Chapter 42

An hour later, I’m sat in a room by myself, perched on a hospital bed after being given a thorough checking over.

Any cuts have been cleaned and bandaged up.

I’ve had X-rays taken of my shoulder and my ankle to check for any breaks or fractures.

I’ve provided a blood test and given a urine sample to check for any damage to my right kidney as a precaution.

The door to my room bursts opens as Sofia rushes in, her eyes wide.

“Oh my gosh! Thanks God!” She crosses the room and pulls me into her arms, her embrace so tight my already aching bones screaming in pain.

She pulls back, her eyes darting all over my face. “Are you okay? I came as soon as I heard! What happened?”

“A van ran Killian and I off the road. He’s having tests done, they think he has a concussion and possibly some broken ribs.”

“Fuck, babe.” She hops up onto the bed beside me, draping and arm around me. “I’m so glad you’re okay. What have the doctors said?”

“Nothing yet, still waiting on the results. I mean, I feel fine, just a bit bruised.”

“What were you doing with Killian?”

Before I have the chance to answer, the door opens and the nurse who took my bloods walks in.

She smiles. “Thank you for waiting, Miss Watson. The X-rays we took of your ankle and shoulder show no sign of any significant damage to the bones or connective tissue, just expect some bruising over the next week or so. If anything significant changes, please come back to us. In addition, we’ve analysed both your blood and urine samples and there’s no trace of any abnormalities so there is no sign of any internal bleeding or damage to your kidney from the impact.

However, I would like to conduct an ultrasound to ensure the health of the fetus. ”

“Th—The what?” Did I hear that right?

The nurse’s face blanches then frowns. “Were you not aware that you’re pregnant?”

Sofia stills beside me, reaching for my hand and squeezing it so tight, I know I heard the nurse correctly.

I blink a few times, staring at her wide-eyed as I try to process her words.

Health of the fetus… Pregnant…

No. No. No. No. No…

This cannot be happening.

The tiredness, the nausea, my fluctuating appetite…

Oh… My… God.

“Miss Watson?” the nurse prompts.

“Sorry. I uh… I—I didn’t know. Are you sure?”

“Both the blood and urine samples you provided show increased hCG levels indicating pregnancy. I understand this must come as a shock to you, but I’d like to take you down for an ultrasound and after that we can look at discharging you.”

My heart races, my mind still not fully grasping this is real. It’s like I’m having an out of body experience or something, like it’s not actually happening to me but to somebody else.

“Babe, you okay?” Fi asks.

I glance to her. “Will you come with me?”

Her eyes are glassy. “Of course I will.”

I stare down at the ultrasound scan in my hand, a whirlwind of emotions surging through me. “I can’t believe it…”

The scan barely shows anything, apparently the baby is the size of a pea, just a fuzzy grey blip in the middle of the photo.

“Neither can I. I’m going to an auntie!” she gushes. “Are you gonna tell him?”

“Not yet. I need to wrap my head around it first.”

“Okay, well. Whatever you decide, I’ll be right next to you, okay?”

“Thank you for staying with me through that.”

“Always, babe. Listen, I’m sorry, I really need to get to work, I’m already late as it is and my boss is being a dick lately.”

“Go, I’ll be okay.”

“I’ll see you later, babe.” She reels me in for a hug, kissing my cheek. “Love you!”

“Love you too.”

I glance down at the photo in my hand. Fi sat beside me the whole time I was having the scan, crying the second the image came up on the monitor.

Me? I couldn’t even speak. I stared at that monitor not sure whether to jump for joy or cry in fear.

Maybe both. How can I be so excited and terrified at the same time?

I’m still in a state of shock. I don’t know what to think or how to feel. Pocketing the scan photo, I push it to the back of my mind and go in search of the guys. Right now, my focus is Killian. I need to know he’s okay.

“…conducted a CT scan to check for any abnormal bleeding or swelling to his brain…”

I round the corner into the waiting area to find a tall male doctor speaking to the guys. They’re all here.

