29. Ride To My Oasis
Ride To My Oasis
~ASTRAEA~
“ W e’re driving?” I ponder before I give Ember and Blaze their own set of pets and scratches. They’re happily licking my face before scurrying away with Lily, Harley, Sunshine, Clove, and Thor. I swear they act like a pack because the moment they’re out in the massive backyard, they’re howling in unison before chasing one another.
“Sort of,” Kai admits, his voice coming from behind me.
I have to pause and admire his look because fuck…
Goodness, this man looks good in all black.
“Are we attending a funeral?” I ponder. I lick my bottom lip while admiring him from head to toe.
It takes his deep chuckle to pull me out of obviously being smitten with him in his black ensemble. He takes my hand, pressing it lightly to his lips.
My palm tingles at his touch.
“Funeral of all my enemies trying to create a hate train between me and Kenji,” he offers in amusement. “Certainly.”
“Ugh,” I groan. “Don’t tell me that shit is still trending?”
“Wild and free,” he hums as he wraps his hand around mine, encouraging me to follow him as we leave the pups to be off with their mischief. Kai ensures there are two dog sitters on the property at all times, which has been marvelous, with us touring around from studio to studio.
We pass by my “temporary room,” which I haven’t been able to see until something catches my eye. Pausing in my steps, I can’t help but take a peek, only for me to gasp in surprise before I let Kai go and run into the room to see the beautiful grand scheme of it.
“WHAT IS THIS?!” I don’t even know where to look first before I’m squealing and skipping straight into my nest as if it’s nighttime and not the middle of the day.
Clearly, I’m letting my Omega instinctive thoughts overrule my senses because I’m nestled into the biggest, comfiest beany couch thing. It’s even more epic because it’s decorated with different t-shirts that I know are from each member of our new pack.
My heart swells bigger and bigger with each scent I pick up. I can tell exactly which shirts are whose as I pick the designated t-shirts that resonate with my men.
Icarus’ black fitted t-shirt that I’m sure he sweated buckets in. Then there’s Kenji’s long shirt that’s far too oversized with a cool design in front that screams gothic paradise. The tank top has to be Kai’s, something he probably wore when he was playing with the dogs, but I can catch hints of all their scents. And, of course, Nathaníel’s white shirt that I remember seeing him wear when we were in the studio trying different sounds.
I don’t even acknowledge Kai’s in the room and sit quietly next to my little oasis until I catch onto the glint of a guitar pick.
“Oh…” It takes me a few added seconds for it to click in. “OMG! I’m so sorry! I didn’t think you guys were going to make this room so…” I don’t even know what word could truly describe the vibe of my space. “Homey? That’s not even a proper word to explain it.”
“Homey works,” he assures me with a sweet smile. “Do you like it?”
“Like it? I LOVE IT!” I squeal and wiggle over until I’m at the edge of the beanie and next to him. “Sorry. I got distracted.”
“You got excited and very comfortable,” he teases with a wink. “Your reaction proves you adore the changes we did.”
“Yes,” I whisper and admire the room that’s so full of life. The bed itself is huge. I can tell it’s a queen-size poster bed, which I’m a bit thankful for because I’d be swimming in a king-size. Queen is a good balance to fit me and even be sandwiched between two of the guys.
It would be a tight fit with Icarus and Nathaníel, but Kenji and Kai would fit nicely…
The poster bed has a nice matte black base but is accentuated with a metallic purple-blue base that shifts depending on the angle the light hits it. The decor follows the pattern with gold accents with the occasional fuzzy white blanket and the nice hanging egg chair that’s decorated with blue and purple flowers and twinkling lights.
The corner is absolutely perfect, with a bunch of books I’ve wanted to read but never had the time to sit down and enjoy. The spot is already tempting, making me even more excited at the idea of sitting there.
The desk space on the opposite of the room is not only inviting but looks extremely comfortable. I can tell all my important documents are filed alphabetically in binders along a black bookshelf, while I notice the metallic blue-purple filing cabinet that I’m pretty confident will carry all my NDA documentation that needs to be concealed just for me.
The chair looks extremely comfortable, with a golden accent, while the seat and back cushion are a fuzzy cushion material that looks supportive and warm. I can already envision sitting in this place in the wintertime, brainstorming various songs that can hit those feelings in the heart of the season.
Anything I can think of is in this space, and the nest is perfectly placed to make me feel like I can nestle and forget anything bothering me.
Seeing the walls decorated in various decor, including a music clef with little music notes, proves the guys not only worked hard to personalize it to my taste but ensured to incorporate little tidbits about me they’ve picked up on over the last few weeks of getting to know one another.
