Chapter 8

Mycah had me ready to break every rule I put in place about crossing the line with my assistant.

The more time I spent with her, the more that line disappeared.

I found myself drawn to her. Sometimes I sat at my desk and stared at her when I should have been doing work.

She noticed, too, but the way her cheeks rose let me know she wasn’t bothered by it.

Regardless, I needed to reel that shit in, but I honestly couldn’t.

What I said to her at the library about my dick getting hard was so out of pocket, but I had always been a straightforward kind of guy.

Did it get me in trouble? It sure did, but not with Mycah.

She brushed it off and changed the subject.

When she asked me about my previous assistant, I hesitated for a second.

I had to tell her, though, because I knew how people talked, and I didn’t want her to hear it from someone else.

She seemed shocked, but not judgmental, and that was a relief.

I didn’t know if things would progress between us, but I didn’t want her to look at me like I was an ain’t-shit dude, because that wasn’t the case.

I was on the fence about trying to pursue things with her because not only was I her superior, but she went through something that could have caused negative results on her outlook on love.

She seemed to be doing okay, but that was only on the surface.

We hadn’t gotten into deep conversations about relationships, so I wasn’t sure if she was even open to one.

Her ex could have done serious emotional damage to her, and she might have thought all men were like that.

Mycah telling me about her abuse took me back to a time in my life that I couldn’t forget if I tried.

I remembered the day Christie called me in a panic because her boyfriend had threatened her.

I told her to get in the closet until I got there, but by the time I arrived, it was too late.

I admired Mycah for getting out when she did, because things could have been worse.

She seemed to be in good spirits despite it all.

With all the doubts in my head, I still couldn’t stop thinking about her.

From the way she moaned when she ate something good, to the way she bit her bottom lip when she was in deep thought.

When she wanted to ask a question but was hesitant, she would play with her necklace.

There were multiple small things about her that I noticed, but I shouldn’t have.

She was hired to do a job, and she had been doing well.

We came up with some good ideas for the summer bash, and we had planned on finding a space for it.

In the past, we had it in a park near the police station, but I wanted it on a bigger scale.

We could have had it at my family’s hotel, but I wanted it outside.

“You think you could take a ride with me to check out this location?” I asked Mycah when I approached her desk.

She looked up with that radiant smile of hers.

“Yeah, that’s fine. I found a doggy day care for Cashmere, so he’s there today.”

“That’s what’s up. I tried that with Shadow, but he wasn’t beat for it. He likes to come here or stay at home. Occasionally, my brother will pick him up and take him to the hotel. He does like to walk by the beach.”

“Oh. Cashmere loves the beach, so we’ll have to go one day.” She pressed a few buttons on her keyboard, then looked up at me again. “I’m ready. I just have to use the ladies’ room.”

I slipped my hands into my pockets because I wanted to pull her into my arms when she stood up.

“I’ll be right here,” I told her and watched as she walked away.

The red pants she wore showcased the small curves of her hips and her handful of ass. The white shirt she wore was simple, but her breasts looked perfect in it. It tended to get cold in the station, so she wore a red blazer that matched the pants. I noticed she wore a lot of red, black, and white.

Instead of her hair being down like I liked, she had it tucked into a neat ball on the top of her head. I realized I liked it like that as well because it brought out the curvature of her neck and highlighted her cheekbones.

A few minutes later, Mycah emerged from the back, and when she got to her desk, she reached for her phone and bag.

“I’m all set. I guess you’ll bring me to my car when we are done.”

“Yes, ma’am. It shouldn’t take too long. I know you have to get Cashmere.”

I ignored the multiple pairs of eyes that watched us as we walked through the station. The only person who might express some concern would be Donna, but she hadn’t mentioned anything yet. Everyone knew that Mycah and I were working on the bash, so I didn’t think that anyone thought otherwise.

When we got outside, I helped her into the passenger side of my Ford Explorer. Once she was properly secured, I closed the door and walked around to the other side.

“Is this your everyday car, or only for work?” Mycah asked when I got inside.

