CHAPTER 28 #2

Julian pressed his tongue harder against her clit and held it there before resuming the slow rhythm.

Clara’s knees tightened near his shoulders.

He kept her thighs exactly where she had set them and treated no reaction as new permission.

His patience made the pleasure feel less like surrender than authorship written through another person’s mouth.

“Use your fingers.”

“Inside?”

“Yes. One first.”

He slid one finger into her while his tongue returned to her clit. The stretch was easy, the rhythm patient. Clara tightened around him and directed his hand with small movements of her hips.

His free hand stayed open on her right thigh. Clara covered it and pushed it higher until his palm cupped the curve of her hip. The hand closed then, firm enough to anchor and not enough to hold her down. She could move away. Instead she moved against his mouth.

“Curl it. There.”

He found the pressure. She let her head fall back against the sofa, no longer interested in wit. Pleasure gathered low and hard, built by each exact repetition. When he added a second finger, he asked with his eyes and waited for her nod.

“Do not stop,” she said.

His mouth stayed steady while his fingers moved inside her, and the combination drove her past the point where control meant silence.

Clara came with his name in her mouth and her right hand tightening in his hair.

The orgasm rolled through her in deep pulses.

Julian slowed only when her thighs loosened, then withdrew his fingers and kissed the inside of her leg.

He waited on his knees until she opened her eyes.

“Stay with me, Clara,” he said. “Tell me what you need.”

“Very much.” Her voice sounded wrecked enough to please her. “Come here.”

He rose. Clara sat up carefully and drew him between her knees. His cock pressed hot against her stomach. She stroked him with her right hand, testing the old palm and finding no weakness.

Julian’s head lowered. His eyes closed for one stroke, then opened again. “You owe me nothing here. Not touch, not comfort, not proof.”

“I know. That is becoming one of your more attractive sentences.”

She kissed him and tasted herself on his mouth. The intimacy of it went deeper than shock. She had chosen every step and could still see the open door past his shoulder.

Clara reached for the condom. “Do you want to be inside me?”

“Yes.” The word came rough and immediate. He steadied it with the next breath. “If you still want that.”

“I do.”

She opened the packet and rolled the condom onto him herself. Julian watched her hands, then helped only when she shifted his wrist into place. No fertility promise hid inside the act. It was contraception and care made ordinary.

The rug beside the sofa gave them more room. Clara lay back with the cushion beneath her head and both feet planted. Julian knelt between her thighs, braced on his forearms so none of his weight rested on her ribs.

“Slow,” she said. “Let me set the angle.”

He guided his cock to her opening and stopped.

“Yes,” Clara said.

He entered by degrees. The fullness pulled a sound from both of them, separate and imperfect. Julian paused halfway, his entire body held under visible control.

Clara watched the effort move through his arms and shoulders.

His inexperience with her body showed only in the questions he did not pretend to have answered.

His desire showed everywhere else: the flush across his chest, the pulse at his throat, the way his hips wanted the distance gone while he waited for her to decide.

“More,” she said.

He pushed deeper until she held all of him. Twelve years had not made him violent or all-knowing. It had made his first stillness feel almost painful to witness.

Clara touched his face. “Move.”

His first strokes were slow. She adjusted beneath him, showing him with her hips where pressure turned from simple fullness into pleasure. He learned quickly because he listened, not because repression had granted him magic.

The room narrowed to skin, breath, and the soft drag of the rug beneath her shoulder.

Clara kept one hand at the back of his neck and the other on his hip, feeling each stroke begin before it entered her.

Julian kissed her between movements, mouth less controlled now, and the loss of polish made her want him more.

“A little faster.”

Julian changed pace. His mouth found hers. One hand braced beside her right shoulder; the other touched her clit only after she caught his wrist and placed his fingers there.

The double rhythm began to build another climax. Clara lifted her left knee for a deeper angle and twisted too far. A mild pull caught beneath the bruised ribs.