Truthfully, it’s perfect.
Absolutely perfect.
“When did you guys manage to do this?” I whisper in awe, trying my best not to get so emotional. My mother never made this effort to decorate my room to make it so divine and inviting. Yet a group of men I met just a few weeks ago can come together and create something so welcoming and blissful with my comfort in mind.
I’m emotionally moved to the core.
“When we were doing different studio stops,” Kai reveals. “We took turns while you were helping, listening, and tweaking the tracks.”
“But… the drive alone back here must have taken hours!”
“Yeah.” He shrugs as if two- to five-hour drives are nothing. “It was worth it to see how happy you are.”
“Kai.” I really want to cry. “Thank you.”
He smiles and reaches out to rub my cheek.
“You’re welcome, our Sweet Omega.”
We stay in the spot for a few minutes, allowing me to shimmer on this place and how I’ll soon get to stay here whenever I want. The idea of finally having a place to call home feels like a huge blessing.
How a few weeks can go by, and now everything is… right? Balanced?
Whole and fulfilled.
“Kai,” I whisper his name and look at him, admiring his calm expression while breaking the silence that I’ll admit was so comfortable. I understand now what Icarus meant. How Kai’s presence has this ability to make you acknowledge and admire things you wouldn’t do with other people.
“Hmm?”
“Can I tell you a secret?”
“Sure,” he assures me. “But if you’re a serial killer, you have to promise not to put me on that list.”
I giggle at his spontaneous humor, shaking my head.
“You wouldn’t even make it on that list, but I’m sure you can guess who’d be there.”
He smirks as he reaches out to play with my hair.
“What’s your little secret, Sweet Omega?”
“Not sure if it’s considered little,” I admit with a shy grin. “But… um… what if I told you I was Blair Vesper?”
He takes a moment to think about it, though his expression remains calm.
“I’d say I’m not surprised and that could be why you’re so quick in fixing lyrical discrepancies,” he announces in awe. “I already knew you were talented, but I guess knowing how creative you are just makes me happier.”
“R-Really?” I stare at him in surprise. “You’re okay… with me being Vesper? With the idea of me continuing my various careers?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” he counters in confusion. “I’m sure if you told the others, none of them would mind. Well, if Nate Jr. was still in the picture, of course, he’d lose his shit, seeing as the idea of a woman being more successful than him would drive him insane, but other than that, we’d support you.”
He looks over at the desk, looking excited.
“I’m glad we got you a big desk. I wasn’t too sure if you’d spend a lot of time there, but I suggested to the others that we should get a big enough desk to have space to spread your papers out if need be. You had so many files and paper documents, I wanted you to feel like you could organize them properly when you’re amid your working process.”
“You guys are always so considerate of me,” I whisper in praise. “I appreciate it.”
“Anything to make our Omega comfortable and happy.” He offers his hand. “Want to go for our ride or cuddle?”
Both are so tempting, but my curiosity spikes at the reminder that we are supposed to go out.
“Ride!” I declare with excitement. “I got distracted. Sorry.”
“No apologies are necessary,” he reassures me as I place my hand in his. “I just hope you’re not afraid of going fast.”
“Why would I be afraid of going fast in a car?” I ponder as he helps me up.
“You’ll find out in a minute,” he offers as he leads the way once more.
Admiring my room one more time, we’re off to the basement garage. All the guys have their share of taste when it comes to vehicles, but I can tell Kai enjoys cars. There’s just this playful, boyish expression that takes over his face when he talks about various cars, which is why I’m prompting different questions as we walk through the massive garage and admire the various cars they have for both casual use and collection purposes.
When the garage door begins to open as we approach, I’m ready to see what car we’re taking to who knows where, but my eyes widen at the sight.
“No fucking way,” I immediately declare, noticing the dark metallic purple with hints of blue and silver element sitting on the seat of a motorcycle. “Don’t tell me we’re riding that?!”
“Scared?” he says with a sly grin that has me squealing in excitement.
“Fuck no!” I’m running to the bike in a heartbeat, listening to Kai’s low laughter as he casually walks toward the massive motorcycle. I’m not good with names, so I have no clue what brand it is. What I do know is that the bike is decked out with this nicest matte wrap that accentuates the metallic accents.
The wheels are massive, in my opinion, but I noticed there are LED lights along the silver rims that make me excited to see what this looks like at night.
“You’re loving the look, huh?” Kai says, as he’s obviously admiring me. I’ve been so obsessed with acknowledging every bit of this bike that I hadn’t realized he’d been watching me.
