Chapter 42
He takes me on the tour of the house, the one that both of us designed, I guess.
I don’t think anyone could blame me. Mack just showed me my brand new master bathroom. It’s got a huge double vanity, a shower with two showerheads, and even one of those fancy little rooms with a door for the toilet.
“I take back everything bad I ever said about this contractor,” I say.
Mack laughs. “I hope it’s ok that we took over that weird extra bedroom to make room for the bathroom. We added some built-in bookcases and a desk to make it into an office nook, but I lost some sleep over not asking you about that.”
“It’s perfect.” I run my hand along the quartz counter and then flip open one of the integrated medicine cabinets. They run wall to wall and look like one giant mirror, but there’s so much storage, I’m salivating.
“But wait,” I blurt. “I want to live here.”
“I want to live wherever you are so I guess that works out.”
I shake my head. “I can’t believe this is real.”
“Me neither,” he says, looking at me.
“Are you marrying me because I’m a nurse?” I say suddenly, my eyes narrowing. “Because I’m not loaded.”
Of course I’m only joking, but I’m also scared about the debt he racked up making this place my dream house.
Not to mention the ring. It’s a round diamond on a thin gold band.
I guess you could say that it’s simple, but the thing must be at least four carats.
It weighs down my hand in the best way possible and I keep knocking into things on accident.
“Um.” For the first time, I swear I see Mack blush. “We don’t really have to worry about money.”
His words are intoxicating, but maybe not for the reason people might think. Of course every woman wants to be told she doesn’t have to worry about money anymore, but I’m more hung up on the fact that he used the word ‘we’.
I’ve never been in a ‘we’ that I believed in. At least, not until now.
“Wait a minute,” I say, shaking my head and trying to focus. “Why not?”
“A few years ago some of us went in on some lotto tickets,” he says. “Long story boring, we won. Now we don’t have to worry about money anymore.” He frowns as if in contemplation and adds, “Unless you want to do some crazy millionaire shit like fly to the moon or something.”
“Yeah, no thanks,” I say. “I can barely handle this planet.”
He shrugs. “Then I guess we’re set.”