“Stop.”

Julian stopped completely. His hand left her clit, and his body went motionless inside her.

“Pain?” he asked.

“A pull. Mild. I want my right side, with you behind me.”

He withdrew slowly and helped only where she directed. Clara rolled onto her right side, keeping the left ribs uppermost and uncompressed. The door remained in her sight. Julian lay behind her without crowding, one hand open on the rug until she took it.

“Continue,” she said. “Same condom. Slower until I say.”

He entered her again from behind, careful without turning care into hesitation. Clara guided his hand between her thighs and set two of his fingers against her clit.

“Now.”

Julian moved. The angle kept every part of his weight away from her left side and let his chest warm her back. He followed the pace she gave, then let it deepen when she pressed against him.

“Harder,” Clara said. “Not faster.”

His next thrust carried more force and no loss of control.

“Like that.”

He repeated it. His breath roughened behind her ear. The hand at her clit stayed patient, circling while his body drove pleasure through her in a different rhythm. Clara’s second orgasm came more slowly, then took her with enough force that her legs trembled against his.

Julian held the pace until she caught his wrist.

“Come,” she told him. “I want to feel you choose it.”

His forehead touched the back of her shoulder, clear of the healed scalp and ribs. Three more thrusts broke the last of his restraint. He came with a low sound and stopped deep inside her, his body shaking once before he controlled nothing at all.

They stayed joined until Clara’s breathing eased.

Then Julian withdrew, holding the condom at the base and turning away only enough to remove it safely.

He tied and disposed of it in the study bin, then washed his hands in the hall bath while Clara used the toilet and cleaned herself.

The hall was empty. The study door stood open.

When she returned, a glass of water waited on the desk beside her phone. Julian held a folded blanket rather than placing it around her without asking.

“Warm?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He wrapped it around her shoulders after she nodded. Clara chose the sofa and tucked her feet beneath her. Her ribs gave only the familiar mild ache.

Her jeans, underwear, boots, and sweater remained where she could reach them.

The hall bath was available, the phone was lit and charged, and the path out of the study was still clear.

Julian did not close the door now that sex was finished or behave as though aftercare had changed her right to leave.

Julian crouched in front of her, still naked and suddenly less severe. “Did the pull settle?”

“It did. No new pain.”

“Anything else uncomfortable?”

“Your study rug has the sensual qualities of municipal flooring.”

His mouth moved. “I had not prepared it for seduction.”

“A terrible oversight.”

He brought her clothes from beside the sofa and offered them without deciding what she should wear.

Clara chose underwear, jeans, and the soft sweater.

Julian put on his trousers and ordinary dark shirt.

She drank half the water, then handed him the glass.

He drank from the same side without making the act symbolic.

“How are you?” he asked.

“Changed,” Clara said. “Not owned. Not healed by sex. I may be frightened tomorrow, or angry with you next week.”

She considered the rest before giving it language. “Also satisfied. Thoroughly, inconveniently satisfied.”

“I am relieved the rug did not destroy the entire result.”

“It made a serious attempt.”

“This does not forgive a failure you have not committed yet.”

“No.” He sat on the floor beside the sofa rather than crowding it. “And stopping would not have broken this.”

“I know.” She studied his face. “That is part of why I did not stop.”

Julian looked toward the open door. “I do not know what permanent life I can offer you.”

“I did not come here for a proposal.”

“Good.”

“You sound relieved.”

“I am forty-three and learning not to answer intensity with a permanent sentence.”

Clara touched his shoulder. “Love may be possible. That is all I am willing to say tonight.”

He turned his face into her palm without kissing it. “It is enough.”

The secure phone vibrated on the desk.

Clara could have left it. The case clock did not stop because her body had changed. She stood, checked that the blanket would not catch under her feet, and crossed to the screen herself.

Ward’s message contained no greeting.

Beneath it waited the headline.