“He’s suffered a mild concussion, three broken ribs and some minor cuts and bruises. We’re going to keep him here for a few more hours to monitor him and after that we can discharge him to rest up at home.”

“Thank fuck,” Myles sighs, wrapping an arm around Allie’s shoulders.

“Thank you, Doctor,” Jett says.

“You’re welcome to go in and see him,” the doctor adds before retreating from the room.

Myles’ eyes flick to me. “What the fuck happened?”

“My car broke down on the side of the road just outside town. I called Killian and he came to give me a ride home. Out of nowhere a van tried to run us off the road. Whoever the driver was, they were persistent, they wanted to hurt us. They clipped Killian’s back tyre and he couldn’t keep control. Both of us were flung off.”

“Fuck…”

“Did you see the driver?” Cruiser asks across from me.

“No, nothing.”

“You’re sure? Did you get anything? The model of the van? A license plate?” Myles presses.

“Funnily enough I was too busy being tossed around like a rag doll to memorise them,” I reply sarcastically. “The van was dark grey and plain. I can’t give you any more than that, I’m sorry.”

Jett come up behind Myles, squeezing his shoulder. “Brother, give her a break. She could’ve easily ended up in the bed next to Kill,” he reminds him.

Myles heaves a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I’m sorry, Kaia. I just… If someone is after us again, trying to hurt my club… I can’t lose anyone else…”

“Are you alright, Kaia?” Jett asks.

I nod. “Fine, just a little bruised. I’m gonna go see Killian.”

I excuse myself and head for his room.

When I enter, he’s sitting on the edge of the bed, the tension in his body visibly lifting as soon as his eyes find me.

“Fuck, butterfly,” he rises from the bed with a wince, clutching his ribs as his feet eat up the space between us. He pulls me into his arms, cradling my head against his chest.

“Be careful! Your ribs.”

“Fuck my ribs. I just need to hold you.” He holds me so tight I’m almost certain he’s in pain, but he doesn’t seem to care.

I melt into him, thankful we’re both okay.

“I was so fucking worried. They wouldn’t tell me how you were. Are you alright?”

“Fine, just cuts and bruises. Nothing serious,” I lie, my stomach bottoming out when reality hits me all over again.

Fuck. I’m carrying his baby.

I’m glad he can’t see my face because I’m sure he’d figure out it’s definitely not just cuts and bruises.

He heaves a sigh. “Thank god. I was going out of my fucking mind.”

“Who would do this to us?” I ask.

“I have a pretty good idea.”

I pull back and judging by his expression, I know exactly what he’s thinking. It’s the same look he was wearing when he saw the text messages on my phone. “You think it was Curt Naylor?”

“No one else would want me dead. No one else would try to kill us both.”

“But why not finish the job? Why leave us alive?”

He shrugs. “To toy with me. It’s what he does. He’s like a lion playing with his prey before he goes in for the kill.”

“You need to tell the others.”

His jaw clenches as his eyes meet the floor. “No.”

“I understand why you don’t want anyone to know what he did to you, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

They’re your brothers, they’re not going to judge or shame you for it.

” I reach up to cup his cheek, guiding him to look at me.

“This isn’t just a bunch of text messages anymore. He tried to kill us. What’s next?”

He shakes his head. “They can’t know. I’ll deal with this.”

I blow out a long breath, knowing nothing I say will change his mind. “Okay,” I resign. It’s his story to tell if and when he’s ready. “I’m gonna head home, I’m exhausted. Take care of yourself, alright?”

He gives me a warm smile. “You too, butterfly. Remember, always bother me.”

I nod, backing up towards the door. My hand stills on the handle. I glance over my shoulder. “I’m glad you’re okay. I don’t know what I would’ve done if something had happened to you.”

“Nothing’s gonna happen to me, baby. You’re stuck with me.”

Little does he know, I am stuck with him. The baby growing inside me made sure that Killian and I are tied together.

Forever.