“I love everything about it!” I emphasize. “I want to ride, but I guess I haven’t had much confidence to get out there and try. Feels like a hobby to enjoy with company, especially in the beginning.”
“It is nice to ride with friends when starting out,” Kai agrees, as he walks over to pick up my helmet. “You want to try now?”
“Hell to the no.” I squirm away, making him laugh.
“You’re not one to cower from a challenge,” he acknowledges while I stubbornly cross my arms and shake my head.
“I’m not, but this is the one time I decline,” I note. “I don’t even know where we’re going. If it’s for burgers that’s out of this gated community down and down the street, sure, but onto the freeway? Nope. Not my newbie ass.”
He’s grinning from ear to ear as he approaches me. When he’s before my pouting face, he can’t help but lean right until our lips are inches apart.
“Is my Sweet Omega scared?”
I narrow my eyes at him, trying not to admit the truth, but fuck. I can’t imagine driving this big bad boy with him at the back, watching my every move.
Nope. It won’t work.
“Yes,” I dare to admit. “Now, shoo!” I use my hands to make shoo gestures that have the cunning man smirking before he walks around me so he can hug me from behind. I don’t squirm from his hold as I feel the gentle touch of his lips at the top of my head.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of,” he comforts quietly. “It’s an exhilarating experience and gives you an odd sense of power. Like you’ve gained this newfound independence by being one of the few who can drive such a thing. Not to say there aren’t a lot of motorcyclists, but there’s this ongoing risk and stigma surrounding them. As though riding is an act of defiance in our society that pretends driving luxury cars is what makes you badass.”
He proceeds to kiss my neck, making me melt into him while I lift my head back, encouraging him to continue.
“You’ll see when we’re riding how it feels, and you let me know if you want to practice together,” he suggests. “We already got you a bike.”
“You didn’t,” I whisper in surprise as I lean back so I can turn my head and be inches from his face.
His proud grin says it all, leaving me too stunned to speak.
Placing a soft kiss on my parted lips, Kai winks and moves back enough so he can slide my helmet on.
“Get your sexy ass on that seat, Sweet Omega,” he encourages. “I’m gonna do a quick check-through and make a phone call.”
I simply nod, admiring him getting into focus mode as he does what he explains is a routine check to make sure the bike is good to go. He normally isn’t as tedious, but because I’m coming with him, he’s taking the extra precautions, which is so nice.
Once he’s done with his call and settled on the bike, he slides his helmet on his head. I feel his hands as he seeks mine, pulling my arms to wrap tightly around his waist.
I don’t think he realizes how hot this all is.
To have a man who knows how to work a motorcycle and do all the safety checks to ensure the bike is good because he cares enough about you not to wish harm your way. It’s sad to admit most Alpha doesn’t give a damn, but I’m coming to realize they’re not all like that.
None of the men in my pack are like that.
“Ready, Astraea?”
“Ready,” I declare, trying not to sound nervous with excitement. There’s a giddiness boiling inside me at the idea of being on this motorbike with Kai, which only accelerates when the bike roars to life.
Kai looks from left to right before he lowers his visor. I notice he stares at the left one more time before giving some sort of head nod.
Following his gaze lands me on Icarus, who’s leaning against the door frame of one of the massive sheds. His look of approval shows in the depths of his eyes while he lifts his cup of coffee that’s still steaming hot from how those grey gloves rise from the black mug.
He’s in shorts, despite it being a tad chilly today, which tells me he was probably preparing to go for a run or to do some sort of workout.
Either way, seeing him gives me a sense of relief and accomplishment, even though I haven’t achieved anything by going on a bike ride with Kai. I guess his approval stems from me taking that next step of getting closer to my pack.
Having Kai take me for a ride on his bike is another checkmark in my book.
We’re starting to move, which prompts me to give Icarus a slight wave, so he knows I see him and wish farewell. His smirk grows into a gorgeous smile as his eyes soften at my gesture, his free arm rising so he can give me a simple wave.
“Hold on tight, Astraea,” Kai prompts, drawing my attention to him as we go down the driveway onto the road that leads to the massive set of gates. “This bad boy goes a tad fast.”
“Okay!” I reply and further wrap my arms around his waist, excited to see how fast this bike goes.
It’s not until we’re on the freeway that Kai goes full speed, and wow.
The bike is fast as fuck!
I squeal in pure elation as I take in the beautiful views of the various trees and how the leaves are beginning to change. It dawns on me that we’re in the mid-stages of fall, the leaves now beautifully shifted to various shades of color, from the enriched shades of green to the mixed beauty of red, orange, and yellow. It makes my heart swell with so much appreciation as the slightly chilled air fills my lungs, making me feel alive.
