CHAPTER 6 #3

She begins gathering up the bubble wand and switching off the machine. She disappears into the house with one last look over her shoulder. The wink she sends me is totally unexpected, and a low chuckle escapes.

For the first time since the boys landed with me, I wished, just for a moment, that I was free and single, so that I didn’t have to wait to find out what that wink meant.

Maverick sniggers and claps my shoulder. “Come on brother. Let’s get the boys sorted so you can get back home.”

Not arguing, I follow Maverick to his house.

The quicker the boys are settled, the better.

I’ve never been so happy that Maverick insisted that, when buying everything a parent needs for a set of twins, we bought double of everything for his home.

Never a need to pack a thing for a stay at Uncle Maverick’s.

An hour later. I’m walking back into my house.

Honor’s in the kitchen, sitting on a stool at the breakfast bar, drinking a glass of wine and reading. She’s in one of her loose, flowing hippy dresses that somehow cover a lot, but are sexy as hell.

I toe my boots off and hang my cut on the coat rack by the door. My gun goes into the lock box I fitted above it. Honor’s eyes meet mine. She watches with heated eyes, as I divest myself of everything, I carry around every day.

“The boys, okay?” she asks.

“Boys are fine, baby,” I reassure her, throwing my keys into the bowl near the entryway before I stalk towards her.

Her eyes widen, and I wonder if she can read the desperation and hunger in my gaze.

From the way her eyes heat, I’d say she does.

Reaching her, I turn her towards me and step between her legs. One hand going to her back, the other into her hair. Tilting her head, I take her mouth in the kiss I’d wanted to give her earlier, but hadn’t been able to.

“Wow,” she murmurs when we break apart. “Hello, honey.”

Laughing, I bury my head in her neck, my shoulders shaking. “Fuck Honor, never change.”

She giggles, and shrugs, “What? That was a seriously, hot kiss, and if you didn’t want to talk, I’d suggest we skip dinner and go straight to the bedroom.”

I lift my head and brush a strand of blonde hair over her shoulder. Her blue eyes sparkling with laughter.

Then her stomach rumbles and she pouts.

I snigger. “Too fucking cute, baby. We’ve got time.” I press a kiss to her forehead, and step away before I forget that I need to feed her. “We’ll eat, then talk.”

Opening the insulated boxes of food from Lala’s I start plating up while Honor settles back onto her stool and picks up her wine.

“What did you do today?” she asks, as I put the plates in the microwave.

Turning, I lean back against the counter and cross my arms. “Played hooky,” I admit with a grin.

She sniggers. “Is it really playing hooky when you’re the boss?”

“Probably not,” I admit. “It was good though. A few of us went for a ride. We haven’t done that for a long time, and we’ll be parking the bikes soon with winter coming.”

Honor wrinkles her nose. “I better go shopping for clothes. Mine aren’t going to be any good for here. Maybe I can do that when I pick up my SUV.”

I look at her. That’s the second time she’s mentioned getting her vehicle.

“Where is your vehicle baby? I can send one of my crew to go and get it for you.”

She looks a little spooked by that suggestion, and I wonder why. The microwave dings, letting me know our food’s ready.

“We’re discussing whatever look that was on your face,” I point at her, circling my finger. She wrinkles her nose at me.

I let it go for now and turn to get our plates.

“Not tonight,” she says, pulling her plate closer to her. She lifts her eyes to mine. “It’s nothing bad. But it will require some time to explain, and I’d rather spend tonight with you.”

I’ll give her tonight, but we’d be having a conversation about why picking up her vehicle made her look uncomfortable.

“Eat up, darlin’. I’ve got plans for you.”

She grins at me and starts to eat. When she’s done, I pick up our plates.

“Grab your glass of wine, and wait for me in the living room, baby. We’ll have our conversation before we take this further. I need to know we’re on the same page.”

Honor slides off the stool. Her hands resting on her hips, head tilted to the side.

Spearing me with a look, a smile quivers on the edge of her lips.

“We can have whatever discussion you want. I won’t be changing my mind, Spook.

But, if it makes you feel better…” she trails off with a shrug and picks up her glass, turning towards the lounge.

She gives me one more look over her shoulder, and winks before flouncing away.

I shit you not. She flounced.

My mouth twitches and I’m hard pressed not to let out a bark of laughter.

Swear to God, I’d never actually seen anyone flounce before, but Honor did that shit with style.

This woman was going to be the death of me.

I’ve laughed and smiled more in the last week, than I have in the last ten years.

Rinsing the plates, I load the dishwasher, pick up my beer, and join the woman who has completely and irrevocably captured my heart.
