1. Chapter One #3
“Kari, I think you need to at least go get checked out. We’ve been drinking and partying nonstop, and it probably just caught up to you. It shouldn’t take long,” Evan said to me and I agreed.
I got dressed then we headed to the nearest emergency room. We signed in and waited for an hour before they finally called me back. When I got back there, the nurse asked me a series of questions before she had me go pee in a cup. Now we were waiting for the doctor to come in.
“I hope they hurry up. I’m hungry,” Evan said. “How are you feeling?”
“Better since she gave me that pill for nausea,” I told him and a few minutes later, the doctor walked into the room.
“Hi, Kari. I’m doctor Brodick,” the French doctor spoke with a thick accent. “So, you came in because you had stomach pain and nausea?” He looked at me then to his chart.
“Yes, sir.” I nodded.
“Well, we found the source of it all. It seems like you’re pregnant.” Hearing those words sent me into a full-blown anxiety attack. Evan sat up in his chair turning red as hell.
“What?!” I was in shock and scared as hell. “How did this happen?” I questioned.
“Well, it happened because you had sex. When was your last menstrual cycle?” Dr. Brodick asked.
“I just had one last week. Never missed any.” I couldn’t believe this; I’d never missed a period and had no symptoms until today. I started crying and Evan was over there shaking.
“Give me a moment. We need to do a vaginal ultrasound. That can give me the most accurate count of how far along you are.” He smiled, and he walked out the door.
“What the fuck, Kari!” Evan jumped up and started pacing back and forth.
“I knowww this is so crazy! Oooh my God! My parents are going to kill me. How am I supposed to go to school pregnant?” I looked at him.
“Kari we can’t have this baby. I have a life plan, and a baby isn’t in those plans. My parents have everything mapped out for me. Neither of us are ready for a child. I’m seventeen for God sakes! We have to terminate this pregnancy,” he said, stopping to look at me.
“I don’t know what to do.” I held my hand up to my head feeling like I was about to throw up.
A few minutes later, the doctor came walking back in, and a nurse followed behind him with a machine. She got the machine ready and the doctor proceeded with the ultrasound. He moved the probe around my vagina, and it hurt so damn bad, but about ten minutes later he was finished.
“Kari, it looks like you’re roughly sixteen weeks pregnant,” Dr. Brodick said.
“Sixteen weeks!” Evan and I both yelled out at the same time.
“Oh my God!” I cried.
“Can she terminate the pregnancy?” Evan asked him.
“At this stage, no it’s not possible. We only terminate late pregnancies under certain circumstances.
If there were severe health conditions for the mother or if the child a life-threatening anomaly.
There are other options for you to consider.
I will write you a prescription for nausea and prenatal and give you a pamphlet on your other options.
Good luck Kari.” He smiled and walked out of the room.
Once the nurse got everything together, Evan and I left the ER.
“Kari, we have to figure this out. I can’t have kids, I mean you can do what you want with your body. But I don’t want any kids.”
“Evan, you heard what he said! I can’t have an abortion. We’re fucked!” I told him. He was pissing me off because I was in just as much shit as he was.
“Come on let’s go,” I told him.
“I’m going to take you back to your hotel. I need time to think.” He turned to get in the Uber because it had just pulled up and I was lost for words because was he serious right now!
It was crazy how before today, I thought Evan was perfect in every way. His reaction was very telling though. Everything he said had to do with himself. There was no “we” or “us.” He was self-driven and that broke my heart more than anything.
A few days had passed, and my mom and dad flew out because I told them that I wasn’t feeling well. They didn’t tell me they were coming but thank God I was at my hotel when my dad called to let me know that they were on their way.
“I’m so glad you’re feeling better, baby girl,” My mom said, lying in bed with me. We were watching a movie because my dad decided to go handle some business while he was here. That man had business wherever he went.
“Mom, I got something to tell you…” I said to her, but she cut me off when she noticed my award that I’d gotten since I’d been here.
“Ohhh, Kari. You’re doing so good over here! I’m so proud of you. You’ve done everything that a parent could ask of their children.” She smiled and I smiled weakly back at her.
I was about to tell her everything that was going on with me, but hearing her gloat about my accomplishments made me feel so damn bad.
The last thing I wanted to do was disappoint her or my dad.
My dad didn’t whip us; however, something told me I would get belt to ass and a lifetime punishment for this.
Thankfully, I wasn’t showing yet. I was still in shock and scared to death about it all.
I just kept on asking myself, “What the fuck am I gonna do?”
