CHAPTER TEN
-
KAbrINA
This morning, Alexander gave me the rundown that he invited a guy to hang out with him at the house today. He gave me strict instructions on making sure we have everything we need and to stay out of the way.
“How am I supposed to do both things? That seems contradictory.”
I should have known to keep my mouth shut because that landed me with a slap to the face.
“Just shut up bitch, and do what's needed. Go to the kitchen and make some burgers so we have something to eat.”
I do as he says because I don’t want to deal with his anger today, if I don’t have to. I want to tell him to slow down on the beers, but it’s not my place to say, unless I want to make him angrier. Instead, I head to the kitchen and do as he asks.
Not long after, I can hear him opening the door when I hear him call out the name, Amari.
Hmm, are my suspicions right? Is he the case that has finally caught up to me?
Some of the letters he left for me that day seemed very specific, so I know he fell off the docket at some point.
I decide to peek around the corner as he makes his way through the front door, and that’s when we lock eyes.
Amari is not only my stalker, but he's the one I put away for killing a guy at a pub eight years ago.
I feel like I'm going to be sick because I don't know how he found me and how he got close enough to Alexander to be in my home right now.
I run back into the kitchen before I'm caught being out here when I shouldn't be.
He told me to be in the kitchen, so that's where I need to be.
“Hunny, come out here. I have someone I want you to meet,” he says.
Hunny? He never calls me that, so I don’t know why he’s changing up now.
“Coming,” I yell out in a cheery voice.
“This is Amari. I met him about a week ago at The Delight Bar. He told me he just got out of prison, so I helped him get back on his feet. Amari, this is my girlfriend Kabrina.”
“Nice to meet you,” he says.
“Same to you. The burgers for dinner are almost done. Give me five minutes, and I'll be right out with them,” I say while returning to the kitchen.
I can feel myself panicking on the inside. How am I supposed to play it cool like I don't know this man, when I was literally on his case years ago? It would be frowned upon if anyone knew he was in my house right now, but hopefully, they won't find out.
There's chatter coming from the other room when I hear, "Can I get a beer?" from Amari.
“Kabrina, can you get Amari a beer?”
“Don't worry, I can grab one. They're in the fridge, right?”
“Yeah, pick whichever one you want and grab me one too.”
I’m honestly shocked he’s letting him come get his own beer after the lecture he gave me earlier about ensuring I take care of everything requested. Maybe the alcohol is getting to him because he’s had to at least had ten beers so far. I know after a few more, he’s going to be down for the count.
Amari makes his way into the kitchen, opens the fridge, and grabs two beers.
“I don’t know if you remember me,” he begins to say before I interrupt him.
“Oh, I do. You were one of my big cases that I got chewed out for making a plea agreement for. Why are you in my house?”
“I'm not here to hurt you. In fact, I have a plan to get you safe and away from that asshole. Just follow my lead and trust me. I'll explain everything to you later.”
How can I follow his lead when I have no idea what the plan is? I want to trust him, but it’s really hard to do that when I don’t even know him.
I push aside the thoughts of what he can mean by that and bring the burgers into the room.
“Here y’all go. I hope you enjoy,” I set the burgers down in front of them and sit in my own chair in the living room.
“Did I say you can join us in here? How about you go into the kitchen to clean up the mess you’ve made from dinner,” Alexander states.
I put my head down and just do as he says. I don’t know how long I can put up with this anymore. I really hope whatever Amari has planned works.
