Chapter 16

The morning sun broke through the heavy monsoon clouds over South Mumbai, casting warm, golden light across the city. The storm that had battered the coast for three days had finally cleared, leaving behind crisp air and a sense of profound relief.

Inside the grand press briefing hall of the Mumbai Police Headquarters, flashbulbs exploded continuously.

The Police Commissioner stood behind a podium flanked by senior officers, presenting official court documents and confiscated evidence to a packed room of national news reporters and media networks.

"Last night," the Police Commissioner announced into the wall of microphones, "a joint operation conducted by the Mumbai Police Special Cell and the Raheja Group Security Division led to the raid of Sewri Warehouse Nine.

Corporate industrialist Reyansh Khanna has been placed under arrest alongside six armed mercenaries. "

The room erupted into frantic murmurs and flashing cameras.

"We have recovered encrypted digital drives, forged financial invoices, and audio recordings," the Commissioner continued firmly.

"These documents prove beyond a doubt that Reyansh Khanna orchestrated a systematic smear campaign against Malhotra Logistics and the Raheja Group.

Furthermore, Mr. Khanna has been charged with corporate extortion, illegal wiretapping, hitman solicitation, and the aggravated kidnapping of Miss Shruti Malhotra. "

Across the city, every major television news channel broadcast the press conference live. The false financial rumors linking the Malhotra family to money laundering vanished from the news tickers.

To complete the public cleanup, a formal legal statement issued by the Raheja Group's international law firm, headed by Leonardo Bianchi, officially debunked the false engagement rumors involving socialite Sonia Kapoor.

Facing severe public humiliation and potential legal prosecution for defamation, Sonia and her father had quietly boarded a private flight to London early that morning.

The corporate war was officially over. Reyansh Khanna was facing decades behind bars, and the reputations of Akhil Raheja and the Malhotra family were restored completely.

Meanwhile, in the quiet, peaceful surroundings of the private VIP ward at Breach Candy Hospital, Shruti sat on the edge of an examination bed.

A young female doctor was finishing wrapping a soft, clean white bandage around Shruti’s right wrist, where the heavy ropes had left red friction marks the night before.

Except for minor wrist abrasions and small bruises on her arm from tipping the wooden chair, Shruti was in remarkably good health.

Sitting on a chair across the room, having his left eyebrow attended to by a senior surgeon, was Akhil.

He had refused to lie down on a hospital bed.

He sat tall and broad, his torn white dress shirt replaced by a clean black cotton t-shirt and dark trousers.

He had four neat butterfly stitches closing the small cut above his left eyebrow, and a faint bruise shadowed his sharp jawline from the brass knuckles strike.

Despite his own injuries, Akhil’s dark eyes never left Shruti’s face. He watched every movement of the doctor’s hands, his posture rigid with quiet, protective alertness.

"All done, Miss Malhotra," the doctor smiled gently, setting her medical supplies aside. "Your wrist just needs a few days of light rest. You were very lucky."

"Thank you, doctor," Shruti smiled warmly.

The doctor bowed politely and stepped out of the room, closing the door behind her, leaving them in quiet privacy.

Shruti swung her legs off the side of the examination bed and stood up. She walked slowly across the polished floor, stopping right in front of Akhil’s chair.

Akhil looked up at her. The moment she stepped into his space, his dark, fierce expression softened into an expression of pure, unadulterated tenderness.

He reached out his broad, warm hand, gently taking her bandaged wrist into his palm, his thumb lightly brushing over her fingers with infinite softness.

"Does it hurt?" Akhil asked, his deep, gravelly voice carrying a quiet edge of concern.

"Not at all," Shruti whispered, a soft, radiant smile curving her lips. She raised her free hand, her slender fingers gently touching the white butterfly stitches above his left eye. "Does yours hurt, Mr. Dictator?"

Akhil gave a faint, irresistible smirk, leaning his cheek subtly into the touch of her warm palm. "I don't even feel it, Shorty."

Shruti looked into his dark, intense eyes. In those eyes, there were no longer any secrets, no hidden motives, and no corporate burdens. There was only pure, unconditional love, a love that had survived eight long years of silence, international dangerous traps, and a harrowing warehouse rescue.

"Thank you, Akhil," Shruti murmured softly, her dark eyes sparkling with deep emotion. "For everything."

Akhil brought her hand to his lips, brushing a lingering, warm kiss over her knuckles. "You never have to thank me, Shruti. My life is yours."

Before Shruti could reply, the door of the VIP room pushed open.

