CHAPTER 28
Clara
◆
Four hours after asking Julian what stopping would mean, Clara returned to his study at nine because she had decided to.
The distinction had occupied the hours since he left the kitchen.
At noon, Thomas had signed the temporary administrative leave.
The covering priest held the parish master keys and duties; Thomas held the collar and the signed document.
Julian had answered no parish call, given no blessing, entered no church room, and performed no ministry.
When the office phone rang through the wall after dinner, he had let someone else answer it.
Ward had called at eight-thirty with the last practical choice.
A protected room and controlled car could be ready in twenty minutes.
Clara’s police access, evidence updates, and legal support would move with her.
Staying at the rectory purchased none of those things, and leaving would forfeit none.
The watch remained stable, and Julian’s leave had changed neither Ward’s custody nor Clara’s exit.
Clara had chosen to stay.
Her clean clothes and toiletries were packed in the guest room if she changed that choice. The empty silver case and signet ring were secured there with her other belongings, available to her and absent from this room. The family objects stayed there; her consent would speak for itself.
Now the brass guest-and-garden key rested in her jeans pocket.
The secure phone filled her right hand without strain.
The study door stood open, and the corridor behind her led without obstruction to her room, the stairs, and the garden route.
Julian waited by the desk in an ordinary dark shirt and black trousers.
His throat was bare. No missing collar had been arranged for effect.
The old radiator hissed once and settled quiet.
“The leave is effective,” Clara said.
“Since noon.”
“Keys and duties?”
“Transferred. I have no duplicate.”
“Did Thomas log the permanent-departure request?”
“Filed for transmission and review. It is in process, not granted. I remain bound by my obligations unless and until the Church completes it.”
“If I leave tonight?”
“The request remains mine. It purchases nothing from you.”
“You did no ministry after the signatures.”
“None.”
“Ward can move me tonight.”
“Yes.” Julian kept both hands visible at his sides. “You can call from here or anywhere else. I will not interfere.”
She set the phone on the corner of his desk, screen up and within reach. “The door stays unlocked.”
“It stays as you choose.”
Clara pushed it wider until the latch rested against the wall. “Open.”
His attention moved to the clear corridor and returned to her. He stayed by the desk.
She had eaten dinner, swallowed nothing stronger than water and acetaminophen hours earlier, and felt clear down to the small scar in her right palm. The concussion was gone. Her scalp had healed. Her left ribs held a mild reminder when she twisted too quickly, not a command to live untouched.
His answer at five had been immediate. “I stop immediately. Nothing before it becomes a debt. If you leave, you keep your safety, housing choice, case support, and my respect.”
“And if I change my mind in the middle?”
“The same answer.”
Earlier, he had given her the same space. Clara had left the study to eat, call Ward, review the alternate room, and discover whether desire survived four hours in which nobody hurried it. Now she stood in front of him with the answer tested against every practical exit.
Clara left the phone lit within reach. Julian stayed where she had placed him, bare-throated and waiting.
Clara crossed the room.
Julian’s breath deepened, but he waited until she reached him. She touched the front of his shirt, felt the steady heat beneath the cloth, and looked up into his gray eyes.
“I want you,” she said. “Not because you left. Not because you hid me. Not because either of us has suffered enough to earn this.”
“Clara.”
“Yes or no?”
“Yes. I want you.”
She kissed him.
The first contact was not cautious. She had spent too many nights measuring doors and titles to pretend uncertainty about his mouth.
Julian received the pressure without taking over, one hand open beside her waist and the other resting at his side.
When she caught his lower lip between hers, a rough sound left him.
She felt that sound through his chest. It answered the part of her that had wondered whether his composure would survive being wanted instead of needed.
Julian’s restraint did not vanish. It became visible in the careful space his body kept from her injured side, in the hand that waited rather than closing, in every breath he allowed her to interrupt.
“Touch me,” she said.
His palm settled at her right hip, nowhere near the tender left ribs. “Here?”
“Closer.”
She guided his other hand to the back of her neck, below the healed scalp wound.
His fingers closed with controlled pressure, holding rather than steering.
