Chapter 16 #2

Raghav reached out his hand, pulling out the small silver charm bracelet from Akhil’s tactical jacket pocket on the chair. He held the brass compass and camera pendant in his palm, looking down at it, then looking back up into Akhil’s eyes.

"When you found this behind the study desk last night," Raghav whispered, his voice cracking with emotion, "you held it against your heart like it was the only thing keeping you alive. And when we were in Italy... Gia told me you refused to let any other security team guard her wing."

Raghav stepped right into Akhil’s personal space, looking dead into his dark, guarded eyes.

"How long, Akhil?" Raghav demanded, his voice thick with raw, overwhelming emotion. "How long have you loved my sister?"

The question hung in the quiet hospital room like a heavy spell.

Akhil stood completely still.

He looked at Raghav’s intense, searching face. He remembered the solemn pact they had made at twenty-five, that family came first, that trust was sacred. He remembered eight long years of carrying a silent, agonizing burden, hiding his heart to protect his best friend's trust.

The time for hiding was over.

Akhil took a slow, deep breath, his broad shoulders squaring as he looked directly into Raghav’s eyes with absolute, unyielding honesty.

"Eight years," Akhil stated, his deep voice carrying a quiet, breathtaking power.

Raghav froze completely. His jaw dropped slightly in utter shock. "What... what did you say?"

"Eight years, Raghav," Akhil repeated, his tone solid, raw, and completely unashamed. "I fell in love with Shruti on the night she turned nineteen, when she was crying in your garden gazebo after losing that college journalism competition."

Raghav stared at him in absolute, speechless disbelief. "Eight... eight years? Since she was nineteen?!"

"Yes," Akhil confessed rawly, his dark eyes burning with an intense, fierce light. "I loved her then, I loved her every single day she was traveling across the world, I loved her when she moved into my mansion, and I love her more than my own life right now."

Raghav felt as if the breath had been completely knocked out of his lungs. He stumbled back a step, resting a hand against the wall, his mind processing the staggering truth.

"Eight years..." Raghav breathed, running a hand through his hair, his mind racing through memories of the past decade. "All those years... when you rejected every heiress in Mumbai and Europe... when you built that villa on Lake Como..."

"I built Villa Raheja because she wrote an article six years ago saying Lake Como was her dream," Akhil revealed softly, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Every hotel I opened, every success I achieved... it was all because I wanted to build a world worthy of her."

Raghav looked at his best friend, his eyes wide with a mix of shock, confusion, and rising emotion. "If you loved her for eight years, Akhil... why the hell didn't you say anything?! Why did you act like a cold, distant big brother all this time?!"

Akhil let out a bitter, quiet laugh, looking down at his hands.

"Because of you, Raghav," Akhil confessed quietly, looking back up into his best friend's eyes.

"Because you are my brother. You trusted me with your family.

I was eight years older than her, living in a dark, ruthless corporate world filled with death threats and scandals.

Shruti was young, pure, and full of dreams. I swore to God that I would never break your trust. I swore that I would protect her from a distance and never take her for myself. "

Silence descended upon the hospital room, a heavy, profound silence that vibrated with the crushing weight of Akhil’s eight-year sacrifice.

Raghav stood frozen, staring at Akhil.

He saw the four butterfly stitches above Akhil's eye.

He saw the bruises on Akhil's jaw. He remembered how Akhil had suffered in silence for nearly a decade, denying himself happiness, living a lonely, disciplined life, carrying an agonizing burden of secret love, all out of loyalty to Raghav's friendship.

A sudden, overwhelming wave of emotion washed over Raghav. Tears welled up in his eyes.

Suddenly, the door of the VIP room opened softly.

Shruti stepped into the room. She had returned from the hallway after realizing she had left her handbag on the chair.

She stopped near the entrance, her dark eyes looking between Raghav’s tear-filled face and Akhil’s rigid posture. She instantly realized what conversation had just taken place.

"Raghav..." Shruti spoke softly, stepping into the room, her voice trembling slightly. "Please... don't be angry at him. If you want to blame someone, blame me. Akhil only kept silent because he respected you too much."

Raghav looked at his sister. He looked at her bandaged wrist, then looked at the fierce, protective way she instantly stood by Akhil’s side.

