New Future

Ifeel like I’ve failed despite knowing that we’ve won. I wasn’t fast enough. I left my brothers to deal with shit alone when I could’ve been there.
But then I wouldn’t have gotten the evidence.
The guilt eats away at me, though. I’m second in line, proving I’m still not worthy of leading.
“Sign here and here, and then you can reunite with your pack. The United Alphas hereby grants you full ownership of the Kismet Pack Estate.” The United Alphas legal representative points to the final page of the stack of documents we’ve been dying to complete since the moment Cali realized she was our perfect mate.
I never believed this would happen all those years ago when Dad sent Cali away because he knew she was my brothers’ and my scent match.
I scribble my signature and set the pen down. It feels so final, like we’re finally and officially putting Dad to rest. I never expected to be in this position. I thought Dad would live to be a hundred, maybe even outlive me.
Not that he’d ever want that.
“Congratulations, Mr. Kismet. You have proven that you and your brothers will serve Pack Kismet well.” The representative gathers the stack of papers and immediately sets them to scan into their system.
I wait for the final sheet to finish and proffer my hand. “We’ll see you at the next United Alphas County Meeting.”
The rep dips his chin in a small nod. “Maybe even at state. You didn’t hear this from me, but the United Alpha Leaders were quite impressed by your town. Your leadership amongst peril speaks volumes of your character.”
I remain expressionless. Should I be honored by his comment? Absolutely. But something about it leaves me unsettled. I’ve always seen myself as second, as a small power in a small town. Power is the downfall of morals, and I’d like to keep mine.
“Thanks again,” is all I say before I turn and head out of the small office van, made to travel on behalf of the United Alphas.
Crisp air circles around me, the sea breeze refreshing against the stale air of the portable trailer.
The United Alphas sent the representative as an apology for their lead agent’s misrepresentation and illegal seizure of our estate.
Will knew how to offer the world to someone with his brutal narcissism.
I’m just glad the dick got what he deserved. I wish I could’ve done it myself.
My phone vibrates from my pocket, and I pull it out to read the screen.
Lucas: Nolan’s awake.
I close my eyes in relief. I knew he’d come to. He wouldn’t dare leave us to live a life with Cali without him. He’d have haunted me for sure if he had.
But Nolan’s always been stronger than that.
Lucas: Hurry your ass up.
Shoving my phone away, I turn and glance at the Kismet Estate. This is our home from now on. I’ll forge my new future with my pack. My pack. I almost can’t believe it.