I haven’t felt like this in a long time.
I’ve missed this freeing sensation and how enlightening it all is.It makes me look back on how suffocating my life was, especially under the same roof as my mother. How desperate I was to be free from her shackles and to enjoy life, despite the fears of being alone in this massive world.
The ride encourages me to look back and be thankful that gaining a sense of independence led me down this crazy path. I strived to become someone, not simply due to my mom’s need to brag to the world about the little achievements I’ve done, thanks to her birthing me, but because I had so much to offer to the world.
Kai, Icarus, Kenji, and Nathaníel were right.
I have so much talent, and it shouldn’t be kept beneath the shadows just to make others comfortable. If I hadn’t pushed myself out of my comfort zone to create these various foundations of solicitude and income, I wouldn’t have found this net of security in my life.
I wouldn’t have carved myself into a woman who didn’t simply submit to any Alpha on the block.
My experiences and journey brought me down this path, where I ended up meeting this pack who has changed my life in so many ways and continues to help me grow in this world that’s morphed to belittle my worth.
There’s no need to hide anymore.
I deserve to be proud and free with my identity.
Whether it’s Astraea Soleil or Blair Vesper.
I’m proud to be both, and it’s about time I come to terms with that publicly.
Whether they accept it or reject it is their prerogative.
What matters is me being confident in who I am in this world and walking in that truth, no matter the good or bad.
I’m so caught up in my decision that I don’t realize we’re here until the bike comes to a complete stop.
Leaning back from Kai’s back, I gasp at the massive Japanese temple before us.
“Wow,” I say in awe as Kai gets off his bike and takes his helmet off.
As if that’s a cue, multiple men in black emerge and immediately bow in Kai’s presence while a woman in an all-white suit walks toward us.
Kai offers his hand to me, helping me get off the bike before I slip the helmet off.
Despite my attire of black leather tights, a black bralette, and a black leather jacket, I feel way underdressed in such an environment.
“良い一日, Young Master.”
I frown at the words, my brain trying to translate, but my Japanese isn’t very good. I know the basics, but it’s not a language I’m strong in, especially when I learned the tidbits from dramas when Kamari went on a binge marathon of Japanese dramas. Then she moved on to Korean, and that binge hasn’t ended yet.
“Good day, Cami,” Kai greets, squeezing my hand. “Can you kindly speak English out of respect for my guest?”
She briefly looks my way, her eyes taking me in from head to toe. She specifically takes a few added seconds to acknowledge my short hair. I’m sure she’s probably judging the color that is out of the ordinary in combination, but I don’t cower to her gaze when her eyes lock with mine.
We’re having a staring contest, and I’m not sure if she’s an Omega herself, but there’s this instructive need not to back down.
To prove I’m no scaredy cat in this intimidating environment of uncertainty.
“Very well, Young Master,” she finally replies while maintaining our tense eye contact. “Good day to you, Miss.”
“Miss Soleil,” I introduce with a respectful tone. I don’t want to be bitter, despite not liking the vibes she’s giving. “Pleasure to meet you.”
She smiles slightly, but I can tell it doesn’t reach her eyes. Truthfully, I don’t care if she doesn’t approve of me. I feel like it shouldn’t matter who she is, seeing as Kai’s the one standing at my side, holding my hand confidently.
“Likewise,” she ends up saying, though her eyes finally peel away from me and return to Kai. “Did you make an appointment, Young Master? Your arrival wasn’t expected.”
“No, I didn’t,” he says firmly. “I doubt I need an appointment to see my own parents.”
“Yes,” she admits and bows her head. “My apologies, Young Master. Right this way.”
Parents? Holy shit. This temple is Kai’s house?
I’m trying not to be nervous, but fuck. I would have at least dressed up a bit nicer than looking like some sort of hooker with the all-black vibe. At least, I’m sure that’s what his parents will probably think of me.
I decide not to focus on it since there’s no way of changing into something more “appropriate” with us already here and heading to meet his apparent parents. I’m trying to figure out why he’d even bring me here, but it’s not long before we’re walking down a beautiful pathway of stained glass that decorates the ground, which shifts into a bridge of pink, purple, and blue pebbles.
The archway hovers over a little pond of various fish, the exotic view proving that these creatures within the water are various rare ones that had to be imported here to co-exist in these maintained waters.
The alluring beauty of nature, mixed with the red pillars and design of the temple, gives traditional Japanese vibes I’ve seen in movies or anime shows. To see that it’s so well maintained here makes my heart warm.To preserve your traditions and culture seems like a privilege not many get to achieve here in America, so it makes me feel happy that Kai doesn’t need to lose this part of his life and culture.
