must have been something. Why else would they think I have no idea what they’re planning?
Even Caolan, the love of my life, the other half of me, the only person I want to spend this life and all my others with…
even he thinks I’m still in the dark. As though all the whispers, sneaking around, and secret meetings have gone completely unnoticed.
I mean, Alistair’s slumber party idea was clever, but there’s no way in hell Noah and Andrew would have voluntarily gone to something like that if there weren’t shenanigans afoot.
To test my theory, I casually ask the office, “So, any exciting plans this weekend?”
There’s a flurry of startled jumps and exclamations that isn’t normal. Most of these people are highly trained. Noah lived for a year in an enemy bunker and nobody knew. A simple question shouldn’t have caused that reaction.
Good actors, they definitely are not.
“Plans? This weekend? No. Why would you think that?” Elinor asks, her voice rising at the end.
I shrug. “No reason. Just wondering. I thought I might surprise Caolan with a weekend in Vegas. He hasn’t been yet.
” It’s been years since the elves and dragons came to Earth, and Caolan and I have taken several international vacations, but there are some places close to home that we haven’t gotten to.
“No!” The shout comes from several mouths.
“Caolan won’t like Vegas,” Alistair races to add. “Too many… free buffets.”
Uh-huh.
