Love in the German Ward

In France in 1915, an English nurse falls in love with a German doctor who is a prisoner of war.

She has never cared much for rules, and what passes between them is urgent, forbidden, and seemingly without a future.

Their story would have gone unrecorded if not for drawings discovered more than a century later.

At first the pictures seem slight, but the woman who finds them keeps returning to moments of intimacy an Australian artist had caught in secret.

She is left with the question of who the lovers were, what became of them, and which account of the war those images were meant to give.