Raghav, Devendra, and Kavya Malhotra walked into the room, followed by Vihaan Arora and Myra Khurana.

"Shruti!" Myra shrieked, sprinting across the room and throwing her arms around Shruti in a fierce, tearful hug. "Oh my god, babe! When Raghav called me last night about the kidnapping, I almost had a heart attack!"

"I'm fine, Myra, really!" Shruti chuckled, hugging her best friend back tightly. "Akhil handled everything."

Kavya wrapped both Shruti and Akhil in a warm, motherly embrace, tears of overwhelming relief flowing down her cheeks. "Thank God you both are safe. Thank God."

Devendra Malhotra stepped up to Akhil, his usual stern, serious executive expression replaced by deep, profound gratitude. He placed his broad hand firmly on Akhil’s shoulder, looking directly into the younger billionaire's dark eyes.

"Akhil," Devendra spoke, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "You walked into that warehouse alone without waiting for the police just to keep my daughter safe. You saved her life. The Malhotra family owes you a debt we can never repay."

"Uncle Devendra, please," Akhil replied smoothly, standing up from his chair. "You owe me nothing. Protecting Shruti is... it is the most important thing in my life."

Standing near the window, Raghav watched the interaction in total silence.

Raghav’s hands were shoved deep into his trousers pockets, his jaw set in a tight, contemplative lock. His sharp eyes moved from Akhil’s fierce, protective posture to the radiant, loving way Shruti looked at Akhil.

Raghav wasn't stupid. He had known Akhil for over fifteen years.

He had seen Akhil face cutthroat corporate rivals, international real estate moguls, and media scandals without blinking an eye.

But last night at the Malhotra house, and again at the Sewri warehouse, Raghav had seen a side of his best friend he had never witnessed before.

He had seen Akhil Raheja lose his absolute mind with terror when Shruti vanished. He had seen Akhil pull out Shruti's silver charm bracelet like a sacred treasure. He had seen Akhil walk directly into a hail of bullets without a second thought for his own survival.

A sudden, overwhelming realization began to dawn inside Raghav’s mind, a realization that made his heart beat fast.

"Dad, Mom," Raghav spoke up, his voice quiet and firm, cutting through the room's conversation. "Why don't you take Shruti home to rest? The police commissioner said he'll drop by the house later to finalize her witness statement."

"Good idea," Kavya agreed, fussing over Shruti’s cardigan. "Come, beta. Let's go home and get you some hot soup."

Shruti looked at Akhil, a subtle question in her eyes.

Akhil gave her a soft, reassuring nod. "Go home with your family, Shruti. I have a brief meeting with Mark and my legal team at the office. I'll see you this evening."

Shruti smiled, brushing her fingers against his hand one last time before following her parents, Myra, and Vihaan out of the hospital room.

As the door closed, leaving Akhil and Raghav alone in the quiet VIP room, the atmosphere instantly turned heavy with an unspoken tension.

For thirty seconds, neither man spoke.

Akhil stood near the examination bed, reaching for his dark leather jacket resting on the chair.

Raghav stood by the window, his arms folded across his broad chest, his dark eyes fixed squarely on his best friend.

"Akhil," Raghav spoke softly, breaking the silence.

Akhil paused, his hand hovering over his jacket. He turned his head to look at Raghav. "Yes, Raghav?"

Raghav walked slowly across the room, stopping three feet away from Akhil. He looked into Akhil’s dark, steady eyes, the eyes of the man who had been his brother in spirit since their university days.

"Look me in the eye, Akhil," Raghav commanded quietly, his tone serious and devoid of all humor. "And answer me one question."

Akhil straightened up to his full height, facing his best friend without a single trace of hesitation. "Ask."

Raghav took a deep, heavy breath, his chest heaving as he asked the question that had been burning in his soul since last night:

"Why did you walk into that warehouse alone?"

Akhil’s dark eyes flickered, but his posture remained solid as granite. "I told you last night, Raghav. If I had waited for a full police breach, Reyansh would have pressed the detonator or executed Shruti on video. I couldn't take that risk."

"No," Raghav shook his head, stepping closer, his voice rising slightly with intense emotion.

"Don't give me your executive security explanation, Akhil!

I know you! You are a brilliant, calculating strategist who always follows probability and tactical advantage!

But last night... last night you didn't act like a strategist. You acted like a man who didn't give a damn if he lived or died as long as Shruti was safe! "

Akhil remained silent, his jaw set in a hard, unyielding line.
