Chapter 15

I stood on the side of the stables watching the woman riding around the barrels we set out yesterday.

I leaned when she leaned. Memories of being in the saddle still flowed through my body even if I couldn’t ride anymore.

She twisted, and for a moment my breath clutched in my chest. Her body turned, and she narrowly missed losing control, but I should have known better.

She was far too good to lose control. Her career wouldn’t end the way mine had.

“Cade.” I jumped when I heard my name called.

Shit. If I wasn’t careful, they’d catch me. I had to stop watching her, but damn it, I couldn’t.

“Yeah.” I walked back toward Cody. He was holding the reins of another beautiful horse that I wished I could ride. I wished I could ride all of them.

“Did you get the stalls ready for the new horses coming for camp?”

I bit back my annoyance. I didn’t need some little kid giving me orders. Acting like I didn’t know shit about ranching and horses and the rodeo. I rubbed at the back of my head. The scare still puckered some.

“Yeah, the stalls are ready.” I sucked it up. This job was the closest I’d come to the past in years, and I wanted to keep it. Needed to keep it. This job might be my only chance of getting back at least a piece of what I lost.

Who is Cade watching? Find out in The Ranch Hand’s Cowgirl. Coming soon.
