The Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge spanned more than five miles over the Croatan Sound. At nearly seven o’clock in the dead of winter, the world was pleasantly dark. The Milky Way glittered like diamonds overhead, and Carolina Bay shrank slowly into a cluster of warm lights behind us.
