Chapter 18

Mycah’s parents were coming to town, so she spent the night at my house so we could spend some time together. It would probably be a couple of days before we saw each other again. She had plans on spending time with her folks, showing them around and shit.

Our relationship shifted from the night we spoke about the summer bash.

I made sure to check in with her to see where her head was at.

I never wanted to be the reason she was triggered by something.

It had been hard to keep things under wraps at work, but we’d done it so far.

I notified Mayor Wilson about it and told him there was no option of me leaving her, and there was no reason why either of our jobs should be in question.

We started dating after we began working together, and I hadn’t treated her any differently from anyone else.

She had to put in for time off like anyone else.

Her lunch breaks were an hour long, just like the rest of them.

Granted, people saw me talk to her more than I did some others, but I had to.

We worked closely together, and we still were playing catchup on all the shit I hadn’t done before she came.

The only thing he said was to keep doing what we had been doing.

If it ever came out, then she would most likely have to be transferred somewhere else.

I would hate for that to happen, but I’d take that over either of us being fired.

She seemed okay with the conditions as well.

I’d known Mayor Wilson for a long time, so he knew if I came to him about a relationship, then I was serious. He’d been a friend of my family since I was a child, so he knew pretty much everything about me.

I wasn’t going to worry about it, though. I was a little nervous about the family dinner because I wanted our families to mesh well. I could see Mycah being around for a long time.

I was on the couch watching television, since Mycah said she wanted to take a nap, but I wasn’t tired. I pressed mute when I heard a weird noise coming from upstairs.

I waited for a minute until I heard it again. It sounded like Mycah had woken up and gotten sick.

Tossing the remote on the couch, I got up and headed toward the steps. I went up the steps two at a time and went straight to the bathroom.

My heart dropped to my feet when I saw Mycah on her knees, hugging the toilet. She had her head over the bowl, throwing up.

I moved closer to her and pushed her hair back.

“I’m right here, baby.” I soothingly rubbed her back as she continued to rid her stomach of whatever was causing her trouble.

When she was finished, she sat back against the wall. I left for a second and got a bottle of water from the small fridge in my room. I knew she would probably throw up again if I gave her faucet water. I messed up by doing that before, and she didn’t like that.

“Here.” I passed her the bottle. “Take small sips.” I went over to the sink and wet a face rag for her. Once I wrung the water out, I went over to Mycah and lowered myself on the floor next to her.

Mycah covered her mouth and turned her head to talk.

“Thank you. I didn’t want you to see me like that, and I need to brush my teeth.” She tried to get up, but I held her back.

“Wait. Take your time getting up. I don’t want you to get dizzy. Plus, I’m not worried about any of that shit. You’re my lady, and there’s going to be times when you might not look or feel your best, but I don’t care about that. Now what do you need from me?”

“I don’t even know. Maybe some crackers and ginger ale.”

“I can do that. Do you know what happened?”

She looked down and rubbed her hand down her thighs. I had to go get what she needed, but I wanted to hear what she had to say. It was crazy because I had an idea.

“I might be pregnant,” she said, then she started laughing.

“What are you laughing for?”

She just looked at me and laughed even more.

I thought I missed something. She went from looking nervous to laughing hysterically, and I was wondering what was going on.

We also needed to address the pregnancy statement.

I didn’t want to get my hopes up, just in case.

I would be ecstatic as shit if she said she was.

“I was going to act like I had no clue that I could be pregnant like them chicks do in them books. It don’t be a condom in sight, and they act like they are surprised when they see them pink lines.

” She giggled. “We haven’t used a condom one single time, so I knew it was a matter of time.

And sir, it seems like you can’t stay out of me for more than five minutes. ”

“Aight, you are exaggerating, but hell no, I can’t. And you are right; we haven’t used one, and it’s been two months already.”

“Damn. I moved, got a new man and potentially a baby all in a two-month span. That is crazy.”

“The Lord knew what you needed.” I winked at her, and she giggled.

I got quiet for a second to process the fact that we might have a baby on the way. Shit moved fast, but none of that mattered.

“It is crazy, but just know that it doesn’t matter what the tests say.

I’m here. If you are pregnant, then we are going to have a baby.

If you aren’t, well, you will be soon.” I smirked.

“For now, we have to get ready for dinner. Do you think you’ll be okay to make it?

” She nodded. “Okay, only if you’re sure.

I know we were both looking forward to this; I want you to be okay first. While you get yourself together, I’ll grab you some crackers, ginger ale, and a few pregnancy tests.

” I stood, then helped her up from the floor.

I turned the shower water on, then helped her undress before helping her into the shower. I wanted to join her, but we didn’t have time. Once she was good, I left out the bathroom, then left the house. I was on a cloud as I walked to my truck.

A baby wasn’t something I saw happening before Mycah came along, just because I hadn’t been in anything serious.

The possibility of it had me damn near skipping through the aisles at the store.

I wanted to call my siblings, but I knew I needed to wait.

Plus, I wasn’t sure what Mycah would want to do if she was.

I didn’t want to jump the gun, so I got what I needed and got out of there.

Depending on the results, and how Mycah felt, the dinner would turn into something different.

Mycah was in the process of getting dressed when I walked into my bedroom.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better now. Thanks.” She took the bag from my hand and pulled out the crackers and soda. When she pulled out the four tests I got, she looked up at me. “Should we do this now?”

“Yes. We have to before we leave or I’d be too anxious. We have time. You can do it, then finish getting ready while we wait.”

“Okay.” She opened the soda and took a few sips before she picked up the tests and went into the bathroom.

I tried to keep myself occupied while I waited, so I made the bed and straightened up the room, even though there was nothing wrong with it.

I dropped the shirt in my hand when Mycah stepped out from the bathroom.

“Everything good?” I asked as I approached her.

“Yes. It’s going to take a few minutes.”

I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her lips. I couldn’t help but picture how she could possibly look in a few months with my baby inside of her.

“How are you feeling about all of this?”

“I feel nervous but excited if I am. I’ve always wanted kids, and this baby will be a blessing.”

I tilted her head and tongue-kissed her fine ass. My dick got hard, but I had to remember we didn’t have that much time.

“Definitely a blessing, like you are to me. It’s safe to say I love you.”

Her breath caught in her throat. “Kairo.” She wrapped her arms around my neck. “I love you too.”

We embraced for a little bit, then separated so she could do what she had to do. I paced the room looking between her and the bathroom until it was time to check the tests.

As I looked at each test, I saw the pink lines or the word pregnant in the little window.

I picked up all four tests and carried them into the bedroom. Mycah was already dressed in a red sundress and sandals.

“What do they say?” she asked as she bit her bottom lip.

The biggest smile spread across my face as I showed her each test.

“We’re parents!”

Mycah took the tests from my hands as tears streamed down her face.

“We’re going to be parents,” she whispered as her hand went to her stomach.

I kneeled on the floor in front of her, then placed my hand over hers. I gazed into her eyes and just stared at her. It was at that moment I noticed just how much her skin glowed.

“Are you happy?”

“Very.” She smiled as the tears still fell.

“That’s all that matters. I’m over the fucking moon.”

And I really was. I was the oldest and the first one to have a child.

It was up to me to continue the bloodline because sometimes, my brother had me worried.

I knew he would be a great uncle, though.

There was no question how Karma would be, because she loved kids even though she didn’t have any of her own.

“I don’t want to tell anyone until a doctor confirms it and that our baby is okay.”

“That works for me.” I kissed her, then stood. “Let’s go have dinner with our people.”