“This is my work truck. I have a Mustang for everyday driving,” I told her as I buckled my seat belt.

“So a Ford guy, got it.”

“They are very reliable.”

I changed the radio station to a jazz station, then pulled out of the parking lot.

“Let me know if it’s too much air.”

It was a hot day out, so I had to put the air conditioner on. When I could, I liked to ride with the windows down because there was nothing like fresh air, but some days, it would be nothing but hot air blowing through the windows, and I hated that.

“I’m good. So where are we going?”

“There’s a park I wanted to check out. I’ve seen it before, but I wanted to get a good look at the layout.”

“A park is definitely a good idea.”

As I drove, we talked about the type of music we liked.

She told me that her first concert was to see Jill Scott, where mine was Wu-Tang Clan.

I told her that no matter how often I ate tacos, I could never get enough of them.

I pretty much ate any type of taco, but it had to be on a flour tortilla, and I refused to eat corn on it.

I did not like corn at all, which meant I didn’t like corn tortillas either.

She told me that she hated coconuts but pretty much loved any other fruit.

It didn’t take long for us to reach the park, especially because our conversation just naturally flowed from one topic to the next.

There was hardly anyone out, so I easily found a parking spot.

After I shut the truck off, I walked around and opened Mycah’s door. She placed her hand in mine, then I helped her out.

I should have been paying attention to our surroundings, but instead, I watched Mycah as she looked around.

“The parking lot looks big enough. If possible, we could probably put some things in the parking lot and still have space for actual parking.” She hadn’t even looked my way because she was too busy looking at everything else. I could see the wheels turning as we walked through the entrance.

I finally tore my eyes away from her and looked around.

“That might be a good idea.” I fully focused on the area and decided that this would be the perfect place. It had plenty of room for the things we came up with, and space just in case we wanted to add something later.

We walked a little further into the park, and Mycah stopped. She turned to face me with that smile I’d grown accustomed to already.

“This is perfect, Kairo.” She pointed out where she thought we should put certain things. The entire time, her face lit up, and I was happy that I asked her to help me with it. It gave me an opportunity to be in her presence, and I needed the help anyway.

“I think it’s perfect too.” I looked down at her, but she was too busy looking around the park to notice.

“I’m excited!” She clapped her hands, and I just shook my head and chuckled.

She didn’t realize that seeing her so happy did something to me. It made me feel like something in my chest opened, and I wanted to provide more happiness for her.

I had to look away from her because I was feeling too much too fast.

“I think it’ll be a good turnout.”

“Me too. So, what made you become a police officer? And how did you get tasked with doing the summer bash?”

Mycah and I walked further into the park. She didn’t seem to be in a rush to leave, and I certainly wasn’t.

“I wanted to be a police officer since I was a child. My grandfather was one, and it’s my way of honoring him.

As far as the bash, I don’t even know. Last year, it was up to me, and I didn’t want to do it, but I did.

Somehow, it fell on me again this year. I’m not mad at it though. ” I smirked at her.

“Well, I think it’s going to be the best it has ever been.” She beamed. “I also think that’s admirable that you wanted to take after your grandfather.” Her arms were behind her back with her hands clasped together.

The way the sun hit her face made her skin glow.

“Thanks. How did you get into assistant work?”

“Honestly, it wasn’t the plan. The police department where I lived had an opening, and I applied.

I ended up liking it, and here I am. When I went to college, I wasn’t sure what to major in, so I ended up going for business administration.

I figured something was better than nothing, and there were plenty of jobs I could get with my degree. ”

“There is nothing wrong with that. Is there something else you’d rather be doing?”

We came up on a bench, and since Mycah had heels on, I decided we could sit for a bit. She sat next to me, and her scent flooded my senses. Every day, she smelled different, and I liked every scent she wore.

“Is it sad to say that there isn’t? I thought I would have wanted something else, but I truly like what I do.”

I turned a little to face her. She had her hand shielding her eyes from the sun as she looked at me.