A sudden, quiet gasp escaped Raghav’s chest.

Then, slowly, a soft, involuntary smile broke across Raghav’s face.

A quiet chuckle escaped his lips, a chuckle that quickly built into a hearty, breathless laugh as he wiped a stray tear from his eye and shook his head in absolute disbelief.

Akhil and Shruti both blinked, looking at Raghav in complete confusion.

"Raghav?" Shruti asked cautiously. "Are you okay?"

"Am I okay?!" Raghav laughed, throwing his hands up in the air in mock exasperation. "I am surrounded by the two biggest idiots in the entire Indian subcontinent!"

Akhil raised a dark eyebrow, amused and bewildered. "Raghav..."

Raghav took two fast strides forward. But instead of throwing a punch, Raghav wrapped his broad arms tightly around Akhil, pulling his best friend into a fierce, emotional bear hug.

Akhil froze in total shock for a split second, before his broad shoulders relaxed, and he clapped his hand firmly onto Raghav’s back.

"You absolute, stubborn fool," Raghav choked out, pulling back from the hug, his hands resting heavily on Akhil’s shoulders, his eyes sparkling with deep affection and emotional laughter. "You spent eight years suffering in silence because you thought I would be angry?!"

"You made a pact about family, Raghav," Akhil reminded him quietly.

"Akhil, you ARE my family!" Raghav yelled affectionately, shaking Akhil's shoulders.

"Do you have any idea how many arrogant, selfish snobs tried to date my sister over the last five years?

! I spent half my time praying that Shruti would find a man who was brave enough, strong enough, and loyal enough to love her properly! "

Raghav turned his head to look at Shruti, his face filled with deep, brotherly pride.

"And all this time," Raghav continued, a brilliant smile lighting up his face, "the man who loved her enough to walk into a sniper trap alone... the man who built an entire villa in Italy just for her dream... was sitting right in front of me!"

Shruti felt hot, happy tears overflow her eyelashes, a radiant, breathtaking smile breaking across her face as she looked at her brother. "Raghav..."

Raghav stepped over to Shruti, pulling her into a warm hug, kissing her forehead gently before taking her small hand and placing it directly into Akhil’s broad, warm palm.

Raghav looked at both of them, his voice echoing with absolute, unwavering sincerity.

"You have my blessing, Akhil," Raghav spoke, his dark eyes shining with pure joy. "In fact, you've had my blessing for eight years. You saved my sister's life, you protected my family's honor, and you are the only man on this earth I trust with her heart."

Akhil looked down at Shruti’s hand resting securely in his palm, then looked up at his best friend. For the first time in eight long years, the heavy, suffocating weight of guilt lifted completely off Akhil’s chest.

A rare, breathtaking smile, pure, genuine, and full of unadulterated happiness, broke across Akhil Raheja’s handsome face.

"Thank you, brother," Akhil spoke, his deep voice thick with profound emotion.

"Don't thank me yet, Mr. Billionaire," Raghav teased with a mischievous wink, heading towards the door. "You still have to get through my dad’s formal interrogation tonight over dinner!"

Shruti and Akhil both laughed, a rich, beautiful sound that filled the hospital room with warmth and light.

As Raghav walked out, closing the door softly behind him, silence fell over the room once again.

Akhil turned to face Shruti fully. He stepped into her personal space, his hands gently wrapping around her waist, pulling her small frame flush against his broad chest.

Shruti reached up, her arms wrapping securely around his neck, her dark eyes looking up into his with pure, unadulterated love.

"Well, Mr. Dictator," Shruti whispered playfully, her heart beating in perfect rhythm with his. "It seems Rule Number One is officially endorsed by my brother."

Akhil chuckled, a deep, velvety sound that vibrated straight to her core. He leaned down, his dark eyes burning with an intense, possessive devotion as his lips stopped just a millimeter from hers.

"Rule Number One has evolved, Miss Malhotra," Akhil murmured against her lips, his breath warm and sweet. "From now on... you are never leaving my side."

"I wouldn't dream of it," Shruti whispered back.

And as Akhil brought his lips down onto hers in a passionate, breathtaking kiss, the dark shadows of the past officially dissolved into the golden light of a future they would build together.