The kiss deepened. Julian tasted of coffee and the mint he had taken after dinner.
Nothing ceremonial, nothing borrowed from an office he no longer held.
Just a man whose restraint changed shape when she gave it somewhere to go.
Clara opened the first button of his shirt, then the second. He waited for her tug before freeing the cloth from his trousers.
“Take it off,” she said.
He did, laying the shirt across the desk chair rather than dropping it into her path. His body was leaner than his clothes admitted, broad through the shoulders, marked by time rather than display. A pale scar ran for two inches beneath his left ribs.
Clara traced the air above it. “May I?”
“Yes.”
She touched the line with two fingertips. It was old and smooth, without heat or tenderness. Julian watched her hand.
“The Mercer case,” she said.
“The glass from the ambush.”
“I am not here to heal that woman for you. I am not absolving what you think you failed to prevent.”
“I know.”
“I am touching you because I want to know your body.”
Something unguarded crossed his face. “Then know it.”
Clara flattened her palm against his chest and kissed him again. This time his mouth answered with more force, still following the angle she chose. His hand tightened at her hip. The control in it was exact enough to make her nipples hard beneath her sweater.
Julian broke the kiss by an inch. “May I touch you under this?”
“Yes.” She took his wrist and slid his hand beneath the sweater. “Start here.”
His palm crossed her stomach, warm and slow, then cupped her right breast through the thin bra. Clara leaned into him. His thumb found her nipple and circled once.
“More pressure.”
He obeyed. Pleasure moved cleanly through her, sharpened by the way his strength obeyed her instruction. She kissed the corner of his mouth, then stepped back and pulled the sweater over her head. The movement tugged faintly at her left side. She adjusted her elbow and finished without pain.
Julian waited for her to remove the bra herself. His gaze traveled over the faded last trace of bruising beneath her left ribs and the breasts she had chosen to show him. He looked hungry without making hunger her responsibility.
“Beautiful,” he said.
The word landed because it did not ask her to deny the marks.
Clara opened his trousers. His cock was hard beneath the dark fabric, and the sight gave twelve years of restraint a blunt physical fact. She wrapped her hand around him through his underwear, felt his body tense, and smiled against his mouth.
“You can breathe.”
“I am considering it.”
“Take your time. I intend to make it difficult.”
His dry laugh ended when she stroked him once. Then he caught himself, not her.
“Tell me what you want first,” he said.
Clara took off her boots and jeans, keeping the phone visible on the desk.
Julian undressed without performance, stepping out of his trousers and underwear and moving both away from the door.
They stood naked in the warm study, two adults without any cloth or office left to speak for them.
Leave had removed his authority over her; it had not released him from celibacy.
That breach was his to name and bear, and she would not help him pretend it was absent.
She took a sealed condom from the pocket of her folded jeans and placed it beside the phone.
“Prepared,” Julian said.
“I had four hours and access to an ordinary pharmacy order. Celibacy did not erase logistics.”
“I would not have presumed.”
“That is why I did.”
She kissed him once more, then put a hand against his chest. “I want your mouth on me.”
His eyes held hers. “Yes.”
Clara chose the narrow sofa and lay on her back with her left side free of the armrest. Julian brought the loose cushion only after she pointed to it, placing it beneath her knees. He knelt at the edge of the sofa and waited until she opened her thighs.
His first kiss landed on the inside of her right knee. The next moved higher. By the time his mouth reached her pussy, anticipation had turned every inch of skin alert.
He opened her with his thumbs and looked up once, waiting. Clara held his gaze and widened her thighs. Only then did he lower his mouth. The first touch of his tongue was exploratory rather than timid, a long stroke that made her feel exactly how exposed she had chosen to be.
Julian licked slowly along her opening, then found her clit with the flat of his tongue. Clara’s hips lifted before she chose to move them. He followed without pinning her.
“Again,” she said.
He repeated the stroke.
“Slower at the top.”
His tongue slowed exactly where she asked. The precision made her breath break. She put her right hand in his hair, not to force him, only to keep contact while his mouth learned her. He watched her face from between her thighs and changed nothing until she told him.
“More pressure now.”
