Chapter 10
All night, I thought about Mycah’s lips.
I’d been wanting to kiss her since she walked into the conference room for her interview.
I had finally gotten the window of opportunity, so I decided to go for it.
It was a chance worth taking, and I was glad I did.
Her lips were soft, and I wanted to kiss her again.
I kept it simple because I didn’t want to push too far, but if our date went the way I expected, there would definitely be some tongue action by the end of the night.
That was if she were okay with it. I wouldn’t push her too far, but I would try.
Even though our dinner wasn’t an official date, I was glad that she didn’t turn her nose up when we went to Mable’s.
It was a little run-down, but the place was filled with love, and so was the food.
My family had been going to Mable’s since the place opened.
Ms. Mable was like a second grandmother to me and my siblings.
We used to spend time there after school, eating and doing our homework.
I had even gotten a job there bussing tables when I was a teenager.
Ms. Mable cooked the majority of the food, but she had another cook that came in sometimes.
She also served tables sometimes, especially when I came in.
Ms. Mable was special to me, so I made sure to see her at least once a week.
To know that Mycah was okay with eating there made me feel good.
I woke up in the morning in a good ass mood. Shadow and I went for a walk, then I made myself a smoothie. Unfortunately, that good mood didn’t last because I was called into a last-minute meeting, which meant I didn’t have time to make it to the donut shop.
The meeting also meant that I would arrive at the station later, and it would be longer until I laid eyes on Mycah. They could have easily sent an email, so the meeting was a waste of time, which further pissed me off.
By the time I got to the station, I was ornery, but my mood lifted as soon as I spotted Mycah at her desk.
“Good morning, doll baby.”
Mycah’s head popped up, and she nervously looked around the room.
“Good morning, Kairo. Why would you call me that?” she whispered.
“Nobody heard me. Are you having a good morning?” I asked as I leaned against her desk. This time, she smelled like vanilla. I could only see her shirt since she was sitting, but I smiled because it was red. I glanced in the direction of my office and noticed I had a cup and two bags on my desk.
“I am having a good morning. How about you?”
“I am now. Do you know what that stuff is on my desk?” I tilted my head toward my office.
Mycah’s smile brightened the room, and it made my chest swell every time she blessed me with it.
“I do. I stopped and got you coffee—black, of course—donuts and tacos. I didn’t know you would be late, so I’m sure the tacos are cold by now.”
Her gesture made me feel good inside. My last assistant never brought me coffee or anything. The only thing on her mind was the next time I would let her suck me off.
“Mycah, you don’t understand how that makes me feel.”
I probably should have been more careful about the things I said while we were in the open, but I didn’t care.
“It’s nothing. I got everyone coffee and donuts too. It’s all in the break room.”
I put my hand against my chest and pretended to stumble back.
“And here I was, thinking I was special.”
“Technically, you are, because yours is on your desk, and you got tacos. No one else got tacos.”
“I guess,” I teased as I playfully rolled my eyes.
“Don’t be like that, Kairo.”
I loved it when she said my name, which was why I never wanted her to call me chief like most of the people around here did. Mycah wasn’t most people, and I made sure to treat her as such.
“I appreciate you, doll baby. I think you should come into my office so we can tackle all the paperwork on my desk.”
I could have done some of it by myself and let her work on some others, but I wanted to be in her space.
“Okay. Let me just send this email, and I’ll meet you there. You probably would want to heat your tacos first anyway.”
“Sounds like a plan.” I tapped the corner of her desk, then walked into my office. The tacos might have been cold, but they still smelled good. I was hungry as hell, too, since I hadn’t had anything but a smoothie. I walked out of my office and went to the break room to heat them up.
As I waited for the microwave to beep, I thought about how I was playing with fire, openly flirting with Mycah. This whole thing could backfire on me, but I wasn’t worried.
“Good morning, Chief,” Donna said as she entered the break room.
“Good morning, Donna. How are you this morning?”
“I am doing well. I see you and the new girl are getting along well.”
I could tell Donna was fishing for something, but I wouldn’t give her anything. If she asked a particular question, I would answer honestly. I trusted Donna as much as I trusted Chief Keith, and I knew if I told her anything, she wouldn’t tell.
“We are. She’s doing a good job.”
Donna pinned me with that look that said she didn’t believe shit I said.
“Yeah, she is. It’s obvious you two are attracted to each other. You know I’m not going to tell you what to do, but don’t lose this one.” She patted me on the shoulder and left the break room before I could respond to her.
