Chapter 37 Stone

THIRTY-SEVEN

STONE

My chest aches as I stare down at the darkness that’s swallowed my world whole.

Tucked under her covers, she lies there almost lifeless, while I fight the urge to pinch her just to make sure she’s not actually dead. But the breath that tickles my finger just under her nose is proof enough to ease my anxieties.

I nearly murdered the man that sat beneath a blanket with her, snuggled on the couch. Her head rested in his lap as he stroked her hair back.

When I allowed Hunter to check on Vanna, it truly was because the thought of losing her was unfathomable. Despite her desperate pleas to be rid of me, I still needed that reassurance. In time, Vanna will come back. I’ll be sure of it.

Did I expect he’d take advantage of her mental state? Perhaps, but losing Vanna for the moment is worth it as long as it’s not forever.

Besides, the sheer look of fear that flashed across his features as I approached was priceless.

I reach out and drag a fingertip along the side of her cheek, down her nose, and across her lips. She looks so peaceful in this moment. Like the demons that plague her are also put to rest.

I memorize her face over the next hour because I intend to honor the safe word. Keeping my distance will be nothing short of hell, but for her, I’ll do it.
