Chapter 15 #3

The fight was over.

***

Silence descended upon Sewri Warehouse Nine, broken only by the sound of falling rainwater and the low hum of the remaining halogen light.

Akhil didn't look at the unconscious men scattered across the floor. He didn't look at Reyansh.

He sprinted across the wet concrete floor towards Shruti.

Shruti was lying on her side among the scattered iron pipes, her wooden chair broken from the impact, her body bruised, but her dark eyes wide open, sparkling with raw, overwhelming relief.

Akhil dropped to his knees beside her, his hands trembling violently, a rare, heartbreaking display of emotion from a man who had just taken down an entire mercenary unit alone.

"Shruti!" Akhil breathed, his deep voice cracking as he pulled his boot blade and swiftly sliced through the heavy ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

The moment her hands were freed, Shruti didn't hesitate for a single second.

She threw her arms tightly around Akhil’s neck, burying her face into the warm, rain-dampened crook of his neck, her entire body shaking with deep, breathless sobs.

Akhil wrapped his broad, powerful arms around her waist, pulling her small body flush against his solid chest, holding her so tightly as if he would never, ever let her go again.

He buried his face in her dark, sweet-scented hair, his hands caressing her back, his heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

"You're safe," Akhil murmured rawly, his voice thick with tears as he stroked her dark waves. "I've got you, Shorty. I've got you. Nobody is ever going to touch you again."

Shruti held onto his torn, blood-stained shirt tightly, her fingers digging into the fabric, smelling his rich, familiar scent of sandalwood and cedar that wrapped around her like an impenetrable shield.

"You idiot," Shruti sobbed softly, a watery, breathtaking smile breaking through her tears as she looked up into his handsome, blood-marked face. "You absolute, reckless idiot! You walked in here alone!"

Akhil looked down at her beautiful, tear-glistening face.

He raised his hand, his long, warm fingers gently wiping the tear off her golden cheek, his thumb brushing over the soft skin where Reyansh had struck her.

His dark eyes burned with a love so massive, so profound, that it filled the dark warehouse with warmth.

"I will walk into hell a thousand times over, Shruti," Akhil whispered, his voice dropping to a low, velvety gravel that vibrated straight through her soul, "if it means bringing you home to me."

Shruti’s breath caught in her throat. The lingering hurt from Italy, the misunderstandings, the fear, everything vanished into the quiet air between them.

She reached up, her slender fingers gently touching the small cut above his left eyebrow, wiping away a drop of blood. "You saved my life, Akhil."

"And you saved mine," Akhil murmured softly, looking at the heavy iron pipes scattered beside them. "You reckless little journalist."

A soft, radiant chuckle escaped Shruti’s lips.

Suddenly, the heavy iron sliding doors of the warehouse were thrown wide open.

'BOOM!'

A blinding wall of high-intensity floodlights illuminated the dark cavernous space as Mark, Raghav, and dozens of armed tactical operatives and Mumbai police officers poured into the warehouse, guns held ready.

"Hands up! Police!" the tactical commander shouted.

Mark and his men stopped dead in their tracks, their jaws dropping in absolute shock as their flashlights swept across the scene.

Six broad-shouldered mercenaries were knocked out cold across the floor. Reyansh Khanna was lying unconscious near the water ledge.

And sitting in the center of the concrete floor, surrounded by broken iron pipes, was Akhil Raheja, holding Shruti Malhotra tightly in his arms, both of them completely unbothered by the police presence.

Raghav dropped his flashlight, sprinting across the floor towards his sister. "Shruti!"

Raghav dropped to his knees beside them, pulling his sister into a fierce, emotional hug. "Oh my God, Shruti! Are you okay?!"

"I'm fine, Raghav," Shruti smiled softly, hugging her brother back tightly before looking back into Akhil’s dark, unwavering eyes. "I'm fine."

Police officers moved swiftly to handcuff the unconscious Reyansh Khanna and his mercenaries, dragging them away into the waiting police vans outside.

Akhil stood up, smoothly lifting Shruti into his broad arms, cradling her close against his chest as if she weighed nothing at all. He walked out of the dark, rusted warehouse into the fresh, rain-washed Mumbai night air, carrying her towards his armored SUV.

As the cool rain brushed against their faces, Shruti rested her head against Akhil’s chest, listening to the steady, rapid rhythm of his pulse.

The dangerous storm was finally over. The corporate war was won, the enemy was defeated, and as she held onto the silver charm bracelet resting safely inside his jacket pocket, Shruti knew that no matter how reckless life became, her heart had finally found its safest home.