When we reach a set of doors, we’re instructed to take off our shoes, which we do. Before entering, we bow our heads as a bell is rung. I can’t grasp the sentiment of it, but Cami’s voice follows.
“My Lord and my Majesty. You have special guests.”
“They may enter,” a deep voice declares, allowing us to walk into the massive space.
Now, I’m trying not to look so amazed and baffled as I take in the two individuals sitting on the floor in traditional garments. The male looks like an older Kai, only his hair is double in length, tied in a ponytail, yet I can assume it’s long enough to reach the floor they’re kneeling on.
The woman sitting next to him steals my attention away. The mesmerizing essence of beauty in her gaze as she’s decorated in the finest silks and golden jewelry leaves me speechless. She’s wearing an elegant, rich kimono mixed with red, gold, and various pink shades, while her skin is so pale, I can’t tell if it’s her natural shade or if her foundation is flawlessly that color.
Her red lips seal the look, while her glimmering eyes of surprise and actual excitement make me feel less nervous. She’s beaming with a smile in a heartbeat before she rises up.
“Kaisor! My sweet son!” She speaks in English, which is surprising, while her arms open wide. “Oh, the years! Look at my baby.”
I can see the immediate relief in Kai’s profile as he lets go of my hand so he can walk over to his mother to greet her. I try not to look so awkward standing there as I watch the way his mother embraces him so lovingly.
Maybe I never acknowledge it, but in this moment of welcoming, I’m seeing the big difference between how a mother who loves their child greets them after so long versus the way I’ve been greeted.
Especially these last few years when I’m not bearing thousands of dollars in bags and jewelry.
“It’s been a long while, my son,” the man greets, and he, too, looks so proud as he smiles warmly at Kai.
Kai smiles and gives his father a quick hug.
“I did make you a promise, so I had to get that done with before having the guts to return,” Kai reveals as his father pats his back in assurance.
“Oh, really,” his father taunts as Kai pulls back. His eyes land on me, clearly taking me in from head to toe before he looks at Kai. “I see.”
I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean, but I try not to look “small” or “defeated.” I simply stand my ground, my hands held in front of me as I stand with my back straight.
If this is some sort of test, I don’t want to cower away.
Kai brought me here for a reason, so I must prove I’m strong enough to endure whatever is waiting for me.
“Her sense of style is delightful,” his mother announces, making my heart skip a few beats at her sudden approval. “Honey. Remember when I used to wear all that attire? Ah. You loved it.”
He clears his throat in response, making his wife giggle in happiness while Kai just smirks. He walks back to me, and when he reaches my side, he doesn’t hesitate to take my hand in his once more.
I notice how the room has men in black standing against the walls, bowing their heads as if waiting for any sort of order. It’s fascinating to witness, but it also proves the power and status Kai’s family carries.
“I won’t be staying long,” Kai admits as he looks at his parents. “I came to uphold the promise that I made when I left these grounds years ago. I hope with my accomplishments that I’ll be granted what was promised in return.”
I can’t help but look at him, acknowledging his side profile and the seriousness in his gaze. I’m not sure what he could have bargained for when leaving this place that must have been his home for a long while.
More importantly, I can’t quite figure out why my presence is needed.
Kai’s mother looks at her husband, and we wait for him to respond to Kai’s request.
“I told you not to return unless you had the balls to be the man you desire and not a puppet that follows stupid decisions,” his father reveals. “And in exchange, I’d let you do what you want with your public image, which included performing with that band of friends of yours.”
“Their band is called Bloom Salvation, my dear,” his mother notes with glee before looking our way. “I’ve been hearing a magnitude of gossip about you guys no longer going on tour.”
“They’re going on tour,” I speak up, drawing the attention to me. “It’s not public knowledge, but the original lead singer… or at least, the one everyone is used to seeing, has quit and is spreading rumors to sabotage the band.”
“Ah. The Nathan boy,” she declares and nods her head in understanding before looking at her husband. “See? Didn’t I say he was the problem in the band’s dynamic? I knew he was bad news when he told Cynthia that whole lie when Suzy was found dead. My instincts are never wrong. A shame Cynthia hasn’t picked up on using those intuitive senses.”
“You and I know that she knows exactly what happened to her daughter,” he responds calmly, almost dismissively. “If she let go of her broken pride with her husband and apologized to their other son, they wouldn’t be suffering.”
“Suffering?” I quietly ask and look at Kai.
