Chapter Thirty-Three

Quinn - Present Day

It’s been a few days since Harley rescued me from the facility. Every time I’ve woken up, he’s been next to me. Sometimes asleep, other times awake and scrolling on his phone or reading a book. Today is the first time I feel well enough to get out of bed and try to be a functioning human.

The bed I’m lying on is big enough for at least three people, and there are soft, fluffy pillows for me to lay my head on. There are no curtains, just a blackout blind and a door to an ensuite bathroom. It’s basic, but in comparison to where I’ve been living, it’s heaven.

“Good morning, Little Magpie. You look a little more human today. Here’s your meds.

We’re gonna get you in to see a doctor friend of mine and get these meds checked so we know you’re taking the right things for the right reasons.

While I’m suspicious of what they’ve been giving you, the risk of you going cold turkey isn’t worth it.

Your body is used to whatever they’ve been giving you, and making you sicker is not on my agenda. ”

“You think they could have been using the wrong ones for me?”

“I wouldn’t put anything past them after meeting them.”

“You met them? And you’re still alive?”

“Never underestimate a man who knows what he wants, Magpie. I had a great time. Your mum and Eric didn’t enjoy our conversation as much.”

“I wish I could have seen the looks on their faces.”

“It was priceless, I have to admit.”

“Toiletries are in the bathroom. I was told by Rhiannon that they were somewhat of a luxury to be earned in the facility, so I made sure you were stocked up on everything from soap to skincare.”

“You met Rhiannon?”

“She was with you when I found you.”

“Is she okay? What if me not being there is taken out on her?” Alarm bells start ringing in my head.

“Don’t worry, Little Magpie, she’s safe.”

“How do you know for sure?”

He walks over to the door and opens it to reveal Rhiannon standing on the other side.

I fly from the spot I’ve been in for the last few days and throw my arms around her. She cries into my hair. My body screams in protest.

“Thank you so much, Quinn.”

“What are you thanking me for? I’ve been unconscious for the last few days and completely unhelpful to anyone.”

“Because without you, I’d never have been free. They rescued me, too.”

“They?” I turn to look at Harley. “Who else was there?”

“All in good time, Little Magpie. Go. Get ready.”

I stand there bewildered. I still have no idea where I am. All I know is I’m somewhere safe, and no one can find me.

The one thing I do know is that I smell so bad and I’m in desperate need of a shower, so I grab a towel and head to the bathroom.

I look back at Rhiannon. “Don’t go anywhere, promise?”

“I promise, Quinn. You’re stuck with me now.”
