Chapter 53

FIFTY-THREE

LEVI

WHAT IS HAPPENING?

I couldn’t figure out what in the hell was happening in the kitchen.

Was this her pretending to hate me again to keep everyone from planning my disappearance? If so, she was succeeding with flying colors.

I turned off the burner. “Anyone want the last slices of bacon?”

Allie’s voice was as sharp as a switchblade. “Nobody wants fuckin’ bacon, Levi.”

The wind was knocked out of me as Clint and Will exchanged a look while Kristina gave me pity eyes. I scratched my head fairly certain this was an act? Yeah, it had to be.

Evan raised his hand. “I’ll take the bacon. And thanks for cooking.”

“Sure.” I cleared my throat. “Evan, I wanted to see if you and Rachel would like to run into town. I saw a coffee shop I thought looked interesting. Anyone else like a mountain coffee shop?”

That was when Allie stood and brought her plate to the sink, but her eyes stayed down. “I’m sure Colorado coffee blows ass. Most things in this freaking state seem to.”

With that she turned and walked out of the room.

I rinsed the pan, put it in the dishwasher, and knew I needed to locate Allie and find the answer to whatever the hell happened this morning.

Once everyone adjourned to the living room, I sprung up the stairs and to her room and turned the knob, to find it locked.

“Langley.” I whispered through the door but was met by silence. I tapped. “Allie.”

“Go away.”

While I had hopes of the door flying open and being pulled inside, it appeared things had taken a turn.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m fucking okay.”

“You just seem a little, uh, annoyed.”

“No, I’m not annoyed, ya jackass. I’m just rolling my eyes and speaking in a condescending tone because you’re so fucking wonderful.”

There had to be an explanation. Amnesia? “Well, I’m a little confused.”

I jumped as the door whipped open. “You’re confused?

” A sarcastic laugh which scared me a little flew out of her.

“Let me clear it up for you. Closure is over. And it’s such a shame for you, I’m sure.

” She whispered, “Your sneaky intention of messing around with me is done. You think you can just come in here and have sex with me all night?”

I shrugged. “Last night?”

Her nose wrinkled. “Shut up. Closure is done. You go back to your life and stay the hell away from me.”

Yes, it was definitely amnesia. I decided instantly to do the only thing that could bring her back to reality. In one swift move I had one arm around her waist and lifted her into her room while shutting the door with the other.

“You let me go—”

It was then I pulled her close and kissed her. She pushed me away but then her arms went around my shoulders, and we were back.

For three seconds.

She squirmed out of my grasp. “You get out of here right now. This whole thing is done.” She straightened her shirt. “Go get back to your life in Brazil.”

“I need to know what in the hell is going on with you.”

She pushed me towards the door. “What’s going on with me? My brain has begun to function again, that’s what’s going on. You are bad news through and through, and I want you gone.”

With another push I was in the hall and took her arms and pulled her to me. I stared into her eyes searching for the answer to whatever the fuck this was. She was squirming so I lifted her up so her feet were off the floor, and we were eye to eye.

“Tell me what’s happening.”

Her head shook. “Let me go. Leave me alone.”

“What—”

Her head shook as she whispered, “Please go.”

I put her down. “But Allie—”

“Go.”