“They’re referring to Nathaníel and Nate’s parents,” Kai reveals. “All our parents used to be super close. However, after Suzy died, their parents basically shunned everyone. My parents tried to speak with Cynthia, their mother, but she was so struck with grief, she didn’t really listen. At the time, they were relying on Nate’s paychecks from his spike in fame, even though the voice of all that success was Nathaníel. Nate threatened to cut them off if they didn’t isolate Nathaníel for Suzy’s death as punishment… and well, they agreed.”
“They weren’t the only ones who agreed, now were they?” his father brings up, forcing us to look at Kai as he sighs.
“I was naive and wrong back then,” Kai quietly admits. “I was desperate to prove myself to you. Prove to anyone who doubted my potential. I wanted to come back here, famous and thriving, and rub it in your face that I could be successful without your aid. That I didn’t need the association to our family name and the true deeds we commit in the shadows.”
Kai shrugs, and I can see his nervousness as he briefly looks my way.
The fear flickering in the depths of his pupils that I’ll judge him.
That I’ll push him away.
I squeeze his hand, giving him a motivational nod before he swallows and turns his attention to his parents, who wait patiently for him to continue.
“It wasn’t until I started to see how selfish and negative Nate’s influence was on our group that I realized how fucked up my decision was. Watching us alienate Nathaníel, who was simply a victim in all of this, all because our images were on the line,” he reveals. “When that settled in, I didn’t feel the same passion for music. I didn’t want to perform or try to be on stage. To be honest, I didn’t feel the need to speak because what could words do? They couldn’t change what had occurred and what we allowed. They always say actions speak louder than words… and the saying is true. Until I had the balls to take action, there was no point associating myself with a band that couldn’t put the action in acknowledging all the wrong Nate was doing to get to the top.”
He holds my hand a bit tighter as he slowly bows his head.
“I ran away from my responsibilities. Away from my lineage, thinking I’d be cast away for my cowardly actions, but I knew deep down neither of you used my behavior when I was younger against me. You always sent letters and gifts, telling me when I was ready to come home, I’d always be welcome. At any time. No matter the season,” he reveals.
I’m in awe at the revelation as I slowly look at his parents, who carry blank expressions as they listen to his admission.
“Whenever I wanted to return, I was afraid of the outcome. Not because I was scared of the potential consequences but because my current predicament hadn’t changed. The negative influence in my life hadn’t left. They were still there, rooted in my daily life like a toxic detergent sticking to every thread of my clothes. I knew that without removing that toxin from my life, the cycle would repeat itself, and I’d never be free of its captivity,” he confesses and lifts his head once more. “The woman standing next to me is Astraea. She’s an Omega who somehow waltzed into our lives, and the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of change upon her arrival.” He smiles, looking amused as he thinks of my abrupt arrival in their lives.
“At first, I was apprehensive. I didn’t want an Omega coming into our lives to abuse us. Another toxin that’d make things even more messed up than they were becoming, but Astraea was the tornado of change I realized we needed. Someone who entered our lives and moved our focus so we could realize our world shouldn’t be centered on this negative individual who is trying to lead us astray,” he summarizes.
“I started realizing what I wanted. That I was living in a shell of receipt, and I was tired of not being seen. The constant ridicule revolving around my actions for not speaking up added mockery in all the commotion, but truthfully, it annoyed me because it was the truth. That I barely spoke, not because there was nothing to be said, but because I’d lost that spark to engage and be listened to.”
He lets out a sigh before taking a deep breath, letting that air out slowly.
“I became the puppet you told me I’d be if I went down the path with Nate, and I guess it took Astraea entering our lives to realize how damaging it was becoming. How trapped I felt and that desperate need to be free from the cocoon I’d encased myself in for years,” he reveals. “So… that toxin is finally out of our lives, and well… I’m here to state I’m ready to be free. To show the bold transformation of who I wish to be, but I wanted my parents’ forgiveness and blessings.”
I can see the swaying emotion in his mother’s eyes as they soften with her son’s words. His father still has a blank expression on his face, but his eyes can’t lie.
The reflection of pride is very clear in his gaze.
Kai bows his head once more.
“I apologize for my behavior and actions from the past. Your words of wisdom and guidance were not only a blessing but something I’ll never take advantage of again. If you’d see in your hearts to give me a second chance, I’ll prove my loyalty and devotion in the aspects of my life that make me feel alive, loved, and honorable.”
I not only feel proud of him for gathering the courage to do this, but I support him enough to turn my attention to his parents and also bow my head in respect and support.
I can hear the slight gasps of surprise from the men in back from different areas of the room, but I remain in place, squeezing Kai’s hand in support. If we have to stay in this position for hours, so be it.
I’m here to support him but also to prove that through thick and thin, I’ll stand by his decisions and accept the consequences together as any Omega would for her Alpha.