It didn’t matter how many times people said be careful; I knew what I had to do, and I wasn’t going to jeopardize anything.
When the microwave stopped, I grabbed my tacos and headed to my office. Mycah was already sitting at the long desk on the side of the office, with a slew of papers spread across it. She was so focused that she didn’t even realize I’d entered the room.
“I see you got started,” I said, causing Mycah to jump.
“Yes, and how are you so quiet all of the time?”
“You just don’t be paying attention to your surroundings.” I sat in the chair next to her instead of going to my desk or even sitting across.
“I do, but I don’t think anything is going to happen here.”
I opened the tacos and smiled when I saw they were my favorite ones. Mycah had even got me some of the red sauce I liked on them. I took a bite, then chewed it before I addressed what she said.
“Ideally, nothing would happen to you here since you are surrounded by police officers. Unfortunately, there is always someone who is crazy enough to do some shit, and I don’t want anything to happen to you.
” I moved her hair out of her face so I could look into her eyes.
“With that being said, please be aware of your surroundings.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Thank you.” I returned to eating while she tackled the pile of papers in front of her.
I paid attention to everything Mycah did while I ate.
When she read something she didn’t understand, her brows would bunch, and she would read it multiple times before she asked me anything.
When she wasn’t using her pen, she would tuck it behind her ear.
I noticed that she had taken her shoes off and tucked one of her legs under her butt since she had on pants.
I didn’t feel the need to fill the quietness with unnecessary conversation. I also didn’t feel like I had to look over her shoulder, because she asked questions when necessary.
After I finished eating, I grabbed a pile of papers and went to work.
For a while, we worked together, and the only noise was from Mycah sighing occasionally and the noise through the station. We were in our own little bubble.
Every so often, we would catch each other’s gaze and smile. We ended up so in sync that we both took sips of our coffees at the same time.
“By any chance, are you going to tell me where we are going on our date?”
I gave her a sly grin as I stroked my beard.
“There is no chance.”
She sucked her teeth and softly punched my arm.
“Shouldn’t I know how to dress?”
“I’m sure you’ll figure it out.” I winked. “Make sure you wear something red though.”
Her phone buzzed on the table before she could comment. She picked it up and frowned when she looked at the screen.
“You good?”
She silenced the buzzing, then put the phone back down.
“Yeah. I keep getting these unknown calls, but I haven’t answered them.”
That gave me pause because it could have been her ex, but I was glad that she hadn’t answered.
“And you have no idea who it could be?”
“No. I have my suspicions, but I honestly don’t want to find out. The people who should have my number, have it.”
I searched her face, but I didn’t even know what I was looking for.
“Everyone except me,” I joked. I realized the night before I didn’t have her phone number, and I told myself I would change that before the day was over. “If you ever find out it’s him and you feel uncomfortable, please let me know.”
“I will, and you’re right; you don’t have my phone number. I think we should change that.”
I reached into my pocket and pulled my phone out. Mycah put her number in my phone, then called hers so she could have mine.
“Don’t hesitate to use my number whenever you need to.” I paused and gazed at her lips. “If I could, I would kiss you right now.”
Her cheeks rose as she looked around.
“Too bad you can’t, because I would have let you.”
“Soon. Do you have plans tomorrow night?”
She put her finger to her chin and tapped it. A playful grin spread across her face.
“Well, this police guy asked me out, but he never said when, so I guess not.” She shrugged.
“I guess he playing games, so are you able to go on a date with me tomorrow?” I leaned close, but not too much. I had to be mindful of the people outside of my office.
The angels sang when she smiled and said, “Yes, Kairo.”
She had already agreed on the date, but for some reason, solidifying it made it feel more special.
“We can talk later this evening. Let’s get some more of this shit done.”
Her eyes swung over to the papers, then back to me.
“You’re right. We got our work cut out for us. What the hell did you and the other girl do? Wait! Don’t answer that,” she said as she shook her head and laughed.
“You have the cutest laugh, you know that?”
“I don’t. I like how you didn’t address what I said.”
I tilted my head to the side and stared at her.
“Didn’t you tell me not to?”
“Whatever, Kairo.”
I laughed because I felt like she wanted to know, but at the same time, she didn’t. I knew I wouldn’t want to hear about some shit she did in the past.
We were able to get a good amount of work done over the next few hours before we parted ways. I couldn’t wait to talk to her later when I didn’t have to watch what I had to say.
