Hands of Fate

Earth was home to us before it was home to Humans. Our Gods created the world, and with it, the Cradle.

Fae crawled out of the Cradle of Life first, blessed with any kind of magic you could dream of. Later, Humans emerged, but the Cradle or Our Gods–the Fae do not know–did not bless them with any mighty powers.

Over time, we became your myths, your legends, your fairy tales. Monsters in the night.

But it was not always that way.

As the Fae grew, certain traits prevailed. We separated into factions, groups that formed communities of people with similar gifts, like calls to like after all. Eventually… All were ruled by the Fae Queen.

The Fae are beings who were formed from the Cradle’s light and appeared similar to Humans, but with elongated ears, and fangs. Blooded Fae bear the most mighty of magics, and will live the longest due to the density of the Cradle’s light in their blood.

Shifters–those who could walk among men and can change into a beast–formed packs, and lived in the wild areas of the world. Shifters have their sort of hierarchy, but even their Alphas bend the knee to the Fae Queen.

The Mer are aquatic Shifters–specialists for life in the deeps.

Their beast form transforms them partially–a tail, or tentacles–replacing legs.

Lungs are changed–adapted–allowing them to breathe life from the sea.

They, like their land dwelling brethren and the pull of the moon–feel the pull of the ocean, and cannot remain in their humanoid form while in contact with the sea.

Sorcerers and Sorceresses–people blessed with abilities from some ancient bloodline crossed with Fae–were common in the old days, but are now merely scattered across the globe, living in groups called Covens.

And creatures–beings who are inherently magical, but do not possess a humanoid form–are also considered to be of the Fae.

All those who bear even a drop of the Cradle’s light, are bound to Fae rule.

In ancient times, Fae and Humans coexisted. Where the Fae have always been led by a female, Humanity fell into the rule of Men.

Men–prone to fits of rage, were constantly plunging headfirst into wars–upheaving entire civilizations while we watched. The humans have risen and fallen like the tide, ebbing and flowing while they waged war across Earth.

Human men, however, were not the only ones susceptible to the pull of wrath.

Fae males began whispering, egging the Queen to attack the human strongholds, before they grew strong enough to attack us.

Among those whispering in the Queen’s ear was the leader of the Mer who believed Fae kind should rule all–subjecting the humans to slavery.

This faction also believed that mixed Fae kind was an abomination, calling for a culling of the so-called dirty Fae.

They would take most appealing Human Men and Women to become broodmares and studs for the continuation of what they would deem accepted bloodlines.

They believed that to keep our magic potent, Shifters and Fae should mate within their own subspecies. Under their rule, no Shifter would mate a Fae, and no Fae would ever touch a Shifter.

The Queen–Rhapsody–appalled that such beliefs were held, and knew that such a war between our peoples would decimate both sides, and our home, the Earth. Instead, she withdrew the Fae, vowing to keep those who would bring the end of peace to heel.

For a time, it appeared that she had accomplished that feat.

Rebellion broke out among the Fae, led by the Mer. Fae and Human fought side by side against the rebellion, the battles long and bloody.

On the night of a grand ball, the Rebellion struck its final, fatal blow against Queen Rhapsody.

The Queen and King Consort, their heir and many others in at Court were killed as the rebellion decimated the castle, but not before Queen Rhapsody hid all of Fae kind–defying the Hands of Fate that ended her five thousand year rule.

Her last act as the Fae Queen was to create the Veil. The Veil hides the seat of our power, and all traces of our technologies from Human view. We exist, alongside Humans, interacting with them every day. Most Humans weren’t even aware that there were monsters walking among them.

There are some out there, who believe in the monsters from their legends. Believe we exist. Some are lucky to know us. To know our secret.

The Fae bide our time, waiting for the day that we might share the Earth once more.

With Rhapsody’s Veil hiding all of Fae, the Cradle of Life disappeared as well. Gone from memory.

The rebellion became the Sargasso Council of Mer, claiming independence from the Fae Crown.

With Rhapsody’s heir gone, lines of succession were unclear. In the end, it was decided to pass the Crown to Queen Rhapsody’s second in command–her General, now Queen Ashdawn–who ruled for a thousand years, before her daughter inherited the throne.