“Raise your heads,” his father instructs, encouraging us to lift our gazes to him.
I’m relieved to see his curved lips as he smiles at both of us.
“It brings me great relief to see my son has not only found an Omega, but one who would bow in his stead, despite not knowing the full details of his circumstances,” he speaks to me directly. “Our culture is a lot different. Our traditions are usually hard to accept in this new world and country that changes so rapidly. However, seeing your presence and initiative to support my son and encourage his growth as a man leaves my heart in peace. It proves he’s ready for a new chapter of change, and as his guardian, it’s my duty to support and encourage him, as a supportive parent would,” he reveals.
He looks at his wife then, and she squeals in glee as she claps her hands.
“Which means you’ll visit with the rest of your pack soon, yes?” she asks Kai in delight.
The tension in Kai’s muscles fades as he relaxes while bobbing his head in approval.
“I guess so,” he admits almost shyly.
“Which reminds me,” his father speaks up and arches an eyebrow our way. “What’s this regarding you and Kenji?”
Oh, shit…
“Uh…” I end up speaking up while looking at Kai nervously. He doesn’t look worried about the topic, but I’m not sure how he’s going to reveal it.
“Whatever they’re saying about me and Kenji being together is valid,” Kai announces. “We like each other. Have for a long time. I wasn’t necessarily hiding it, but I guess neither of us was ready to be public about it. Nate sold it to any publicist who would give him cash. Took the pic of us in the studio as ammunition.”
“Interesting,” his father hums. I can’t tell if he’s mad or approving of such news. “And your Omega… Astraea approves of this relationship within your established pack.”
“Yes,” I say firmly and try not to blush at the intriguing topic. “Their love was solid before I entered their lives. Why would I interrupt that? If they’re happy with one another, I should be just as pleased with the connection. Besides, I have commitments that may not allow me to be there to support them if something arises that needs resolving. Therefore, they have one another’s support until I can return and do what an Omega does for her pack mates.”
That’s the best way to describe it without selling out our “sex life” business to everyone in this temple.
His mother is giggling in a heartbeat while her husband is side-eyeing her.
“Oh, c’mon now! You weren’t even going to scold him when the news was spreading all over the place,” she giggles and reaches over to lightly tap his shoulder. “You saw the picture and even said Baek grew to be an attractive young man! Admit it. You’re happy he at least chose someone so handsome!”
“My sunshine,” he groans, clearly embarrassed with how his cheeks begin to grow red. “I believe you’ve forgotten we’re with company.”
“Nope,” she proudly states. “Let them spread the news. That means we can have a pack ceremony and get professional photos done! Can you imagine our Kai and Kenji having photos together in the traditional robes? And Astraea in a stunning kimono?! Oh! We should contact Baek’s family and see if they would want to do the traditional hanbok attire. Oh, we should do three different weddings! Oh, this is so exciting! I’m sure Baek’s sister would love to take part. Would make her feel a part of the family and with our support!”
“Mom,” Kai whines. “You’re getting too far ahead. We have a tour starting in a few days.”
“Ah, yes, yes,” she brushes it off but is smiling from ear to ear. “Tour first, then wedding preparations! Oh, Astraea! I’d love for us to go out for tea and even meet your family.”
“If you don’t mind meeting my dad and his pack?” I offer and quietly add, “My mom isn’t the best influence in my life, so I’d kindly wish for her not to attend.”
“That’s a shame,” she comments but smiles comfortingly in my direction. “I can wholeheartedly support your wishes. I’d be honored to meet your dad and his pack, especially if it makes you happy. We can sort all of that once the tour is done, yes?”
“I’d appreciate that,” I confess, unable to stop myself from smiling with relief. I didn’t think she’d be so accepting without asking many questions.
“I’d be honored to meet them as well on a separate occasion. I’d have to book a little more advance to ensure security is at par, but I would indeed like to meet your dad and his pack and get to know more about our future daughter-in-law.”
“D-D-Dad,” Kai groans. “At least let us get her a ring and propose before you say those things.”
“Then work faster,” his dad dismisses him, making his wife laugh in amusement.
“Honey, you’re rushing him,” she giggles. “Why don’t you tell him where you put his guitar, seeing as he won’t be able to do any touring without it?”
“Guitar?” I end up asking as I look at Kai, who smirks.
“My family passed down a specific electric guitar every generation,” Kai reveals. “I asked my dad to put it away for me until I felt the passion to play it again. I vowed not to perform on stage without it, which is why I decided to gather the balls to come and confront this issue. I mean, I knew it was time for me to acknowledge the elephant in the room, but I just needed that push to do it.”
