Chapter 30

Thursday rolls around in a flash.

It’s all too easy to lose time when I have nowhere to be and even easier when all my time is spent crushed under the pain of job hunting. Meeting Lucky for coffee in the morning—or more accurately, late morning because he doesn’t believe in alarms—has become the highlight of my unemployment.

“So,” Lucky says, eager, “where are you taking me on this date?”

“It’s not a date. It’s an apartment viewing.”

His brow furrows. “That was fast. I thought you had another month to look for a place.”

“I already had my eye on it.”

Lucky curls his hand around my wrist, bringing us to a stop. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, love.”

“I just want one last look,” I lie.

I can already tell he doesn’t believe me. Damn his uncanny people skills.

“No, you want to torment yourself. I get it; it’s hard to let go of something you had your heart set on, but it’ll only make it worse.”

Sounds like he’s speaking from experience.

“Come on,” he says, slipping his hand in mine. “Forget the apartment. Let’s go in there.”

He gestures to a shop across the street, and immediately, I can see why it got his attention. With its black wooden door, dusty windows, and the creeping sense that it’s of another place and time, Chance’s Curious Creations is unmissable.

It does look interesting …
