Chapter 4 A Call After Five Years
I did not leave the Hospital until I saw the Zhou Family settle Xie Mingming into a VIP Ward.
Back at the hotel, my chest felt empty, as if I had lost the most important thing I had in an instant.
I lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling in a daze.
I did not know how long it had been.
A phone rang and jolted me out of sleep.
It was an unknown number.
I hesitated, then still hit answer.
“Where are you?”
A low male voice came through.
“Who is this?”
I asked on instinct.
A long moment later, it hit me. That voice was far too familiar.
How many nights had he pressed close to my ear and said he loved me.
“Who do you think I am. Send me your location.”
His tone left no room for argument.
I gripped the phone tighter on instinct.
“Sorry. Wrong number.”
I hung up in a panic.
My heart kept racing out of control.
After five years, why was Zhou Muyan calling me?
And how had he gotten my number?
Before I came, I had checked. Zhou Muyan was not married. He only had a girlfriend of a few years.
If the media reports were true, Xie Mingming would be his only Child.
That was why I had been so set on sending Xie Mingming back to the Zhou Family.
Following Zhou Muyan would be better than following me, no matter what.
But I was different. I was the ex who had abandoned him in his poorest year.
I did not dare get involved with Zhou Muyan again in this lifetime.
The next day, I planned to slip over to the Hospital, take one look at Xie Mingming, then go home.
I had barely gotten near the Ward when I saw Zhou Muyan in a full suit sitting by the bed, focused on peeling an apple.
He did not seem to have changed much. He still carried himself with that same force as ever.
That air of wealth coming from the inside out was not something ordinary people had.
Thinking back now, maybe I had been the only one who always thought he was a poor boy.
Beside him, before Zhou Muyan finished peeling, Xie Mingming leaned in and took a bite.
Then father and son looked at each other and smiled.
The sight made my eyes sting hard.
Maybe a result like this was already the best one.
I lowered my head and wiped away tears.
But right then, Zhou Muyan in the Ward suddenly lifted his head and looked toward where I was standing.
My heart jolted. I ducked behind the wall at once.
Luckily I was fast. Zhou Muyan did not see me.
Soon a child’s laughter rose from the Ward again.