He looks at me and grins.
“None of the guitarists were meeting the standard for Blooming Salvation’s touring debut, and I figured if I stepped to the plate, I could get Icarus out of retirement.”
“Retirement?” I play the fool, just to see what Kai will say.
“Icarus is a one-hit everything,” Kai reveals.
“A one-hit wonder?” I try to correct his phrasing, but Kai shakes his head.
“Icarus never debuted and disappeared. He promised he wouldn’t perform unless we did it together. Meaning he, Kenji, and I were on the stage with Nathaníel in the mix. Nate wouldn’t ever allow that, so Icarus focused on becoming a manager in the music biz, but he’s talented in everything. Has perfect pitch and can play every instrument. He sings fucking good, too. Our wildcard.”
“Damn,” I whisper.
“So… if I’m going on that stage, so is he. Don’t know what song will compliment his voice, but I think I know a certain someone who can create something that will go pretty viral on the charts.”
Watching the way his eyes twinkle with pride makes me grin from ear to ear as I bob my head.
“I think Blair Vesper can come up with something legendary,” I hum.
“Blair… Vesper?” his mother speaks up as she looks between us. Her gaze then lingers on me. “You’re Blair?”
“She didn’t say she was Blair,” her husband notes. “Vesper’s some rich Alpha that always trends for every song he writes. Even I know that.”
“That’s what the press wants you to believe,” his wife argues and brushes him away as her attention is back on me. “But what if Blair Vesper was an Omega?! You know how empowering that would be?!”
“Well, you’re in luck,” I hum shyly. “You’re looking at ‘him’.”
“AH! Really?! See honey! I was right!”
“Seriously?” he seems baffled, but at the same time, he looks intrigued. “It always made me wonder how a male could write such emotional music when we mostly think with our cocks.”
“Dad,” Kai groans. “Why are you insulting us?”
“It’s true,” his dad huffs. “I think with my cock all the time, so there’s no way I can write emotional shit about love and heartache. Your mother can do that when I do something stupid, and she’s ready to divorce me.”
“I would never,” she hums sweetly, but her grin tells me otherwise. “You know I don’t need to threaten divorce to make your heart break.”
“Diabolical,” Kai mutters in horror.
“Your mom is scary,” I whisper in return.
He nods. “Yeah, she is. That’s why the opposing enemies don’t play around with us. It’s not because of our dad. It’s because of her.”
“Really?”
“Mhmm.”
“I’m not surprised in the slightest.”
“You realize we can hear you, yes?” his father scolds, making Kai clear his throat as he takes my hand once more.
“And that’s our cue to leave,” he declares.
“After you get your guitar from your room.”
“Wait, it’s in my room?” Kai asks his father in surprise.
“Mhmm,” he responds and looks to his wife as she smiles lovingly at us. “I figured it was the best place to keep it safe for when you return. We didn’t change anything in there, so you’re fine,” she assures us. “Go and check. We’ll wait for you two to depart before we resume our duties.”
Kai nods his head, and I can see he’s trying not to be emotional.
“Thank you, Mom and Dad,” he whispers and bows his head.
“It’s good to have you back, my son,” his father acknowledges.
“We missed you, our son,” his mother adds and looks my way. “Welcome to our family, Astraea. We’re honored to have you.”
“Th-Thank you,” I whisper and bow my head in respect.
Kai leads the way once more, and the two of us arrive at a room that’s decorated like a teenage boy. Various sentimental things hang on the wall, from posters of various artists, games, pictures from his youth and young adulthood, and various medals.
It doesn’t take any time to see the electric guitar that’s encased in glass in the corner of the room. It looks so symbolic with how the sunlight is lightly peering onto its slick beauty from the slightly opened blinds.
“It’s been a long while,” Kai whispers as he lets go of my hand to admire it. “They made sure you didn’t collect an ounce of dust, huh?”
I watch the moment as he takes in the room before he gathers the instrument and everything he needs.
When he zips up the case and throws the guitar over his shoulder, he turns back to acknowledge me.
“Thank you, Astraea.”
Seeing how emotionally moved he is, I take the few steps needed to be before him as I go on my tiptoes to press my hands along the top part of his chest.
“No, thank you for gathering the courage to return here,” I whisper in praise. “Look at how my Alpha has succeeded. I’m so proud of you.”
I don’t know if it’s the way I look at him or my words of praise, but the first set of tears fall while he leans down to lay a tender kiss on my lips.
We’re finally ready to tackle the world head-on as we walk down this new path to healing.
Finally, healing from the toxin that wished to tear this pack apart.
