Chapter twenty-four

Lance

The Five Stages of Grief.

“Then… do it. What’s stopping you?”

I freeze. The music is still thrumming along with dozens of bodies around us. The strobe lights flicker and swirl around the dance floor, but me? I’m dead still.

I imagine what that would look like for Roman and I.

It’s time that I come to terms with the fact that whatever we had before, it’s dead.

There’s nothing left of it, on his side or mine.

As much as I don’t want to, I have to accept that it wasn’t sustainable in the first place.

It was a silly agreement that made sense at the time, but when things between the two of us started to change, it should have too.

That part of our story? It’s completely over.

That doesn’t mean that our entire story has to be over, though.

I could try to start over with him. We could just be friends.

Banter, joke around, hangout, all the normal friend stuff.

Then maybe, just maybe, it could lead somewhere else. Somewhere better.

Could I— Is it possible that… I could. We could do that. I have to try.

It’s the only option I have.

I wipe the tears from my face before spinning around to face him. “You are fucking brilliant, Olli.”

His brow arches playfully, “It’s not the first time I’ve heard that, but… I’m not sure I’m following.”

“Come on,” I demand as I grab ahold of his hand and start dragging him through the throngs of people. “We’re starting the fuck over.”
