She looks at the sketch scarred by folds – the doctor by the bed of a man. She wonders again at the reason for the folding; no other sketches have been treated so casually.

Then she has another thought. No other sketches have been treated in the same way. The folding may not have been casual, it may have been deliberate. The sketch might have been more important, not less.

The doctor is sitting by the bed. He has pulled a chair close and is holding one of the man’s hands in both of his. His head is bowed.
